Black and Ringel will completely change aTm volleyball starting next year. You will see immediate improvement in the program, I can guarantee you this.

With better coaching all of the players will be improved.

I do believe Black and Rengel are the best - but--- where do they fit in? More outside hitters? We're losing a middle and DS. Have pretty entrenched current outsides for two more years after this. May need to replenish what we'll be missing while the young outsides are still around. Personally I see a defensive need - a good team always starts with the pass, so the setter isn't chasing the ball all over - and then the hitters can knock it down. Just wondering....

I'd really like to take your side of the argument. We have all seen our players have the talent to be competitive in the big 12; but, as it has been stated before, we continue to be in the bottom of the big 12 cellar.

Sure, I'm the idiot/t-sip for saying we may have lacked the coaching when the goals came out mid-June. Players like Jillian Phillips continue to prove you wrong.

Based upon the first half performance in the Big 12, it appears you may be on point - and you did so without subjectively criticizing individuals/team members/fellow ags/and somebody's loved ones. I concur JP is a bright spot, for sure. Her confidence is beaming and it shows. Though it may not be what you want to hear, this TEAM (different from TEAMS in the past)is together, they trust each other, support each other and work together. Now, granted, the results may not be what everybody wants to see; but understand, if the teammates aren't rowing together, the boat goes nowhere. These girls (and Coach) are working together; and they will have better results second half because of it.

GC - I just know the very basics of volleyball, but I love to watch it on this level. It's very entertaining.

What factors do you think are contributing to the current results this year in conference play? If the chemistry and talent are in place, what specific or general conditions exist to explain where we are right now? How was A&M able to go from being a staple at NCAA tourneys to near lower quadrant of the Big XII conference while having the same coaching staff?

I think there are a few important considerations in our team's performance this year and the general decline over the past few years.

I don't think we have necessarily fallen off as much as the rest of the big 12 has caught up to where we were five or ten years ago, while we have remained somewhat stagnant. If you think about our past success, we never really were a great team on the national scene...a few all americans and even one olympian, but no national championships or deep runs in the tournament (at least not that i am aware of). The big change has been a huge improvement in the lower teirs of teams in the big 12. Nebraska has always been a power, but Texas has just recently come on to the national scene as a strong contender. Teams like Kansas State and Baylor have moved from barely having a team to making a strong showing night in and night out. I think we have sort of relied on our past laurels while all the improvment has been building around us, and now we find ourselves stuck near the bottom of the Big 12 and everyone is sitting around scratching their heads...but it surely did not happen overnight.

On the positive side, however, I think there have been a lot of improvments to the team this year and one really important consideration is to remember our starting setter is only in her first year in our program. For those unfamiliar with volleyball, a setter is much like a football team's quaterback or a basketball team's point guard. They are called upon to essentially run the team's offense every single night. Building a connection between setters and hitters takes a lot of time, and I think we have already seen a great deal of improvment just over the course of the season.

I also take issue with the recruiting commitments that are swirling around and the idea we are bringing in two strong outside hitters. We did actually lose one outside when Lindsey Yon transferred to NM State, but we are also losing a libero and a middle this year to graduation. We lost two setters from last year's roster-Courtnee Rhodes and Meghan Kainz, and we have thus far replaced only one with Kristen Schevnikoven. I'd love to see us bring in a really top notch setter and a strong passer. It seems to be a widespread philosophy that you shouldn't recruit back row only players and fill those positions with walk-ons (even Nebraska's libero was a former walk-on) but our team really needs a strong passer in the back row to allow our attackers to succeed.

Sorry I seem to have a knack for rambling in my volleyball posts, but hopefully I have provided some insight to those who are interested.

PS...i'm not a future coach of this team, just a student at A&M with a passion for volleyball.

If you consider positions that were well laid out showing the problems our coaches have in administering the team pot banging, then yes, it is productive. Name calling is not productive. If you have reasonable counters to people with those positions, I know I'd be interested in seeing them since I am admittedly ignorant on these issues and would like to know more.

I asked GC for some additional information because he/she seems to have some good, inside contacts. I'm not happy with the direction of the VB program, but I'm not convinced changing coaches now would be the best course. I just don't know, so I come here for information.

I was hoping you might be able to offer something too since you think our coaches are being unfairly criticised. If that's what you think, I'd like to know why. That's all.

I see your point. My objection is to the many who just bash...and never have an objective point. Plus they tend to "pile on" to thoughts that have been expressed many times. It gets old and is not helpful. I just hope that childish attitude that you see so many times on the football forum doesn't invade this forum
