Ugh, why? Garbage like that is what allowed suicide squad to exist in the first place
I thought the extended cut was a good movie.

missed that in your quote.

Not to mention that a movie that came out months before SS isn't the reason SS existed. SS existed because the success of Marvel movies. The fact that it was an utter **** show has nothing to do with BMvSM but rather with the rushing to get to Marvel's level.

You're correct, but reaction to BvS is definitely why SS was recut.

The extended version was still terrible. Just a lesser degree of bad.

The extended cut made a bit more sense due to more expository info (which probably indicates it needed some work to start with), but still had really questionable character motivations, an overly complex set up, several nonsensical incidents, and the title characters' mothers' names as the conflict solving device.

Perfectly timed.

Also, the hype train for this crap is surely already dying. I can't even get excited about it, and I'm a batman fanboy.

The whole death and life of Superman could have made for a compelling Phase 2. I still can't understand how every person on the planet isn't relieved that he's dead right now. They never had time to make him a savior before they killed him.

Let's say Man of Steel was actually the movie we were all hoping it'd be. Same basic plot / set-up, kicking off this brand new world / cinematic universe, just slightly better and not directed by Snyder. Or, say it was even the exact same movie, except the studio didn't panic and skip straight to Batman v Superman. Here's how I would have loved to see it go down, staying within the very broad confines already executed/planned...

2013: Man of Steel

2015: The Batman
Instead of BvS, an Affleck "prequel" set 10 or so years prior that gives us a seasoned Batman, lets us see the death of Robin, the Joker captured and put in Arkham, etc. Point is, we at least get one solo movie with Affleck/Batman before Superman changes everything.

2016: Wonder Woman
Prequel as-is, same WWI setting, just comes out a year earlier. Only THIS is our introduction to the character. End with a modern-day setting/scene, though, hinting at her eventual (and much later) appearance in...

2017: Man of Steel 2 / Batman v Superman Hybrid
Same opening as BvS, with a modern day Wayne witnessing the end of Man on Steel from his perspective. Nearly everything else is different/better, though, as Wayne isn't as psychotically bent on taking down Superman. Rather, he's simply cautious, if not a bit distrusting, and monitors Superman as much as he can. His story is more in the background, though, with far more screen time devoted to Superman, a much cooler Luthor, with either the Justice League villain Steppenwolf, or whoever they're planning on using in MoS 2, arriving and "preparing Earth" for Darkseid. Wayne fully comes around in the end, helps Superman, and Wonder Woman shows up in much the same way as she did in the BvS final battle to defeat Steppenwolf. So... all three heroes come together in the end, but it's not against Doomsday, and Superman doesn't die. The core team is assembled, and Superman leaves earth on a recon mission of sorts to either learn more about Darkseid or try and head him off at the pass.

2018: The Flash
With Superman away, an origin story that ends with the Flash being recruited by Wayne / Wonder Woman.

2018: Aquaman
Wither Superman away, ends with Aquaman being recruited by Wayne / Wonder Woman.

2019: Justice League Part 1
Superman returns ahead of Darkseid's arrival. I don't know the details, but the team is finally/fully assembled now and faces off against Darkseid. Darkseid prevails, Superman dies, and his absence paves the way for...

2020: Green Lantern Corps
We meet either Green Lantern or the GLC in a semi-solo movie, set a year or two before, not on Earth, but he/they come to ultimately fill the Superman void on Earth for the Justice League by film's end.

2021: Justice League 2
Picking up basically right where Part 1 left off, the new team faces off against a seemingly unbeatable Darkseid, Superman is resurrected, and the JL ultimately prevails.

Granted, I know next to nothing about Darkseid or the GLC, and I'm sure there are better ways to weave this all together and not rush it like they did. That, and there's got to be a way to have the Joker show back up, introduce a couple other heroes as well, and maybe even squeeze in another movie or two in between. I just thought'd be fun to throw out an initial framework.

Honestly, I would have preferred if they just kept popping out batman movies every year or two, styled like the Arkham game series, but set earlier in Batman's timeline. Flesh out that Batman universe and perhaps give us spin off movies set in that universe every other year (a better suicide squad, nightwing, batman beyond, batgirl, a better cat woman, etc.)

Everyone loves Batman. His villains beat Marvel's. You can occasionally have other DC universe heroes show up if you want, but you don't need them.

Yeah, agreed, but all things considered, that was never a realistic option, especially immediately on the heels of The Dark Knight trilogy.

Let's not dismiss the success of the arrow universe.

They proved that decent writing can make a show successful even with a non powered, unpopular hero.

They also proved that they can take those same characters that you love, and turn them into unlikable jerks.

But for real, DC/WB needs to focus on making good movies first. Marvel did that with Iron Man, who was a B-List hero before 2008, and now he is one of the most recognizable heroes. No excuse for Superman or Batman to play second fiddle to Iron Man and Captain America.

I think the last two posts pretty much illustrated how it's all about the writing.

4 years ago, would anyone have predicted Guardians of the Galaxy outperforming Man of Steel at the box office?

Please have them make it where Cavill has to grow a mullet. That would be the bullet to the back of the head of the DCU.

Not kidding, Cavill is rumored to have longer hair in JL. So it's not out of the question.

What's weird to me is how many of the next DCEU movies are standalones / origins. In my mind, origins are the worst. You get 2 1/2 brief action sequences, a lot of pretty standard character development (from __ to hero), and a villain who's only there to be overcome. Yet, the DC slate is bursting at the seams with them.

MoS origin, BvS sequel/origin (Batman), Suicide Squad team-up, Wonder Woman origin, Justice League team-up, Flash origin, Aquaman origin, Cyborg origin, Green Lantern origin, Shzam origin.

So the current plan is to still be doing primarily origins/solo films in 2020, like a solo Cyborg film? 7 years after Man of Steel?

Perhaps it's just my anti-origin story bias, but I tend to see those movies as something you just kinda have to get out of the way so you can tell more interesting stories, or mix and match already-existing characters. But at least when Marvel does it, they sprinkle it in amongst mega-teamups. You have to do Ant-Man so his appearance in Civil War will make sense, and strengthen the movie.

I'm not sure where some of these characters (like the Suicide Squad, by and large) will come into play again, because there are so many solo stories between here and there. But I guess it's not like they're super well-received overall, so maybe you never see Katana again and no one notices.

Seriously, does anyone at DC know what the *****they are doing anymore?

NBC's Powerless show loses creator/showrunner/executive producer over "creative differences."

They can't even get a half-hour sitcom going without running the creative minds off. Two weeks before they start filming and they are down the showrunner/executive producer. Doubtful they will make it as a midseason replacement with this drama.

I forgot about that show. Don't think there's much overlap between leadership team overseeing films and that team overseeing TV.

Still I remember watching the trailer and being shocked at how uninterested I'd be in a show starring Alan Tudyk and Dani Pudi. Those two on one show should be a guaranteed watch.

While there may be little overlap between their film and TV division (that's an understatement given there are different Flashes for each), this was supposed to be their statement that they could have success on television WITHOUT relying on the CW shows.

It would be one thing if they had made the show and it didn't do well. That happens. At least they tried to break the mold. Instead, they seem to be screwing the project up before it began and on the heels of Suicide Squad...they did not need this press.

Suit looks brighter too, but that may be just the lighting. This gives me some hope that perhaps with Johns on board, we will get a Superman the Man of Steel trailers hinted at (which remain some of the best trailers ever made). If they can deliver on that Superman and the Johns/Affleck team can make a coherent story then they might turn this around.

DC doesn't have to be Marvel to be successful, they can continue to be a little darker. If they can figure out a way to make Superman be the change that brings the franchise out of that, then all the better.

Based on that last picture that people got excited about everyone wants to see a brighter, lighter suit and Superman wearing it. But instead DC tweets out a black suit hint. They still don't get it.

For those of us who haven't read the books, what's different about Superman when he wears the black? Has he sworn an oath to take no wife, hold no lands, father no children, wear no crowns and win no glory, live and die at his post? Is he the sword in the darkness, the watcher on the walls, the shield that guards the realms of men?

Nothing that I remember it was just the suit he wore when he came back to life after he was "killed"

As far as box office, I still think it has a pretty good opening. Maybe $100-$110M opening weekend, probably settles in around $220-$250M domestic, depending on word of mouth. International is hard to guage, seeing as none of these characters are very well known outside of Joker. Have to rely on Will Smith's star power.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if WW will be the one to turn it around for DC, at least critically. Financially, I'm sure WB isn't sweating it too much for this one's international numbers.
Doing pretty damn good domestically. Up to $238M, with $300M+ in play.

Already passed $500M worldwide but I don't think it quite gets to $800M. Maybe high 700's like Deadpool did.
