Saw some grainy security video of a man and his kid walking along a street. They stopped briefly to pick up a coin, and seconds after they stopped a car swipes in front of their path. Had they not stopped who knows what could have happened.
So yes, I pick up the damn filthy coin.

Picked up a tin a real long time ago when the old campus PD was near the tv station. I think married student housing was where the Alumni center is now.
There was $100, rolled joints and seeds.

I used to pick up pennies. Now I might only if it looks old enough to possibly be a collectible, or for my own amusement.
It's literally not worth my time in value to take 10-15 seconds to stop and pick it up.
Say you make $60/hr on average. $1 a minute. That's 25cents of your time to stop for 15 seconds to stoop, pick up, look at, and pocket a penny.
Bad value proposition. Needs to be at least a dime if you are quick and a quarter if you are slow unless your free time is only worth minimum wage type compensation.
It's literally not worth my time in value to take 10-15 seconds to stop and pick it up.

That's not true. You aren't not making the money you otherwise would.
Years ago a handful of friends and I started a contest to see who found the most money from Jan1-Dec 31. It's just for fun but interesting to see everyones crazy finds!

True, but I can value my overall time in terms of what I spend it on. If it's my time, I can chose to spend it earning money OR doing something I value more. I won't chose to do something not worth my time if gathering money is involved. That's like paying myself below minimum wage for that portion of time, when I could use it doing something else besides gathering a nearly valuelesss coin.
I chose to work a full week at say, $60/hr, that's how much value i place on my time as a relative gauge. I'm just considering the proportion of time vs income broken out into a tiny moment of time and Tony amount of potential income and rating that against how much I am willing to work for, in my example.

100% accurate.
As an adult, my mom instructed me not to pick up random money because she read (which probably means she saw on FB) that people are coating loose change and bills in fentanyl.
This is the same woman that wouldn't allow me and my brother to look at other passengers in Houston traffic because we were "in the city now and people are different".
We had moved from Midland when I was 10 years old. You'd think we were in another country. Like the damn Beverly Hillbillies.
Pick up every coin I see. Found half of $20 bill when I was mowing the RV park. Did some looking around and found the other half. I also found a billfold out by the highway when I was mowing our yard, guess I was 15 or so. It had credit cards, drivers license, gas cards, and as best I remember just under $100 in cash. Found where the guy lived and gave it to him. It had been missing for awhile so the cards and drivers license had been replaced already but he was glad to get the cash back.
