Hard to take him serious when he says that Gosling and Stone didn't have any chemistry together

I would have probably walked out after the opening number had I been alone. Just not my cup of tea, but thought with Gosling and Stone I would enjoy it.

They were great, but again, just not my cup of tea. Did anyone else not find it too long? I thought it could have been done in about 20-30 min less.

Still haven't seen it; I'm still over here trying to figure in what world the Dave Matthews Band is considered 'artsy'.

Don't go see it unless you're a Grease or Glee fan or you're so enthralled with the very concept of Hollywood that you can't pass it up.

Right here. And I'd guess that most people on here saying how great it is won't be lining up to see it again. Other than the pool scene, it was that forgettable.

Couldn't care less about Grease, Glee, or "the very concept of Hollywood," and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

It's so tough around this board to figure out whether someone is being subtly funny or unintentionally ironic. Seems like the kind of person who uses Grease and Glee as the barometer for Hollywood musicals might also find DMB artsy.

Went with my wife after we bought tickets to Passengers and there were only spotty single seats in the theater, so we walked out and saw La La Land. It was outstanding.

What sucks about movies is that everyone has to have the same reaction. We can't like them for personal reasons or have different experiences when watching them.
I am a place right now where I have to decide whether to move to follow the person I love or try to make it work long distance. Going into the theater, I just liked the idea of the movie and the cast. I had no idea the plot.

This movie caused me more angst, sadness, and introspection than almost any other movie for me. Like Doc said, it hit me harder than I thought it would. It was extremely well done and is a great examination of which choices you make in life and following your dreams. Do you compromise or stay true to yourself? When you throw in some of the "gift of the Magi" type lessons, I think it hit some pretty perfect notes for where I am in my life right now.

I agree with some that the songs weren't as strong as I was expecting, but I don't think the movie is really about the songs after seeing it. Edit: took out a potential spoiler.

Disclaimer: I do like musicals

I saw it this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it deserves all the awards it will win and did a good job of capturing some of the classic movie feel.

However, I think it had a hard time finding its identity. It starts out with an upbeat song and dance number and then follows it up with another in the apartment with the roommates, then it lost all feel of a musical. Sure there were a few more song and dance scenes, but they are not at all similar to the first two.

I am not going to let that minor aspect impact my viewing of it though, I will just focus on the post pool party part of the movie as the identity they were going with.

Let me rephrase the edit and ask the question in a way not to spoil the movie. Do you think the musical numbers followed the arc of the characters, where they started and where the ended up?

Because personally I feel they did. They both started out chasing their dreams. They were still living in the world of endless possibilities and thinking they will both get what they want out of La La Land. So the number were kind of big and brash. Then after the party, their lives started changing. That's when you start getting the romantic, whistful songs, when their relationship is budding. Then the introspection of their relationship begins to move us into the more soulful songs. Her audition song was her deciding she had to give up on love to find her dream and his final act was alone on a stage. I thought for the most part, the music followed the characters lives pretty well.

This movie should not be compared to Broadway musicals like Grease or ones that Glee did. This movie is much closer to an old Hollywood musical like Singing in the The Rain (which by the way is amazing if you haven't seen it) set in modern times where things don't always work out perfectly.

Leaving college I had to choose between two different job choices at NASA or at Schlumberger. They would have lead to very different life styles. After seeing this movie my wife and I talked about that other life at that other job. This movie perfectly captured that life sometimes hinges on decisions like that. Two different paths open up from one decision and life is what happens when you are busy making other plans. Occasionally you'll catch glimpses of that other life, and it can look tempting or it can look terrible. I thought the back half of the movie captured all of that beautifully.

I agree, it did a good job of following their arc but I thought it did a better job after the pool party.

It would have been just as enjoyable for me with out the big musical numbers of the first two, which I did enjoy, as it would of if it would have kept to the more individual musical numbers of the rest of the movie.

Streep is overrated and thinks she's way more important than she is. Classic Hollywood narcissist.

Emma Stone on the other hand is the complete opposite. She comes off as fun and appreciative...and unlike so many of those 'crusaders' in that industry....doesn't take herself too seriously.

Yeah, as much as she turns me off politically (someone tweeted a pic of her giving Roman Polanski a standing ovation years back), she's pretty friggin' amazing.

While solid, to me at least, this is the film equivalent of Dave Matthews Band. It's "look how awesome and artsy I am while I do artsy crap for the sake of being artsy".

Agree to disagree. She is a talented actress, but I think her image and perception is overstated.

Saw it today at lunch in a surprisingly full theater and it rated a 10 for me. It's not a musical in the classical sense but Stone and Gosling's chemistry hit the feels perfectly. Amazing story telling and cinematography. Loved it.

EDIT: Near the end when Emma is singing about her aunt in Paris the perfectly behaved newborn a couple of seats down picked a quiet moment to unload into his diaper. Loudly.

Saw it a couple days ago... full theater, sat in the corner of the 3rd row for an awkward viewing angle. While watching I was thinking this was OK... enjoying, but OK. Then my wife later tells me I was smiling the whole time. After a couple of days of re-listening to the soundtrack and thinking about the different plot points, I think this movie just has that unknown "IT" factor that seems to be connecting with so many people. It's the antidote to the narcissistic Hollywood that so many of us who love the movies are unknowningly yearning for. It's a beautiful and fanciful throw back to the Hollywood that makes Hollywood the draw and attraction that it is, but in modern day times.

Wife and I were talking about how glad we are that THIS movie is what is getting so much hype in the golden globes (and beyond hopefully), rather than yet another depiction of some high-and-mighty, ivory tower, lecture on how we should be thinking about politics or world events.

Maybe I just want to go to the movies and step away from the weight of reality. Thanks to the team of La La Land for making this fun movie.

I finally got the opportunity to see this a few days ago. The theater was only half full, but it was on a weeknight. One older couple walked out about a third of the way through, not sure if they hated it that much or what. I rarely see people in the back of the theater like they were walking out.

I went in with zero expectations because of this thread. I think it was a good movie. Was it Wizard of Oz good? No, not that good. To me it was a throwback to the musical movies of the 1930's/1940's. No you cannot compare to a Broadway musical brought to the screen.

They had singing, dancing and even tap dancing! I didn't know Hollywood still knew what tap dancing was! The plot had a good foundation and I thought it could have used another musical number toward the 2nd half. Overall it reminded me of the black and white musicals I grew up watching. They took modern romance and added 1940's musical and meshed them together.

Really reminded me of the movies the studios would pump out when they had all their "stars" under contact to the studio and not specific movies. I enjoyed the musical and dance numbers.

I don't always enjoy Gosling (blasphemy I know coming from a female) but with Emma Stone it worked. And whoever said they didn't have chemistry can go jump in a lake. I always like Emma Stone and she seems so real in this movie.

Anyhow it's not for everyone, but one of the better musicals to come from Hollywood in years.

If you didn't like the movie, which you've made abundantly clear, you obviously didn't like the plot. Those of us who enjoyed the movie thought it was a compelling story told in a unique and creative way. We seem to be in the majority. There's no use in trying to convince you it was a good movie so shhhh.

"but one of the better musicals to come from Hollywood in years."

From the music/dance side I'd say it was one of the worst.

For me it was an ok light hearted drama that happened to have some musical numbers. They could have done less (like 60 days of summer), or much more/better (like a real musical) and I would have enjoyed it much more. But I'm in the minority on this one.
