I was on to the multiply by 1 on my third guess, but they were multiplying the other number by 1. Booo!

24/6+1=5
41+31=72
4*1+8=12
4+1*8=12

I'll break the trend of 4 here... 3.

My opening really helped but, I agree, the multiplication or division utilizing 1 is really annoying. It basically takes a 3 and makes it a 4 in most cases. I got a really good start with 9 * 8 / 6 = 1 2
