Bigtime, I wonder what your definition of superstar is. Howard's drawing card was he brought success wherever he went and QUICK! Miami of Ohio probably didn't even have six tennis courts together before Howard showed up and within 2 years they are going to the NCAAs. Maryland had never been to the NCAAs before Howard and since his departure they haven't been back. Before his arrival, A&M one time got to the Sweet 16, 4 years here we go there twice. All this bloviating about someone who left us for the sips, but still what is your definition? My recollection is, "He did well where there was no expectation, at least here we have some stepping stones in place, let's see what he can do with that." I too remember the mentality that A&M was just a jumping off place between Maryland and California but again, isn't it strange what love will do. Personally I think Mark had a lot to do with the calming effect in all that transpired when he first got here. But I think you have to admit Howard with that funky South African accent and not having a clue when he first got here about anything Aggie made him sort of lovable. Add in winning 19 matches (13 in a row) the first year certainly didn't hurt either.
Petty given the chance to come here would almost be like Kliff Kingsbury. My bet is when we do Gig'em he would stick his index finger out. Success is a hard thing to argue against, but that keeps bringing me back to Mark.
