After 2 volleyball games, the band is obviously light years ahead on where they were at this time last year. I have to say though, that I'm not a big fan of the singing when you play "Hot Time". Otherwise, I've been impressed.

Thank you very much!

(We're not the biggest fans of the singing during Hot Time either, but the guys up top want us doing it so people will learn the words...we'll see if we're still doing it by basketball season.)

What do you think of the new uniforms? Better or worse than last year?

It's going to be hard to get people to learn the words from your singing. I've been pretty much at center court for both matches and haven't been able to understand a word of what yall have sung.

I like the new polos. I think they look sharp and definitely stand out more than the old plain maroons.

The new polos look good and the band sounds great.

It was good to see a bunch of students at the two volleyball games (and standing all the way up). Even if it was a bunch of fish it was encouraging to see them really get into it.

yea, we(Hullabaloo) are not too sold on singing "Hot Time" either. It would be much more effective if everyone got in on it, but, alas, everyone just kinda gives us a weird stare when we start singing.

Thank you for the compliments. After a someone thrown-together first year, we finally have some organization and some direction in the band, which goes a long way towards us sounding good and uniform.

I like the new polos, too, and I am glad that yall also like em.

dude, I for one think singing during "hot time" is awesome. If all the students would start singing it would be cool. Pardon the comparison but I think it's alot like "Rocky Top" although if the band plays it even a 12th as much as they play that, I'll kill them.

But I do think it sounds cool and if all the students joined in I think it could be really cool at basketball games during those long ass boring timeouts.

Singing Hot Time would be an awesome touch if it was actually audible. Right now it just sounds like a bunch of kids mumbling, but it could be very sweet. I don't like them playing the 12th Man Song though because we're only supposed to play that when we lose -- I hate to be superstitious but ya know...

Is the playing of 12th Man song only after losses an actual tradition or just something that just happened and for some reason the FTAB just can't get away from? If it is tradition, exactly how did it get started and when? It's actually a decent song if people would not associate it with an A&M loss.

The Director, Chris Hollar, went to the powers that be in the corps(don't know the name of the head honcho corps officer guy) and asked about the history of the song. He said that "Someone back in the 60s thought that it would be a good idea if they played that when we lost." He then asked if they cared if we played it, and he said no that he didn't mind and thought it was a good idea that we play it.

I think that is a fine song to be played during a game. It is very upbeat and not long. I hope everyone else can accept and like it too.

As soon as I heard that "12th Man" was in the band's repertoire that it might be a problem. Some people will complain, but it really is a good pep band song.

Glad to hear the band is doing well. Last year we were basically a bunch of high school band nerds who hadn't played their instruments in a couple years. Now the upperclassmen can play MUCH better than last year, and the freshman are still good players because they never stopped playing. I probably won't make any volleyball games, but I look forward to hearing y'all during b-ball season!

flaith -

The 12th Man was sung following games in which the clock was allowed to run out while the Aggies were behind on the scoreboard (remember, Aggies never lose, but occasionally are behind when someone allows the clock to expire) as early as the mid-50's. Unfortunately, during the early part of my student days (54-58) we had considerable practice at it, though the world was restored to its normal state in my Jr-Sr years.

I'm not sure who your band director talked to in the Corps, but I believe he was given some misinformation.

Well I'm not trying to ruffle any Old Army feathers and nor is the band other than our obvious existance pissing off the FTAB and others. I am just saying what I was told and that us playing '12th man' was given the OK from a prominent leader in the Corps of Cadets.

Despite the belief of some, Hullabaloo is filled with a bunch of redass Aggie sports fans present at most if not all Aggie sporting events yelling and humping it with the best of em.

I'll say it again. I think that it is a fine song to be played in our medium, and we would not have played it without approval.

I personally like the 12th Man song. No where in the actual song does it talk about the "time running out" or anything like that. It talks about what the 12th man does. I think it's a great song and should be a little more present in our lives as Aggies and needs to stop having the negative connotation of us losing. Yes, it does talk about us being down, but then it says that we can fight back.

"Texas Aggies down in Aggieland,
We've got Aggie Spirit to a man.
Stand United!
That's the Aggie them.
We're the Twelfth Man on the team.

When we're down the going's rough and tough
We just grin and yell,
We've got the stuff!
To fight together for the Aggie dream,
We're the Twelfth Man on that
Fightin Aggie Team!"

Hullabaloo would not be playing it without the Aggie Band's permission. Where else would they get the music?

The first time I heard the "12th Man" on my Aggie Band CD, I thought that it would be a great "fight song" for Hullabaloo. Not that it could ever take the place of the war hymn, but it is fast and peppy and great for a basketball atmosphere. I think that we should reclaim that song and make it popular again.

I've never been a big fan of the 12th Man Song just because I've associated it with losing. I do think that it can be a good song for Hullabaloo, though, if we can lose that perception.

From my memory, the FTAB only played the 12th Man after a football lose. I do not remember playing it at basketball games one way or another. This would have been 86-90.

I agree with others, I always like the song and wish it was played more. Not just associated with losses.

By "Hot Time" do y'all mean the ditty

One late night while the teasips were in bed
The ghost of Sul Ross put a latern in the shed
That Ol' Ag knocked it over
he winked his eye and said
It's going to be a HOT TIME in Austin tonight!

Keep singing it, it is pretty pathetic that people don't know it.

Yep, something like that. I'm wondering if maybe they were teaching the incoming fish this at fish camp cuz a good protion of them seem to know it this year. I know when I was a fish (uh oh...I'm sounding perilously close to being an old ag), we didn't know it.

Working at the men's & women's basketball games last season, I got to hear Hullabaloo a whole lot.

When I went to the two volleyball games this weekend, I swear I was listening to a completely different band.

Don't get me wrong....by the end of the basketball season last year, the band was much improved from where they started. However, the band that played this weekend was light years better. I couldn't believe it. I also think that the more intimate surroundings of Jolly Rollie helped to make the band sound more massive.

Keep it up!

I've been singing Hot Time since my freshman year in '02 and before me my '03 brother and his friends sang it. I'm gonna continue to sing and if anyone wants to join in or learn the words its okay with me.

On another note, these fish that are showing up to the games recently just aren't loud enough. I hate that. The volleyball games/soccer just don't have the same decibel level as in the past.

And another note, I hate it when Hulabaloo plays non-Aggie oriented crap. I feel like i'm at a high school game or some trendy ass liberal university like the one up the road.

BTW I'm that loud, obnoxious aggie who screams "bring it down like a freight train" when we pass back locomotive. If you've heard that before it prolly was me.

well, that "trendy crap" is entertaining and is why we were created in the first place.

Way back when I was a fish, no one was much singing Hot Time and I had never seen it written anywhere, but by the time I got outta school it seemed pretty wide spread. So I'm guessing it was created in the late 70's early 80's.

Late one night, while the t-sips were in bed,

Old Sul Ross, put a lantern in the shed,

An Aggie kicked it over; he winked his eye and said

It’ll be a hot time in Austin tonight.

These are the words the band is using FYI.

well good for this haun guy....now let him tell us how "into" the basketball and volleyball games the crowd gets when the band strikes up When Johnny Comes Marching Home or Cyrus the Great....I was there two years ago when we were lucky if the FTAB even showed up to the games.

Hullabaloo is also there for the genereal team support, too. Lets not forget this. There is hardly a more rowdy group than us...well, except for maybe the Reed Rowdies. But a good portion of us hulla peeps were part of the Reed Rowdies before joining the band. So we come from a good stock. Like flaith said (I think it was him) we're just as redass if not more than any other Aggie. We want what's best for Aggie sports.

Haun 06 must have gone to a pretty awesome high school if he thinks that Aggie volleyball and basketball feel like high school. But for me, nothing measures up to the whole Aggie experience and now Hullabaloo is part of that experience and I'm proud to be a part of that.

It's not that I want the aggie band to come to the games, personally I could care less what they do until football. I just want a band to live up to its name. With a name like
"Hullabaloo" I expect ol' army tunes and what not, not to hear the other music. Don't get me wrong I love the fact that we have a band dedicated enough and redass enough to come to our other sports events. I just think that if we wanted to here pop tunes we could turn up the speakers.

Haun,

I'm not belittling your opinion in any way, but here's just a bit of background on why Hullabaloo was created. The Aggie band simply did not have the ability to attend every game. It was a volunteer band, and with many other corps activities, they could not have a full band at every game. In addition to this, MANY Aggies felt that marches and many "aggie" songs just did not work at basketball, volleyball, etc, and I tend to agree. Having the Prairie View A&M band at volleyball was always greatness. The Aggie Band sounds fantastic when you have a 300-400 member band at Kyle Field, but when you have only 50 or so in Reed Arena, it doesn't work. The tempos are slow, methodical, and really don't get anyone pumped up.

So, the athletic department created Hullabaloo to create a unique atmosphere at volleyball and basketball, not try to re-create the football atmosphere. Our best non-football atmostpheres (soccer and baseball) starkly contrast the atmosphere at Kyle Field, and that is what makes them great. They are unique. Hullabaloo is a part of that for volleyball and basketball. The band made great strides, but also had some growing pains in the first year. From what I am hearing they will be MUCH improved this year.

Haun, were you ever at a basketball game where part of the Aggie band was in attendence? They added nothing to the atmosphere, and usually took away from it. Hullabaloo is one of the best ideas the athletic department has come up with.
