I actually watched MM also because Soderberg. Well I should say, I watched about half of it, then I just couldn't take the horrible acting of the main love interest. Channing Tatum was having to work so hard to make her seem even remotely interesting. Just awful. I don't want to accuse anyone of anything, but I do find it somewhat interesting that her dad happens to be head of Disney studios.

Straight men watch Magic Mike?

Honest question. Thought it was a movie about male strippers.

If it's a good story and entertaining, who cares what the subject matter is about?

This **** cracks me up when guys act like they're 14 and won't watch something because they're so straight. I've also seen Brokeback Mountain, still not gay...

Maybe the most hilarious was all the guys who complained about Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen. If you disliked a movie because of a few dialogue scenes that happened to have a blue, cgi *****, then maybe you're compensating for something a little deeper rooted.

Of course I'm on a plane with spotty internet when this trailer hits. Will be able to check it out here in a couple of hours, but for the rest of you, enjoy...

With as much drooling over men as you do here on a daily basis, you make a comment like that?

Not against watching it, just personally wouldn't be interested in watching it unless invited by a female friend or something.

Always figured it was made specifically for females, like Sex and the City or Twilight.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about the movie except what I've seen in the trailers. Seemed like the kind of movie made for girls night out and date nights. If it's anything like Boogie Nights, I definitely need to check it out.

Thanks for posting the trailer. Looks good, can't wait to see it. I have an uneducated sense they are going to make Jobs seem "evil", maybe that's just from the shots of Fassbender though.

Definitely looks good. Still can't get over how little Fassbender looks like Steve Jobs though, but I'm sure his performance will be great.

Looks really good to me. The script is supposed to be amazing, and the trailer alone has half a dozen just amazing lines!

The trailer is word for word from the original script, which is definitely encouraging.

New Steve Jobs biopic is shaping up to be Apple's worst nightmare

quote:
After mounting a campaign earlier this year to burnish the legend of Steve Jobs, Apple insiders will likely be tearing out what's left of their hair when a new biopic is released in October.

The first official trailer released yesterday for Steve Jobs depicts the legend in full jerk mode. Humiliating employees, alienating cofounder Steve Wozniak, and denying paternity of his daughter, Lisa.

Starring Michael Fassbender as Jobs and Seth Rogen as Wozniak, every frame of the two-minute trailer shows us an arrogant, smug Jobs.

The portrayal shouldn't be surprising given that the script was written by Aaron Sorkin and is based on Walter Isaacson's biography of the Apple guru.

Sorkin gleefully twisted the backstory of Facebook cofounder Mark Zuckerberg a few years ago when he penned the script for The Social Network. That film showed Zuckerberg as a misogynistic ass who created Facebook because he was a rejected by a woman, and then proceeded to stab every other friend in the back as he clawed his way to the top of a giant pile of money. Where he sat sad and alone.

This is the only thing I'm a little concerned about. I don't think there is any doubt that Jobs could be a jerk, and you have to be somewhat to achieve what he did. But as much as I loved The Social Network, Zuckerberg's personality and motivations weren't very accurate. Not saying the guy hasn't stepped on a few toes, but he's not some vengeful, machiavellian pr*ck the way Eisenberg portrayed him.

Uhhh... yes actually I am concerned about accuracy. Facebook is a cultural phenomenon that has changed how the world communicates, and the story behind it was almost too interesting to be real: guy is hired to build a social network. Runs in another direction with the idea and creates his own embodiment of it. The product grows so quickly that they can't even keep up. Friends are alienated as they all try to steer this leviathan that might be driving them more than they're driving it. And in the process, they redefine social interaction.

I'd like to see the real story behind the guy that created it and how it came to be, not some artistically embellished junk. If you don't find that entertaining and a story that needs to be told, then you're boring.

As for Jobs, I think the guy really was a dick. An inspirational, creative dick, but a dick nevertheless. If you're going to tell his story, that needs to be in it. Because his take-no-prisoners edge and his belief that his way was not only the best but worth fighting created a 3/4 trillion dollar company. And that's an interesting story.

Saw the movie last night. Really, really good, but not quite great. There were times when I was legit thinking it was one of the best (if not one of the most unique) movies I've ever seen. But then the third act happened, which, for me at least, was kind of dud compared to the two acts/launches before it. Frankly, it just gets to the point where you're rolling your eyes a bit that the exact same four people keep showing up to bug Jobs each time right before he goes on stage. Don't get me wrong - it all makes for fantastic drama, but definitely comes with a suspension of disbelief, which is hard to hold on to by the end.

The third act is also super schmaltzy. I totally get how Jobs' relationship with his daughter is ultimately the main arc and heart of the movie, and I'm fine with that in theory, but I felt that Sorkin steered a little too much toward it in the end. Especially with the iPod mention on the roof (you'll know what I'm talking about), which is just the icing on the cake in terms of forced ridiculousness.

Overall, though, definitely don't miss this one in theaters. The audience I saw it with absolutely loved it (and gave it a big round of applause at the end), there are tons of great one-liners, and the acting is phenomenal across the board. Fassbender, in particular, was amazing. As has already been discussed, he looks nothing like Jobs, but he captures Jobs' spirit better than I think DiCaprio or Bale ever could (who were both attached at various points).

Can't wait 'til more people see it so we can discuss. It's out in NY and LA this weekend, then finally expands wide on October 23.

Really, I need to see it again to give it a fair shake. The third act is probably a lot better than I'm giving it credit for. This is just my gut reaction.

Honestly, I'm not sure. It's absolutely one of the top performances of the year, I just don't know if it'll end up being one of the top five. It's too early to say. On one hand, it's just him yelling and being a dick for two hours, but he's really, really good at it. And it's cool to see him "age"/mellow, especially in the final act when he's significantly older.
Brian Earl Spilner

I know he'll never win, but it'd be great to see Cranston get a nom for Trumbo. I want to see him get more leading roles.

This movie was fine, but you have to stack it against The Social Network, and that was far superior. I'm an unabashed Sorkin fanboy, and this was definitely peak Sorkin given the structure...the slight problem comes with the structure itself, which Sorkin chose. The dialogue and walk and talking is superb and gives perfect insight into the characters, it just all felt too forced in a way TSN never did. TSN can be debated from a factuality standpoint all day, but in terms of strict dramatic narrative, it's almost perfect (with an acceptable level of cheese cough Rashida Jones character). This one feels forced beyond the level of acceptability.

The performances were superb (the drifting Kate Winslet accent aside which I rarely notice) and the dialogue is crackling as expected from Sorkin, the whole thing just didn't quite hang together as well as I'd wanted it to. I loved the jumpy three act structure in theory going in, and it worked much more poorly than I expected. Not sure what the other options were though, the story itself isn't remotely as tight as TSN.

I read the book and have no idea how you tell the story of this man in such a short time. The book was long and detailed. Surprisingly balanced. But it really demonstrated the evolving of the man.
