Great, great, comedy.

Actually felt like a movie instead of a series of funny skits. RDJ was fantastic, Tom Cruise funny, Ben Stiller OK, and Jack Black pretty tolerable. Mathew MyGodhesghey was pretty terrific too.

i thought tom cruise was good (surprisingly) and robert downey jr was good, but overall, i didn't like the movie at all. 3.5 / 10.

It was crap. Pineapple Express was much better.

I like dumb comedy as much as the next guy, but this movie, for the most part, was just plain dumb.

Just saw the movie tonight on a rare date night with my wife.

TERRIBLE. AWFUL. Can't think of other words to describe it. We walked out towards the end. Couldn't bear any more of it. We felt almost dirty after having watched it; as if we had come out of a porn feature with our parents standing outside the exits.

The Simple Jack issue was not just a bunch of activists whining- it was indeed incredibly poor taste.

Downey made a fool of himself as a white guy playing a black guy. Stereotypes abound throughout the movie. The same jokes were run into the ground time and time again.

Speaking of jokes/humor, the quality of the humor was very low. Most of it was of the fart echelon (literally and figuratively).

The gore was way overboard and unecessary; not entertaining.

I can't believe they assembled such an A-list roster of actors and arrived at this result.

Again, I am still angry at having wasted my $ on this one.

If you are a complete moron, don't go see a satire/spoof. You won't get it.

I enjoyed it but didn't think it was great.

Downey Jr was freaking amazing again. Talk about resurrecting a career.

I also really enjoyed Jack Black and I usually can't stand him.

Saw this one a couple of nights ago, and thought it was pretty funny. Very crude and cheap humor, but that is what I like. They made fun of hollywood, which is a win/win situation. I NEVER saw the Tom Cruise role coming. That was hilarious.

Only thing I didn't like was McConagay. Does he ever play a role that isn't just him being him?

Short answer to that question Stump is no. He doesn't have any real talent and should have retired after Dazed and Confused.

I can't believe that I'm about to say a movie like TROPIC THUNDER went over your head, but you clearly missed the point. What's in poor taste is
'I am Sam', 'Forrest Gump', 'Radio', and any other movie that is simply a vehicle for an actor to try to get some cheap accolades. 'Simple Jack' is making much more fun of those actors than it is making fun of the mentally disabled.

I feel dumber for having to spell that out.

I enjoyed the movie. For me, just when things were starting to feel a little stale, they got the pace rolling again.

I've felt for a while that Jack Black's fat-guy-in-his-underwear-acting-crazy schtick was real tired, but somehow it fit just right in this movie and had me surprised at myself for laughing so hard at him.

The satire sometimes felt a bit heavy-handed, but then again, judging from some of these posts, maybe it was just right.

WOW. JUST WOW.

I let this thread run it's course for several days and I see post after post bashing me for voicing distaste over what is a TERRIBLE movie.

TERRIBLE, plain and simple.

You folks need to take the Downey posters down from the walls of your bathroom and see the movie for what it is- a PISS poor satire.

"It's over your head" comments are just laughable and moronic. I'm embarrassed for you.

I LOVE a good satire. I love movies of this general genre. THIS movie; however, sucked.

And I have said this about many movies in the past, but great actors do not make a great movie. You judge a movie on its merits, not on which actor(s) you are worshipping at a particular moment in time.

The humor was not original. The black Downey was funny for about 3 minutes. Then it was obnoxious and overdone for the remaining 90+ minutes. Funny idea... but for about 90 seconds, not 90 minutes.

Oh, but please educate me on how I missed "the point...."

You listed several things wrong with the film that were things the movie was TRYING to do. If you didn't miss the point it makes no sense at all to list those as negatives.

What about it was poor taste? Stiller played an absolute moron, who in attempt to gain acting credibility, played a terrible and exploitative role. The film was a flop and deemed to be in poor taste, and the actor is reamed for the role. You are supposed to think "Simple Jack" is in poor taste. But you are laughing because it's ludicrous that such a movie would even be made, not at people with the unfortunate circumstances.

Two purposefully over-the-top characters then have a conversation about "never going full retard". At no point is this making fun of people with disabilities. It is making fun of the actors who exploit them and quite possibly have had such a conversation.

Downey fantastically played an actor who made a fool of himself playing a black guy. There is an incredible difference, that you clearly missed. He is supposed to be annoying. He is supposed to be obnoxious. He is supposed to be overdone. He is supposed to continue the ridiculous "method acting" that everyone is telling him to stop. At no point are any of these people supposed to be anything less than annoying, ridiculous, terrible people with poor taste. It is a spoof of Hollywood. It is not a spoof of black people and people with disabilities.

Oh... so... so... you mean... the movie was TRYING to do those things. Wow. Who would have figured that? I thought they were trying to make the next Saving Private Ryan.

I feel dumber for responding to, much less having read that post.

[sigh] Here's MY POINT, since a large number of you missed it...

It's just not that funny to do a 90 minute, way over the top spoof on Hollywood producers, actors, Hollywood disability movies, and generally "annoying, ridiculous, terrible people with poor taste."

I think with a different script, they could have pulled it off. But they didn't. Instead, it all relates back to the collectivist actor worshipping that people fall prey to and Hollywood knows it. They are the only ones laughing their a$$es off- for putting together an amateurish script, hiring big $ actors, and knowing the sheep will enter en masse. (and I'm sad to be one of them)

MY point is falling on deaf ears, but more importantly, evaluating a movie is not an objective activity, so I'll let your opinions be.

I'll let you know when the collectors edition hits the shelves of Big Lots.

Don't get pissed at me because you aren't effectively communicating your point.

If those weren't complaints about what was wrong with the movie I had not clue one why you were listing them in such a context.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle here. It's not the greatest satire ever made like some people want to make it out to be.

The movie was pretty low level unsophisticated satire combined with a bunch of low brow fart humor, nothing more. I thought it was funny, but I can see where someone would think it was just stupid without "missing the point."

Some of you people need to stop acting like you're a part of some special club that just translated the Rosetta Stone. The movie is pretty simplistic, especially for satire.

Maybe you could call RDJ a "big $ actor" or maybe he was just the guy Stiller wanted for the role. JB and Stiller are friends as is Tom Cruise. Matty Mc. was taking over for Owen Wilson (as posted earlier) and doing him a favor.

I would put this as Stillers second best comedy behind Zoolander. I really enjoyed Tropic Thunder, but was definitely the most amused person in the theater. RDJ really made the movie for me. My favorite parts of the movie were the ones where RDJ was interacting with "Alpha Chino" and the scenes RDJ shared with Stillers character.

I'm not used to seeing acting that good in a comedy movie, for serial. Usually its just comedians delivering jokes while in some hokey character. RDJ was brilliant in this movie, cant wait to see what he comes out with next.

That said, i can understand how some people wont like this movie. But all comedy comes at the expense of somebody. Tropic Thunder's making fun of hollywood may look like its crossing a lot of lines, but imo its really hollywood that is the brunt of these jokes, not blacks or simple jacks.
