Since it hasn't run since early March, turn that bad boy on today and crank it to 80.

In a few minutes, your smoke detectors will go off due to the funk being burned off. They'll stop in a few minutes.

Better today than at 3 AM Thursday when it kicks on for the first time this season.

I've been in my house 2 years and don't know if it has a heater.

Full disclosure I'm a father of two. Keep your ***king hands off of the thermostat.

By all means - if you want your heater to kick on for the first time this season at 2 AM, go right ahead.

If your heater sets off the smoke detectors, you got some problems. Even the first time in years. It should smell a little funky, but should not smoke.

My heater has never started for the first time of the season at 3am because I've never said "I'm going to switch the thermostat to heat even though it's not cold yet, and at some point this year the temp will get low enough for thing to finally kick on." When I switch to heat, it is because the temperature has gotten to a point where I want the heat to come on at that moment (at which point the smoke alarm will go off two minutes later, if at all).

My heater will kick on automatically if it gets to 58 inside my house. That's not gonna happen until Thursday at the earliest.

Turned my heater on last week. When the temp gets below 60, the heater is turned on.

Exactly. The point is that I will notice before it kicks on automatically.

I used to know someone in Houston who made it a point of honor to not turn on the heater before Christmas while he was in college.

Now that I'm in Missouri, I try very hard not to run my A/C until June 1. I usually make it to late May and then break down during the first heat wave. I'm okay with being hot in the afternoons, but I'll turn the air on if it's too hot to sleep at night.

No way I'm making it to Christmas without heat. 47F today is the warm point for the foreseeable future. Might snow Saturday during the Arkansas/Mizzou game.

Keep that white stuff in Missouri, don't need any here in Arkansas.

Live in the Phoenix area so heaters don't get much use.

Should have listened to this.

Now it's cold and I'm realizing the heater in my new house doesn't work.

I too am confused by this and seem to miss a number of references.

But I got a blanket and had some whiskey. Doing much better now.

I keep my heater set between 60 and 65, depending on the time of day. Y'all would flip out if I told you how I normally heat my house when it's really cold inside.

My house is at 70 right now with it being 46 outside. UGH. The thought of turning on the a/c is silly. Guess I'll open a window.
