Why didn't anyone ever tell me how cool the downtown Houston tunnel system is?!

In downtown screwston and came across the tunnel system for the first time. Who here knew about this?

This has got to be one of the coolest things about this city. Over 6 miles of underground air conditioned tunnels that feel straight out of the 90s combined with all the food courts.

I think I even saw a tour group down there.

If you've never been in the tunnels, need to check it out

Because it's in Houston. So it's really not that cool.

Walking from terminal to terminal in LAX is like the downtown tunnels but a helluva lot bigger.

I've spent way too much of my life in those tunnels, but China Ocean and Mediterranean Grill House have really good food.

It always amazes me how many people don't know about the tunnel system downtown. Especially after Tropical Storm Allison made it an underground river.

I have worked a few times downtown over my career and definitely use the tunnels, especially during the summer.

I just recently started a new job and am back downtown for the first time since 2013.

I use them every day. I do see tours almost every Thursday, which always cracks me up. There are some really good lunch options all over downtown. I do wonder how well the business model works. These places have to make their money in about 2-3 hours five days a week (really 4, Fridays are a ghost town).

Yep ... the tunnel was a great way to get around. Parking garage to building. Building to lunch. Building to parking garage.

Never have to go outside.

I spent a day with a friend downtown in the mid 70's and we walked the tunnel. I thought it was cool at the time but have never been back. Living in Houston, I try to avoid downtown other than Astros and concerts.

The tunnels are the type of thing where if you work downtown, they are very convenient and you use them every day, but if you have never worked downtown, there isn't really a reason for you to have ever visited them. I had a job interview downtown a few weeks ago, so I took the opportunity afterwards to explore the tunnels a little. They are a pretty cool feature, to be honest.

Even if downtown, you still have to really look for one of the buildings and stairs, or such, that go there. Some stairs to a basement just put you in the basement of a building. Some buildings have big open atriums with escalators to the basement, but again, it's not obvious that basement goes anywhere but that building's basement. But many entrances to the basements that lead to the tunnel system are not marked as tunnel access at all and just look like some random unmarked door. The 712 Main building and the Esperson building are like that.

Nobody who works Downtown and uses them regularly would want them all connected.

I miss all the places that used to be there. Pandemic hit the businesses in the tunnels hard.

I just went down in the tunnels at 11:15 today and there was a tour starting in the 1000 Main building tunnel. Too funny, I don't think I had seen one before.

Had no idea there were tunnels in downtown! I lived in/near Med Center for nearly 3 years but never went to downtown much.

I never worked downtown or spent really much of anytime downtown, outside of a few concerts and sporting events.

I found about them cause I met my dad for lunch one day down there (he worked in of the buildings connected to one of the tunnels).. that was probably 15 years ago.

When I saw the thread title, I literally thought the person was saying 'why didn't anyone ever tell me how cool (not hot) the tunnels were'.. like to get out the heat and be in a/c lol.

There is good wayfinding signage now. I hadn't been in the tunnel system since the 90'd and recently navigated them without worry.
