Did I say I was in love with the soundtrack or dance numbers? No

Overall the movie worked, plots, characters, casting, film and music were good.

I like Jazz, but thought they could have done better with the music. The dancing was a bit suspect in scenes, but considering you don't need to sing and dance to be an actor anymore I thought they did a decent job.

If they had filmed a similar movie 75 years ago you might have gotten Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. We just don't have actors with those kind of backgrounds because it isn't required anymore.

So I think considering it is 2017 and Hollywood hasn't done a musical like this (Broadway musicals don't count) in forever I think they did a good job. Could it have been better? Of course. Until Hollywood does musicals on a regular basis I doubt we get anything earth shattering.

"but one of the better musicals to come from Hollywood in years."

From the music/dance side I'd say it was one of the worst.

For me it was an ok light hearted drama that happened to have some musical numbers. They could have done less (like 60 days of summer), or much more/better (like a real musical) and I would have enjoyed it much more. But I'm in the minority on this one.

The drama part also wasn't good. It's forgettable.

Man, this really bothered you, huh? Ventured into the politics board this am.

Does it bother you that it bothered me?
I'd say amuse, not bother.

Why would a celebrity's opinion matter this much to you?

I don't think one sentence on a message board constitutes as "mattering this much" to me, but if you're amused by it go ahead

The people on this thread who apparently LOATHE this "chick flick" (and yet continue to monitor and post on it), sure seem far more sensitive than those who thought it didn't absolutely suck.

Seriously if you don't like the movie tell us and move on.

Don't keep coming back to repeatedly tell us you don't like it over and over again.

Saw it again but this time with the whole family last night. Again, a surprisingly full theater so much so that we were stuck on the second row which was way way too close for some of those big numbers.

I caught a few things I didn't catch the first time around and still loved it.

I enjoyed it, but many of the musical numbers felt kind of awkward and a bit pointless. (The party and the tap dancing on the street come to mind.)

Overall, it was good but not particularly memorable for me. I actually think I enjoyed Sing Street more.

Not sure I have anything to add here except I'm surprised there's not more talk here about Emma Stone's performance. I thought she was absolutely fantastic. That first audition scene was so good, but so brutal. Really enjoyed the movie.

I couldn't make it through that article. Probably because I'm at work. But it also read pretty d*uchey.

Most of all, I just saw Singin in the Rain for the first time yesterday and Make Em Laugh was still one of the highlights.

It did reiterate what has been said on this thread a bit though - La La Land is a different kind of musical, or maybe barely a musical at all. Singing in the Rain has a ~10 minute song and dance number in the final stretch of the film that has literally nothing to do with the story. There's spontaneous dancing throughout. In La La Land, you mostly stop getting those after the tap dance duet. Which is before they start dating. Which means the majority of the film has no traditional "musical" numbers, at least as I understand it.

Funny that you mention Singing in the Rain. When my wife and I saw it, we were the youngest people in theatre by 30+ years. When the lights came on after the movie, some old lady sitting behind us told her friend "I mean, I liked it, but it's no Singing in the Rain." Had both of us cracking up.

My wife and I saw it last night, place us in the camp that loved it, I'm no prude but it was refreshing to watch beautiful cinementography without fear of gratuitous sex and vulgarity, solely for the purpose of being vulgar. If nothing else I adopted my new favorite phrase, pishy caca

Ha, perhaps since I rented some new releases over the holidays with both my parents and teenagers in attendance and too many over the top scenes that provided nothing to the plot yet created some uncomfortable family viewing time

I'm in my 30s and watching a movie with those kinds of scenes with my parents still makes me uncomfortable!

I'm guessing that is why my mom is obsessed with the Hallmark channel sometimes.

Movie was near flawless. Not really my style of movie at all, but there's no denying the acting, the cinematography, the direction. The story was cookie cutter, but i am glad they didn't end up together

If you haven't seen this. Pretty much how I feel when I hear anybody say they didn't like it or just thought it was ok.

This thread has been an interesting read. When I saw it, I thought it was a good movie but didn't quite get all the hype and talk about best picture of the year.

I listened to the soundtrack again and it made me like it more. I saw it a second time recently with the in-laws and really enjoyed it much more than the first viewing.

I'm not sure why it didn't fully grab me the first time but man this is a great movie.

Not Titanic good. Titanic is one of those films that changed the way people think about an event in world history, and it managed to do it through the guise of a fictional romance. That's no easy feat. I've been on this earth for thirty years, and the only truly transcendent films In that time span that I can recall off the top of my head are "Titanic" and "Saving Private Ryan". Gladiator revived and romanticized the Roman era, but I'm not sure if that can qualify as transcendent.

There is something to be said about a film that can avoid unnecessary usage of sex and profanity. I don't actively think about it during a film, but I did note that after La La Land for whatever reason. This was not my cup of tea, but it was beautiful on screen and well-made.

This is where it'll make its lasting mark. The visuals were the best thing the film had going for it. Pretty slick stuff.

Not one nomination for Sing Street. Pretty disappointing, tbh. I personally enjoyed it more than La La Land.

I enjoyed La La Land more, but Drive it Like You Stole It should have been nominated over any of the songs in La La Land.

I finally got around to seeing this with the girlfriend this weekend. We both enjoyed it, but agreed that it drags a bit in the middle. I love the way they used long shots and I loved the lighting. The progression of the main theme was cool to hear, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the theme to begin with.

Stone and Gosling were perfect for these roles, IMO. I saw a mention earlier in the thread when I was skimming through it that Emma Watson and Miles Teller were up for these roles and I'm glad they made the casting decisions that they did.

The ending was incredible and more than made up for the dragging in the middle. I'm glad the writers didn't just take the easy way out and have them end up together.

All-in-all, a well-acted, borderline great movie but one that I don't think I will feel the need to watch again for a long time.

I liked both a lot but I too liked Sing Street more. Drive it like you stole it is a really good song.
