We've all seen shows movies adapted from books and of course everyone knows that there are going to be liberties taken. Usually you have a lot of exposition and side stories that have to be trimmed down to get the pacing of tv/movie right. I think everyone expects and is ok with that. But as had been mentioned in this thread, this is something much different: rather than pare down stuff from the book, they are adding times, places, and characters that make it a fundamentally different story. I would say the only thing they share in common is the main character's name, but even that was changed for some reason.
So for folks that read the book, what they're seeing is like some weird game of telephone, where it almost sort of resembled something the point of reference they started from, but has been twisted into something almost unrecognizable.
