If she went missing I doubt it would be national news
Her body would be easier to spot from the helicopter.

Possible sighting near the Appalachian Trail and headed for California.

From https://nypost.com/2021/10/02/brian-laundrie-may-have-been-spotted-on-appalachian-trail/

Quote:

"There is no doubt in my mind I spoke to Brian Laundrie none whatsoever," Davis, 53, said.

...

The man believed to be Laundrie pulled his car up alongside Davis to ask for directions to California using only back roads and refused Davis' suggestion to take nearby Interstate 40.

Davis, a father of four currently hiking the Appalachian Trail, said the Laundrie-look-alike acted skittish and rambled about being in a fight with his girlfriend.

...

"He said 'man, I'm lost.' I said 'what are you trying to find?' and he said 'me and my girlfriend got in a fight but she called me, told me she loves me, and I have to get to California to see her.'

"I said 'well, I-40 is right there and you could take it west to California' and he said, 'I'm just going to take this road into California'.

"He was worried and not making sense."

If it was him and if he is indeed headed for California by backroads, he really has no idea what he is doing.

On a major highway, they have thousands of vehicles on the road. Unless the police have a license plate, it doesn't seem likely that he would be spotted.

Small towns on back roads have a lot more time to take a look at every vehicle driving through. I think that they are more likely to pull over a stranger for a minor infraction. Also, they are more likely to run the plates on every car they aren't familiar with, especially out of state plates.

Automated plate readers are likely to change this, but for the time being, I think a bad guy is more likely to avoid the police on a major highway than on backroads.

Unless there's a toll road or other camera stations.

But what car is he is in? If not in a car someone knows he he is in, license plate readers or small town police do not matter.
And I cannot imagine he would stop to ask for directions

lemme get this straight, a guy who is running from the cops and is by the appalachian trail, clear on the east side of the country, and stops a guy and asks how to get to freaking california by BACK ROADS and thinks some random schmuck is going to know? most people dont know how to get to the next closest city by backroads, let alone clear across the country.

And sure, he just happened to mention something about his girlfriend and was being skittish. No, this couldnt possibly be some weirdo who wants to inject himself in to the story. GMAFB.

and even better, he got with dog the bounty hunter to verify his claim and now this guy is a voice recognition expert? And I love how they say he is an engineer to try to lend him some credibility. What a complete crock. they are getting clicks though.

App trail area is an ideal place to hide. No way he is trying to get to California from there.

This sighting could easily turn out to be wrong.

I think that in a small town, a stranger is far more likely to be stopped for an infraction that they wouldn't even pay attention to in a big city.

I got stopped a couple miles outside of one small town in my '64 International C-900 pickup once in the late 1970s for speeding and given a warning ticket. I was kind of proud of that ticket -- it showed that my pickup was capable of exceeding the speed limit on the open highway -- 56 in a 55.

I think using an experience you had in the 70s and thinking the same thing would happen 40+ years later would mean you are likely a little out of touch

Think of it this way: 1980 was as far from 1940 as 2021 is from 1980 now

It may be a lot different in the big cities, but not so much in many rural areas.

If that's real, he probably wanted to be seen.

Have some rando head to the FBI and say, "I saw him! He spoke about heading to California on back roads!" With a plan to spread the search thin. Meanwhile he can go see his family again.

There is literally no way to cross the Mississippi river on back roads.

There are people outside his parents house day and night to harass them. He's not going to see family again.

1) Define "back roads". I can think of a half dozen crossings of the Mississippi River that are in small towns or not on major highways off the top of my head.

2) If you go up through Wisconsin and head into northern Minnesota past Lake Itasca you can drive around the Mississippi River entirely on back roads.

I was surprised to see that there are over 100 places to cross the Mississippi. I assumed that it was a lot less than since there are so few crossings south of Illinois, but that river is all over the place once you get north of St. Cloud.

Someone put a drone up to film Brian's parents gardening in their backyard.

Also, apparently it is illegal to use a drone to record private property in Florida.

I met her accidentally in St. Paul, Minnesota,
And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl,
Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin' in Davenport,
And I followed you, Big River, when you called.

Timeline change, mostly has to do with the Mustang. Neighbors said they saw the Mustang on the 15th, but the parents said they didnt go get it until the 17th.

Family now says Brian went missing Monday the 13th, not Tuesday the 14th.

They can't keep track of their own lies.
