This thread taught me a lot. I have added to my long list of people Ill never listen to again.
This movie was funny.

Watched this one because it's been so long and is on HBO Max now and man, I think it's one of those comedies that will continue to age extremely well.

RDJ and Stiller are amazing, and it's so fun to see Tom Cruise and McConaughey in their respective roles, especially thinking about how they've changed as actors in the last 12 years. This is one of my favorite Danny Mcbride characters, he's in it just enough to make you miss him and it feels very natural. I think Jack Black is the only real weak link in the movie and even he has some great moments. On top of the great commentary on acting and Hollywood, there's just a ton of odd little details that stick out on rewatch (like a copy of The Queen on DVD being in Stiller's gift basket) that really make it land for some reason.

I'm sure this will turn into a quote fest after bumping this thread and I'm good with it, but I really did forget how much I loved this movie.

Also, don't go read the first page of this thread.

I did read the first page and it reminded me this board has not changed one bit. There has never been some idealized "glory days" for the level of conversation on the board.

Bill Hader doesn't have a big role, but every scene he's in just kills me in this.

It was crap. Pineapple Express was much better.

I like dumb comedy as much as the next guy, but this movie, for the most part, was just plain dumb.
Let it be known that my opinion on this movie has done a total 180. This movie has aged like fine wine.

It was certainly the glory days of modern, R-rated comedies, though...

2007 - Knocked Up
2007 - Superbad
2008 - Forgetting Sarah Marshall
2008 - Pineapple Express
2008 - Step Brothers
2008 - Tropic Thunder
2009 - Funny People
2009 - The Hangover
2009 - I Love You, Man

2008, in particular, was insane. It's so weird to me that these types of comedies have essentially dried up, too. I can't remember the last time I laughed as hard in a movie theater as I did at any of the above.

But how has RDJ never gotten in trouble for the black face role? Hell, he was nominated for an academy award!

Apatow was literally on top of the world at the time. Insane.

The movie itself addresses the issue very well. Since the part is really about how wrong blackface is I can understand why the number who have complained has been relatively small.

There is an episode of American Dad where Stan help Steve with his video report and turns it into a Hollywood production. Roger shows up as the Gaffer and is wearing a bunch of old crew shirts. Totally nails the ******* union gaffer.

Just saw the movie tonight on a rare date night with my wife.

TERRIBLE. AWFUL. Can't think of other words to describe it. We walked out towards the end. Couldn't bear any more of it. We felt almost dirty after having watched it; as if we had come out of a porn feature with our parents standing outside the exits.

The Simple Jack issue was not just a bunch of activists whining- it was indeed incredibly poor taste.

Downey made a fool of himself as a white guy playing a black guy. Stereotypes abound throughout the movie. The same jokes were run into the ground time and time again.

Speaking of jokes/humor, the quality of the humor was very low. Most of it was of the fart echelon (literally and figuratively).

The gore was way overboard and unecessary; not entertaining.

I can't believe they assembled such an A-list roster of actors and arrived at this result.

Again, I am still angry at having wasted my $ on this one.
JMJLAW's takes on the basketball board are hilariously bad. I love that 12 years ago on a completely different board, his horrible takes were already a thing.

Interested to know why you think that is that R rated adult comedies are so much less common over the last decade and especially over the last 5 years. The recent ones I can think of are Cockblockers, booksmart, and Game Night and that is basically it. And those titles seem to be more safe (Game Night) or woke/"girls can be funny, too" comedies (Booksmart, cockblockers). Not that there seems to be anything wrong with that, they were all good movies, but I do miss the bromance comedies. Is it that writers/actors/directors are afraid to get involved with a project that might be considered "problematic" in our current society, or is it more of a cyclical thing where we are just waiting for a new group of comedians to start teaming up for R-rated comedies like we saw with the frat pack who dominated the comedy scene for about a decade?

I think it's primarily that the types of things that would be in a comedy to make it R, are the types of things that people with no lives make a big deal out of on Twitter. And companies don't want to deal with that
Then that whole generation of actors/writers are all 40-50 now for the most part

Honestly, I have no idea. Partly, yeah, it might be what PatAg was saying above - that maybe the kind of humor in those movies would be shouted down in the age of the blue checkmark brigade - but I'm not so sure. Cut a few gay jokes out of those movies, and I don't see people having much of an issue. I think it might be closer to PatAg's other point, and that's that so many of of the same people were involved in a lot of those movies, and they've all simply gotten older.

Either way, hopefully more good, R-rated comedy "glory days" are ahead, in whatever form they take...

I have nothing to prove this in any way, but I also feel like studios are getting more risk adverse (and all this pandemic stuff may push them even more in that direction) and I feel like comedies are inherently more risky. With the exception of stuff like the Hangover, they don't always do great internationally like generic action movies tend to, and if a bunch of your jokes don't land you can be labeled unfunny and not make much domestically either, regardless of if you spent a lot on an all star cast.

A podcast I listen to has an upcoming interview with Judd Apatow where they ask him about this and I'm excited to hear from him on it.

So is there another wave of comedic stars in the making? The Pitch Perfect crew (Adam Devine, Rebel Wilson) is the only "group" I can think of, and they aren't exactly Will Farrell or Seth Rogen. Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani, and Melissa McCarthy are in stuff, right?

Has comedy left the big screen for tv? What's the deal?

Lights Camera Barstool

Fun movie podcast, although I would warn that they have a pretty strange style of humor that I know not everyone appreciates. They do a lot of good content though, including interviews, fictional basketball debates, throwback movie reviews, and other good stuff. I believe they are holding back the interview with Apatow until closer to the King of Staten Island's release.

That wasnt acting, I firmly believe that was Tom being Tom.

The whole movie is amazing though. Straddles then line on unacceptable and outrageous really well. You have people nearly offended one minute and then laughing out loud the next.
