Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, whose ministry was toppled by prostitution scandals, dies at 90
Quote:

The Louisiana native was best known for being a captivating Pentecostal preacher with a massive following before being caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans in 1988, one of a string of successful TV preachers brought down in the 1980s and '90s by sex scandals. He continued preaching for decades, but with a reduced audience.

Swaggart encapsulated his downfall in a tearful 1988 sermon, in which he wept and apologized but made no reference to his connection to a prostitute.

"I have sinned against you," Swaggart told parishioners nationwide. "I beg you to forgive me."

The Madsen ear-slicing torture scene in Reservoir Dogs is the most horrific -- because of the Madsen character's enjoyment (for want of a better word) of his inhumanity -- passage, surely, ever put on the public screen. One can only take it as representative of the worst of the myriad brutalities that occur daily, somewhere, in actual life. I'm not sure I got through it the first time, and would never willingly watch it again. As for the person who "acted" it, he had to have come out of the experience bent even more than he was before; if not, he came into it with a very heavy problem. There are notable exceptions, but the great weight of actors are untermenschen.

Also ejected from the game on July 9 was former Chicago Cubs manager, Lee Elia, who most definitely did not view Cubs fans as the greatest fans on earth.

Artist David Adickes (maybe only Houston-famous) died Sunday at 98. His best-known work is the giant statue of Sam Houston on I-45 in Huntsville.

What I always found funny about the video of the Marshall running the wrong way was that Billy Kilmer was the guy that caught the pass and fumbled. I grew up when Kilmer was a gimpy quarterback with the redskins so I find it funny that he had played as a receiver. Also, today this play would be reviewed for 10 minutes to determine what the final outcome should be. Marshall threw the ball backwards when he got to the end zone. The ball may have gone out of bounds. But him throwing the ball backwards was actually throwing the ball forwards. Don't know what the rules were like at that time but it should have been ruled an illegal lateral and a safety. It apparently was ruled a safety at the time but today there would be a long ref huddle to discuss because this was a most unusual play.

Catching up on this thread, and feel like this post deserves a belated "username checks out."

Well, once the ball crossed the plane, the play is dead, so it didn't matter which way he tossed it.

The play should not be ruled dead once he crossed the goal line. That was not his teams scoring end zone. It would be like a running back starting from his own 5 yd line retreating into the end zone to avoid a tackle or a qb dropping back to pass and retreating into the end zone.

Sad situation.

On the plus side, he was 114 and went out doing what he loved. Not lying in a hospital bed hooked up to a bunch of stuff.

"This guy" died in a motorized paragliding accident. I didn't know his name, but I'll never forget his jump.

Quote:

Felix Baumgartner, who once broke the world record for the highest skydive by jumping from the edge of space, has died in a motorised paragliding accident in Italy.

The 56-year-old fell to the ground near the swimming pool of a hotel while flying over the village of Porto Sant'Elpidio in the eastern Marche region.

Porto Sant'Elpidio's Mayor Massimiliano Ciarpella said reports suggested he may have suffered a sudden medical issue mid-air.
