Not much, actually.
Splinter of the Mind's Eye and the Timothy Zahn trilogy, and a book that I think was titled something like The Courtship of Princess Leia. At that point it started to feel like all the books one could read about Star Trek, and I moved on.

You could argue the EU comics and novels plus the video games from like 91-98 is the best Star Wars has been post-OT

'91 brought Heir to the Empire, followed by Dark Force Rising in '92 and The Last Command in '93. I've read those books 20 times each and would be happy reading them again tomorrow.

'94 brought Kevin J Anderson's Jedi Academy trilogy - we actually saw Luke find and recruit new Jedi.

'94 brought the Courtship of Princess Leia and introduced Dathomir, the witches, and the wild rancors

I won't name all of the rest but novel highlights for me include: Tales o the Mos Eisley Cantina, Tales from Jabba's Palace, the Rogue Squadron series, Shadows of the Empire, AC Crispin's Han Solo trilogy, which inspired the Hutt fight in Mando/Grogu, Specter of the Past/Vision of the Future, and Tales of the Bounty Hunters - one of the best short story collections out there.

The comics included:
Dark Empire I and II - featuring the novel idea of a reborn, cloned Palpatine
Crimson Empire
Tales of the Jedi - giving us Ulic Qel-Droma, Naomi Sunridger, and Exar Kun
More Rogue Squadron

The games included:
X-Wing
Tie Fighter
Dark Forces 1 / 2 / Mysteries of the Sith
Rebel Assault - my first SW PC game
Shadows of the Empire

Nope, never read any of the Han Solo books.

Holy crap…. I recall the craze of the Dark Horse Dark Empire series that was considered a super hot series in the early 90s, but I'd forgotten the finer plot points. Namely that the emperor has survived as several clones.

Disney relegated everything to the "EU" but stole the emperor clone and dark side solo baby plot points. I know this is not new info but it's a good reminder how that company has cratered the franchise.

AC Crispin is a fantastic female sci-fi writer who put together a way better plot for young Han Solo than the Solo movie (shocker, I know)

Three books, they have him meet and work for the Hutts, have his first run-in with Boba Fett, have his falling out with Lando, etc.

In the first one, he is basically an indentured servant to a low-level crime lord. The guy has an elderly female wookie as one of his servants, and ends up killing her, which is Han's last straw to escape. He winds up flying cargo haulers to a planet that has a major league cult going on. He rescues the hottest girl there, probably bangs her, but she splits.

The second one is really good, with it being several years later; he's rescued Chewie off screen and both joined and dropped out of the Imp academy. He starts working for the Hutts and has a surprisingly fantastic relationship with them, bangs a couple of hot women, runs afoul of Fett, who gets taken out (temporarily) by Lando of all people, and totally screws Lando out of the Falcon.

In the third one, he reunites with hottie from the first one, ends up helping out with an early Rebellion scheme in which hottie promises him a huge cut of the loot they're stealing and that she'll leave with him; but does neither, steals the loot and has Lando and others out to kill him because he promised them all a share.

...but is Lando a pansexual who has an "interesting" relationship with his droid? Cuz that's important, you know

I think this is the golden age of Star Wars EU.

Isn't the majority of EU stuff written before 99 dealing with timelines after Jedi?

Yes. But it dealt with things that occurred during the clone wars or created plot points that undercut a lot of what was established in the EU.

Midiclorians, Force Ghosts, and Boba Fett being the large issues that come to mind. And then Outbound Flight the novel was written to try and stitch back together the Thrawn Trilogy with the Prequels.

I knew that Star Wars is returning to theaters early next year, but Empire is as well?

Went to the afternoon IMAX showing today. Theater about 1/3 full.

I enjoyed it more on a second viewing. Just knowing the third act was coming after they delivered the Imp made me anticipate it. And it felt maybe a bit more emotional when Grogu was taking care of Mando.

It did look awesome on the big screen!

Question regarding the OT…

I recently went through all 3 of them when we realized my youngest didn't remember them…and I gotta say while the "new additions" of ANH and ROTJ I find mostly annoying (especially ROTJ)….i didn't have that issue at all with TESB….dare I say the additions actually, made it better?

Don't know what the general consensus is amongst fans but if they're going to be showing the ACTUAL original films in theaters I kinda wish they'd keep TESB with the updates in it…

Am I the minority on this one or do most folks agree with this?

Empire changes are minimal and mostly improvements with 2 glaring exceptions.

1. Luke's alternate line reading in Dagobah swamp to R2 is used. Goes from, "You're lucky you don't taste very good," to "You're lucky to get out of there." Ugh.

2. Vader's "Bring my shuttle" to "Alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival."

What is wild to me is one would think the standard for deciding to change a classic would be so high. I mean, who would want to make a change unless any reasonable person would agree it was a big improvement. Yet Lucas's changes are batting maybe 50% at best. Remarkable.

Forgot about #1…yeah remember hearing the original line as a kid and getting a good laugh out of that.

Didn't even realize #2 was a thing.

And your last point is 100% spot on!

This is awful because it's clearly not JEJ. And then double down by showing him landing on the "Star Destroyer" except it's clearly the landing bay from the Death Star in ROTJ.

I really do like the improvements to the exteriors of Bespin, those color hues are so iconic; I don't even mind them re-dubbing Fett's lines with Temeura Morrison. I don't particularly like the re-dub of Palpatine talking to Vader, I found the original actor/voice super scary as a child.

The updates to Empire were improvements, other than the dialogue changes as noted. Cloud City was always a drab place surrounded by natural beauty. Who thought not putting in a few windows was a good idea?

I liked the update to the Vader/Palps conversation; replacing the original actor with a woman doing the voice with Ian McDiarmid ties the movie to the others.

In the original special edition in 1997, Luke yelled something as he fell off that platform. Terrible. Glad Lucas removed that in 2004.

Hated the redub for Vader at the end by someone not JEJ.

I generally liked the additions to Star Wars, especially in the Death Star attack. I generally hated the additions to Jedi.

Sorry, but the Mos Eisley additions in A New Hope - the additional creatures in the street and especially the Jabba/Han scene - are abominations that should die a fiery death and never be spoken of again.

This article has some highlights of Jon Favreau's director's commentary for Mando & Grogu that you can apparently do while watching the movie. Lots of interesting stuff, including Favreau getting permission from Lucas to use the original "Red Jammer" Y-Wing design that was not in Star Wars, but was used for early mockups of the Yavin base. it is the Y-Wing used when they firebomb the Hutt's stronghold at the end o fthe movie.

This x1000... only three words, but one of the best line deliveries of the trilogy!!! I still physically cringe at the new line.

everything seems so flat now. the use of light and depth is not what it used to be. it makes everything feel like it was rushed and not crafted

Fascinating half hour video of a SW comic book artist designing, drawing, and explaining his composite image of Anakin's journey. If SW would lean into this kind of content, it would really win a lot of creatives over.

Really cool 33 minute documentary with one of the creators of Star Wars Galaxies about the Jedi problem in the game. One of their early ideas, which sounds so bad-ass, was that they were going to make the Jedi super rare to become, and the stronger you became, the more the Empire would hunt you - first with NPC bounty hunters, then with an NPC Mara Jade, and if you kept using your powers, Vader would hunt you down and kill you, and the Jedi would be perma-dead.

Neither the public nor SOny Online liked it, so they went the way they did with the "secret path" via the holocrons. This video makes me incredibly nostalgic.

I started playing literally the day after the NGE so I never got to experience the hidden path of becoming a Jedi but I do remember hunting down Elder Jedi on my bounty hunter and how much of a PITA they were to kill

I played a wookie smuggler/merchant when the holocrons started appearing. I managed to squeeze a merchant tent super close to one of the "dungeons' where the holos would drop and filled it with buffs and medpacs. Every day it would be sold out by the time I went to work, and I would raise the prices higher. By the end of the first few days, I had more than $50 million credits as everyone went insane trying to become a Jedi.

Despite all of its flaws, it was a delightful game. I played the fan-controlled port of a few years ago with my kids, although now I can't get it to work. i need to try it out again.

Releases in the US on October 6:

Synopsis: Wedge Antilles hero, warrior, star pilot. The only rebel to face two Death Stars and live to tell the tale.

Wedge confronted death countless times, in battles large and small, where split-second decisions often meant the difference between survival and a fiery demise.
Now, he tells his story, and those of the brave pilots he served with and elite enemies he fought against. Aided by unsealed archives from the New Republic, and unreleased interviews of Imperial and Alliance veterans, Antilles gives the definitive account of what it was to fight the Galactic Civil War from the cockpit of a starfighter.
The ships, tactics, and weapons, but also the quiet times and camaraderie, the moments of fear and despair, the thrill of victory and the aching loss of friends. This is the untold story of the galaxy's star pilots.
