I'm not sure I want to live past 80.

I've been thinking about this for years and after witnessing how much my grandparents' deteriorated, it doesn't seem great. Also, you end up being confined mostly…to your nursing home room, or your house if you're lucky.

I think once I got to that point I might opt for some sort of medically-assisted suicide. But it would be classy.

The more songs you write, the longer it will take you to decompose.

I am okay with 85 or so. As long as one can make it to the dessert and coffee cart is a good rule of thumb.

As long as I'm relatively self-sufficient.

Don't really care what the number is.

Been thinking about this a lot lately. My grandfather ('49) passed away a few weeks ago and he was my last grandparent to go. Lived to 97 which is incredible.

But the last year or so of his life seemed really unpleasant. He remarried after my grandmother passed and his second wife died within the last 2 years. That alone has to be deflating.

In his last year he actually asked my dad (his son) to just give him a gun. I think that was tough for my dad to hear.

I just want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandpa. Not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.

I wouldn't mind checking out when I'm 75. I'm 59 now. Got a great place to go when I'm done here.

Right now I would say around 80, but I have a feeling if you asked me again when I am 79 and I'll likely give you a different answer

Same. We call it "sharpening the curve" at my clinic. We want long healthy independent lives and then when our time comes, its over peacefully. We don't want years of deteriorating/painful health at the end

I have a friend of my dad who is 91 and still passes his flight physical and still flys his airplane. Got another friend that is 86 and hunts in Colorado for Elk and Mule Deer.
The key is getting daily exercise and eating healthy.
I wanna go as long as I can race my boat and do my ranch work.
Hope the Good Lord sees to it that I'm here one minute and gone the next…..in the outdoors fishin or huntin or running a fast boat. . and not in a damn nursing home or hospital room….and a burden to no one.

Boat racing is like a beautiful woman.......expensive, high maintenance, but well worth the fun!

Gunny has the idea I think. I know people my age (60's) that are severely limited in mobility. Others, like my Dad, at 91 still drives just fine, runs a tractor, feeds horses, and works harder outside than guys much younger. Hard to put a number on it.

I don't have a number. I just know if I'm permanently incapacitated, pooping myself, can't feed myself, can't make decisions for myself and my family keeps putting me in the hospital for aggressive treatment instead of hospice I will try as hard as possible to become a ghost when I die and mercilessly haunt them.

// Angry rant warning
Seen way too many families keep dementia-riddled, bedsore-laden, clearly suffering grannies and pop-pops alive just so they can say granny and pop-pop are still "alive." It's at the point where they are gurgling on their own saliva, can't clear their own throats, can't eat, can't move, and just moan instead of talk and you're not only putting them in the hospital nonstop for expensive antibiotics for their chronic UTIs and pneumonia, you're refusing to even make them a DNR. It is cruel. Hospice is wonderful. Use it.

Like many on this thread, I don't want to live past the point at which I can do very little and am a burden to my family. I am about to turn 72 and am now the highest branch on the family tree, lost a cousin last weekend and she had previously been the top branch.

Hope I have many more productive years, but that is probably wishful thinking. Got a new grandbaby due in June and would love to be around him for awhile.

72 is young!

My aunt is 92, her younger sister is 88, and my mom is 80, and they are all still active!

I think you younger guys will adjust your number as you get older. I'm 68 and live in a golf retirement community. I'm on the younger end in my group of friends that plays golf 4 days a week. None are over 80 but several are pushing it. When I get out early there are people walking, heading to the pool, playing pickleball or tennis. For me and my friends life begins at retirement. Keep yourself active and the best is yet to come.

Gunny, it can be a real workout at my age to get to the coffee and dessert cart.

I'd like to go out peacefully in my sleep in my 90s like my grandfather did. I'd hate to go out screaming, horrified, and panicking like the people who were riding in his car with him.

The older I get, the longer I want to live. In 62 now, so today I want at least 90.
