I need to go back and listen to disc 2. It's my amnesiac: I unfairly consider it an inferior collection of B sides

Well said. You and Whose Army and Life in a Glass House are ridiculously good tunes.

I would expect nothing less from an Upstate gal.

The Bends is awesome. "Just" and "Fake Plastic Trees" have been tow of my favorite songs for the last month.

Anybody listened to the new album yet? Just bought it, listening now...

About to download it. I guess I'll do with iTunes. I am an old school CD guy though. I like the physical media and the liner notes. Sucks that you don't get an instant download of the album with the CD version. I would go that route if so. But I guess the future is now and it's time to go digital

Also,. True Love Waits!!! One of my favorite songs of theirs. I'll be interested to see what this version sounds like.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised by that too, that the physical media purchases didn't get you an instant download (UNLESS you did the $90 fancy package). Seemed kind of unlike them

Listened to it. Hopefully I like it better on the second go round. Also the true love waits was disappointing.

Hoping to change my opinion on subsequent listens.

Looks like most of the reviews so far are really positive

Very first impressions:

I'm looking forward to another listen. KOL after one listen, I felt like I was going to have to let it work on me awhile (spoiler: it never got there). There were some bright spots with this one though, and I have a feeling in the end I will like this one much more than KOL

Overall though, to go back Jim's thoughts on Amnesiac, it feels like a collection of Bsides from some other, better, (hopefully) yet to be heard album.

The upside is, Radiohead B sides are great.

Have you tried OK Computer? That is one of the best albums in the last 30 years imo. And I can't get into some of their other stuff.

Pitchfork did mention that 7 of the 11 tracks have been around in some form though the years, so there is some merit to the feeling like these weren't songs written with one singular album feel in mind.

I strapped on my headphones and listened to it lying in bed last night (one of my favorite things to do with a new album) and just finished a second listen.

Overall I like it. I am not blown away but it is quality Radiohead.

True Love Waits... I feel like this is a microcosm of my feelings on the current state of Radiohead. I have loved that song since I picked up "I Might Be Wrong" over a decade ago. Even learned how to play it on guitar. The beauty of that song is that it is SIMPLE and MELODIC. Which brings me to the new version.... What the **** are the ten layers of random broken piano and jack in the box crank music?? I can understand the abandoning the acoustic guitar for a piano, and I LOVE the bass guitar that comes in, and if it were JUST the piano and bass I think it would be BEAUTIFUL. Overall it's still pretty lovely, but I just don't understand the need for so many damn layers. Sometimes I think Radiohead just throws in as many ambient sounds as possible instead of focusing on what the song NEEDS.

Two memes to sum up my feelings on the song:

Good stuff Jim. Totally agree on TLW, it sounds like his kids are ****ing around on toy pianos in the next room, and you just want him to yell "shut up, children! Daddy's finally recording this ****ing song from 1995!"

I gave it a couple more listens today, one of which was on a cold gloomy morning train ride, so, I was definitely in prime Radiohead-listening-to head space.

It is growing on me. Not in the since that it needed to win me over, but it's just one of those that needs a few listens so that you can anticipate and roll with the zigs and zags.

I'm gonna give it one more day, and then give some track by track thoughts.

So far though, I think I might love it.

So I know Creep (and think it's good). I heard another song of theirs (not sure what) and I didn't like it. So I haven't given them much of a shot. But I'll have to admit, they got staying power. Can somebody name me another good song that I might like?

I'm really starting to come around based on subsequent listenings. Listening to it with good headphones is really helping the experience. I really want to hear how they'll do these songs live. They did a really good job performing "In Rainbows" and "The King of Limbs" live from the BBC basement.

As you may know, their sound has changed quite a bit over the years. If you're really interested, here's (IMO) a good little primer with tracks from each album:

The Bends: Just
OK Computer: Paranoid Android, Karma Police
Kid A: Kid A, Everything in Its Right Place
Amnesiac: Knives Out
Hail to the Thief: 2+2=5, There There
In Rainbows: Jigsaw Falling Into Place, Nude
King of Limbs: Lotus Flower (I guess)
Moon Shaped Pool: Daydreaming, True Love Waits

Really like Ful Stop and The Numbers.
Professor Frick
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I think The Numbers is my favorite. There's an acoustic show Thom did a while back where it was recorded as "Silent Spring", I was hoping it would be on this album.

Here:

Also really like Desert Island Disk and Present Tense. That little samba beat on Present Tense threw me off at first, but it really works.

I have realized, as I should have known, this album really deserves a nice pair of headphones and a QUIET place. This album is really restrained in a lot of ways. First coupe of listens I didn't like how down in the mix the bass and drums were for the most part, but then I sat down and listened closer and there are some subtle little things going on here. It's a very 'mature' album, I guess you could say. Nigel Godrich's production on this one is just amazing. There are so many places where I'm surprised by the choices they've made, and I'm liking it more everytime I find something new.

I decided to try again.

I listened to all of Ok Computer.

I dug electioneering, but still not mindblowing to me....Most of the rest ranged from OK to boring or "ooh I like this part...wait wwoah wait what just happened..i don't..."

I think the too many layers comment is definitely spot on. Plus, no matter how hard I try, I cna never seem to understand the lyrics.

No judgement, everybody likes what they like, but this was funny to me that the one song on OKC that you dug is generally considered the worst song on the album.

Speaking of Exit Music and lyrics, I realize it was for Romeo and Juliet, but I've always for some reason heard it from the point of view of a mother singing to her children, as they wake up and escape an abusive husband/father. It's pretty poignant when you relisten to it like that:

quote:
Wake from your sleep,
the drying of your tears,
Today we escape, we escape.

Pack and get dressed
before your father hears us,
before all hell breaks loose.

Breathe, keep breathing,
don't lose your nerve.
Breathe, keep breathing,
I can't do this alone.

Sing us a song,
a song to keep us warm,
there's such a chill, such a chill.

And you can laugh a spineless laugh,
we hope your rules and wisdom choke you.

And now we are one
in everlasting peace,

we hope that you choke, that you choke,
we hope that you choke, that you choke,
we hope that you choke, that you choke.

Had a similar thought. Was thinking, that's like the one song I skip every time. Different tastes

Ok,

I've listened to this nonstop for four days now, and I think I'm ready to put it in its right place.

I'm going

OK Computer
Kid A/ Amnesiac
A Moon Shaped Pool
In Rainbows (barely edged out)
Hail to the Thief
The Bends (could have tied with Hail to the Thief)
Pablo Honey
The King of Limbs
