It's been 30 years or so since I've been to a Luby's, but I always got the fish, and I remember it being rectangular...

If you get the regular plate, it's rectangular, but if you get the Luann, it's cut in half and is a square.

I know way too much about Luby's

Baked fish, salad and cole slaw with roll.
Plus coffee with pecan pie for dessert.

Served by the quaint English lady in Bryan who always had some conspiratorial information to share with me and the GF.

Oldies love that place. They have servers to get drinks and stuff. Food isn't spicy or too salty.

I always thought a good marketing deal / cost cutting and saving method for Luby's would be to offer an all you can eat option after 7:00 pm. The amount of food you get would be limited to a single serving at one time, plus you must get in line to get it. Also, no additional food would be prepared.

So all you can eat until they run out of their prepared food? You don't understand the concept of all you can eat

The one in Beaumont is still open. They're about to start widening I-10 there, though, and the construction may put the hurt on their business.
Serious nostalgia for the Luby's in Beaumont. All four of my grandparents *loved* that place. I can remember going once with my maternal grandparents, sitting down, and there were my paternal grandparents, eating their lunch two tables over.

Never forget driving in to open up one morning and watched the BPD pouring water bottles into the eyes of a cuffed and pepper sprayed perp. Witnessed lots of crazy things there. The homeless camped right next to the interstate in the grown up area out front and we cranked out the fried fish and liver and onions there. I worked there for two years but aged about ten in that short time. Post Rita, it was crazy in B/PA. Loved Nederland though

You forgot Piccadilly

Satellite plate with a side of cubed Jello was the bomb as a kid.

Brings back so many memories of Sunday lunch after church with my grandmother at the Piccadilly at Lake Air Mall in Waco.

Used to frequent the McCreless Mall location in San Antonio with my grandfather. Always good food and enjoyed seeing the Texas Rangers that would be there dining on occasion. Those 45's really got my attention.

I went to the one near me in Houston a couple years ago, when they were rumored to be closing. It was my first time to one in years, maybe since CS.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised. The customer service there was better than any trendy hip nice/casual restaurant I've been to in the last 10 years.

When all these Cafeterias of the past have closed down, I'm sure the sales volume for jello gelatin was cut in half or more.

Since we are on Luby's, there 2 close by, only one serves cheese enchiladas anymore and they aren't very good and only about once a month. They aren't even brought out of the kitchen in the big trays to the serving line. They are in single serving aluminum pans. Nothing like they use to be. Years back you could count them once a week usually on Thursday I believe.

Tuesday Thursday and Saturday were enchilada and pinto beans days.

Sometime, late in another century, I was going through chow line at the Luby's close to the Broadway Bank in SA.
Commented to the cashier that I'd been coming to Luby's for forty years and this was the first time I got iced tea in a paper cup. She replied, there's a first time for everything. I just couldn't help myself and told her there's a last time for everything too. Sure enough, it was.

How did they do it?

They were holding on to a real gem there. Nothing like it anywhere. Steak was flat, didn't retain grease, held up well under a heat lamp (no sog) and had that crunch factor.

Then some management consultant with an MA in culinary arts probably came in and tried to change it. Maybe got an award for it at the year end banquet from people who know nothing about CFS.

Another thing that doomed Luby's is they got rid of the tea cart lady.

Went in there a couple years ago and abuela was gone and they had some pimple faced kid trying to give me table service at Luby's.

Half the reason you go to Luby's is you want to eat, be left alone and get in and out. No drama.

But they somehow ruined that.

Will leave a buck for the tea cart lady. but I'm not tipping for table service at a cafeteria. They done lost the minds.

Lol…I lived with my grandparents throughout HS. At a minimum, we ate at Luby's every Sunday and had to be there by 10:55 to be one of the first ones in line when they opened the doors. My grandpa *****ed for years after they started the table service because he always felt obligated to tip when he didn't want to. Don't get me wrong, we still went every Sunday, and he tipped every time. But he sure did voice his opinion every time.

Yep, same.

Remember as a kid standing in line to even get in the door of Luby's.

the you had a line inside double wrapped like immigration at the airport.

You'd go thorough the line and ther'd be a hive of activity behind the steam table and back in the kitchen they cookin' it up. Cashier lady have your ticket printed up before you even got to her and would get peeved if you grabbed a desert or drink off the line after shed already printed a ticket.

Go in there now and they might be one or two people even awake or sober wondering if its time to go on break.

An acquaintance of my used to take his Dad in his late 80s weekly. Once he couldn't find the tea lady to get styrofoam to go for the old guys leftovers. When he got back to the table his food was already in a to go box. He asked where did that come from, the old man replied I wash them and brought it so you do have to leave that 2 dollars to pay for it like you do.

I'm trying to remember, because its been at least 25 years since I've eaten at one…

Wasn't the dining room of Luby's uncharacteristically nice for a restaurant in the 90s? I vaguely remember wood paneling and well-constructed marbletop tables.

Then again, maybe it was kitschy and cheap and I didn't know the difference back then.

I do remember the tea lady, the Andes mints at checkout, and the nasty Oreo cheesecake where the only thing good about it was Oreo crumble topping.

The watermelon gave me food poisoning once

Growing up id never eaten at Lubys. If we ate at a cafeteria it was usually a Furrs, which was an all you can eat joint. Sometime fish year some buds and I decided to go to Lubys in college station. Having never eaten there, but assuming it was similar in concept to Furrs, I loaded up the tray. I think I had 2 entrees, several sides and multiple desserts. Made it to the register and had a heart attack when it rang up north of $40! I ended up having to use the "emergencies only" credit card my parents gave me to pay. That was an embarrassing phone call to have to explain that they were going to get a big charge when the bill came in because I didn't know how Lubys operated.

Who would want fried okra on a plate?

Fry me some mushrooms instead.
