Seriously, I can't believe we're having an argument about when REM played A&M 20+ years ago.

I'll assume they played there before. I know New World Ag personally, so if he says it's true, I believe him. Heck, I ran into him at a RUSH show in Houston circa 1996/1997.

OK - I dragged out an old 1990 Aggieland. Michael Stipe is on Page 99 with his awesome pseudo-mohawk and his gay white suit. The description on page 98 says the concert was on Oct. 29th, 1989. I can't find my ticket right now.

But, I will say that I remember that show vividly because it was one of my first dates with my wife. Ironically it was my GF from my fish year who gave me the Green Cassette Tape for Christmas 1988.

You guys are lucky I'm bored while waiting on a server reconfiguration and reboot.

EDIT: I also came across all this OPAS stuff and apparently there were some Theatrical performances on campus too. I had no idea.

It has already been proven that REM played in 1987. How do I know this? I saw them and I graduated before 1989.

*facepalm*

I'm pretty sure most people would classify Garth as "country" and not "rock."

I'm the biggest REM fan around. They played twice.

They played in 87 or so. I believe this was inbetween Paegent and Document albums.

They played in 1989 on Green tour.

noac, i thought (based off the thread title) it was rock band/artist, where clearly you read it as rockband or rock artist.

some would put garth in the artist category. soulja boy, luda and tone loc have all been mentioned and none are of the rock variety.

i humbly request you rescind your facepalm.

I emailed my old roommate to confirm the '87 REM show. Damn, I was a college music D.J. with a good slot, and played alot of REM at that time. It's starting to come back to me...fuzzy memories of the D.Bs. and that "quit" the military quote.

It's looking like I've been proven they were there...just trying to figure out if I was...not good.

I remember wanting to go see Stabbing Westward around '00 or '01 at Reed Arena. The only thing that kept me from seeing them that day was Tool playing at the Woodlands.

Hollywood BQ, I'm really confused now. The site that jphelmet said that proves when REM played in '87, says that REM did NOT play A&M Oct. 29th, 1989 (or at all that year). I tend to believe you, since that's the show I remembered...around the Fall of '89. So now I'm doubting again REM coming to A&M in '87.

Cheap Trick played College Station more than once.

They did open up for Night Ranger on the "7 Wishes" tour.

I saw Cheap Trick and also Bob Hope in the early 80's!

Bob sat for part of the show (I think he was in his 80's at the time) and the floors on the stage were so waxed he couldn't get his footing to stand up. A guy ran out to help him. He turned it into a big joke by doing a soft shuffle tap dance with the chair. Great moment, great show.

C&C Music Factory in 99 or 2000. Only like 10 years after their popularity had faded. Amazing set.

For those doubting REM played A&M in 1987:

quote:
19 November 1987 - Rollie White Coliseum, College Station, TX
support: The dB's
set included: Finest Worksong / We Walk / So. Central Rain
notes: Stipe sings the lyrics to Underneath The Bunker during We Walk (during a part of the song he doesn't normally sing), but the band never plays Underneath The Bunker

Since I was in attendance I'm fairly sure it happened. Even remember Stipe made a disparaging comment about U2 that got half the crowd riled up. Aggies really like to get riled up about anything.

Aust Ag, since everything has to be proven on the Internet these days to be true ...

Leave it to a hard core Aussie REM fan to help me out. No Set List, but this Web Page shows the 1989 REM Tour Dates (incl. College Station).

If you still don't believe me, I'll have to scan the page from my Aggieland

Not sure you get any bigger than Elton John...at least in that day. Johnny Rivers was pretty big in the days he was here.
Elvis was not that big at the time he played here, but was certainly on his way.
But, certainly the Cowsills and Gary Pucket and the Union gap deserve notice...lol

I was at that Digital Underground show and Tupac was not there. They held up a cardboard cutout of him when his lyrics were being played. I believe he was filming Juice at the time.

I still say Bob Hope and here is his connection to Rock!

quote:
I'LL TAKE SWEDEN 1965
U.S. film. Little-known 1960s teenage rock n roll movie with Bob Hope firing off one-liners every 30 seconds! A widower is unhappy that his teenage daughter (Tuesday Weld) is in love with a rock n rolling, motorcycle riding, gum chewing smart-alec punk (Frankie Avalon). He accepts a job in Sweden to separate them. But those sex-crazed Swedes make him have second thoughts! Terrific teen dance scenes and Beatles/Mersey Beat influenced rock n roll! Tons of ‘60s music including the songs, "Watusi Joe" and "Take It Off." Rock n roll by The Vulcanes. Bob Hope, Tuesday Weld, Frankie Avalon, Dina Merrill, Jeremy Slate, Maudie *****ett, Fay deWitt, Alice Frost. I'll Take Sweden!

ZZ did play at the Old Stephen F. Austin HS in Bryan several times, but it was before they became ZZ Top...think their name was the "Pop Tops", then the "Moving Sidewalks" or something like that. Same guys, differnt name... But they played a couple of times in the late 60's.

My Fraternity had Rob Base and Vanilla Ice at the hall in 97'. Literally had to barricade the doors because people were still trying to get in after it was sold out.

I remember Garth brooks playing a concert at G. Rollie either Fall of '90 or Spring of '91 and the show didn't even sellout by showtime.

Funny to think of where he was less than 3 years later...
