College tennis is pretty much about recruiting. Is Weaver an elite recruiter ? Does he have any foreign connections or pipelines ?

Do you not think that Mark was around Joffe to learn some of his recruiting secrets? These guys worked very closely together and were best of friends and had extreme success for four years. I guess Mark just hid in his office and picked his nose everyday.

I have a friend close to the tennis team that has told me that the whole team has told anyone that will listen that they want Mark to be the head coach. From all that I have heard that ain't gonna happen and Mark is getting out of dodge as soon as the hire is made.

I'm just asking an honest question. I have no idea what kind of recruiter he is. I have heard that Joffe was an outstanding recruiter. Just because Weaver worked closely with Joffe doesn't mean that Weaver is a great recruiter. How many of the current players is Weaver primarily responsible for bringing in ?
I have no personal attachment with Weaver. If he's the best person for the job, then hire him. If there are better coaches available then hire one of them. I'm not interested in a repeat of the Kleineke era.

Joffe was a very good recruiter, but he also had some poor recruits as well. The turnover rate was close to that of working at a fast food restaurant. And if anyone thinks the team will do as well as it has over the last few years they are dreaming regardless of who they hire.

The speculation about homosexuality came about because of his strange statement about going to Austin to have a "meaningful private life". That is pretty vague, and there is no reason for not having such a life in CS. If his girl friend lives in Austin and does not want to move to CS, then that makes sense. Why not just say that?

Or, maybe just get a different girl friend. No mention of money, but that seems like the most obvious likely determining factor.

My vote is for Steve Denton to coach both the men's and the women's tennis team.

Gay or straight - if his significant other lives in Austin and they are serious, that's a legit reason to make this move. The question is can we attract another great coach? Hopefully so. I love tennis and want our teams to stay at the high level of performance they have shown lately.

Joffe still gone, Weaver undecided, probably interviewing soon.

But Joffe's last official day is tomorrow. Can't officially offer it yet.

My vote is for Weaver, but if not, let's hope the new person is smart enough to keep Weaver around. Joffe won a lot of Aggies over when he kept him on after Kleinecke's departure and the rest is history.

Coming from an ex-collegiate athlete (tennis player); the importance of world wide connections cannot be overstated or underestimated. Joffe is very well liked, and has connections all over the world due to his professional playing days. That's what made him an outstanding coach and a big draw for some of the outstanding talent we have recruited. If we don't find someone similar to take off and expand what he's already started, we might be in for a world of hurt in a few years...

If those are the only qualifications then Weaver has all of those covered. You might as well change Joffe and fill in Weaver in your post if that is all that matters.

...guess we will see. Would prefer a big time hire, but that's just me. I don't consider Weaver an upgrade to Joffe, but that's just me. Hopefully, whatever decision is made is a good one!

Weaver for sure isn't an upgrade, but I can assure that no one is going to be an upgrade. If anyone thinks otherwise, they are sorely mistaken!

I suspect there are several coaches out there that can build on the program's current momentum.
We've got the facilities, current players, and money to maintain a top 5 or 10 program.

We shouldn't be satisfied with anything less.

What facilities are you talking about? Surely not our outdoor Tennis Center. There are 10 facilities in the SEC alone that are far better than ours. Not too mention we don't have an indoor facility.

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. Our facilities are good; would love an indoor facility and hopefully the university will see that in order to keep and maintain these types of players and coaches, we must upgrade our facilities. Pat Henry agrees (T&F)...

It's not an exaggeration at all. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mizzou, and Vanderbilt all have indoor and outdoor facilities that embarrass us. LSU has a brand new facility opening this year. Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas and Auburn all have outdoor facilities on par with ours, but oh yeah, they also have indoor facilities. That leaves us and Mississippi State at the bottom of the barrel in terms of facilities for their programs. We're also the only.... ONLY!!! school in the SEC that does not have an indoor facility. That's not acceptable.

Whoever the coach is will have a very good year next year unless they are a complete idiot and if all the players leave. The question will be over the course of the next five years.

Seems odd to me that the job still hasn't been posted. Wonder if the hire has already been made? I believe that by state law it has to be published though.

Indoor facility is a must. Its amazing how well we have done without one. Top notch players want to be able to train year round. The local community would really benefit as well.. They could sell tennis memberships and get a lot of money back on operational costs- perhaps operate profitability (not counting capital expense).

Any info. on the coaching search??
