SOUNDTRACKS are traditionally an assemblage of old and/or new pop, classic rock, country, etc. singles, many of which are used in the movie itself. Aka, songs you'd mainly hear on the radio.

SCORES are traditionally orchestral/choir music written by a composer.

Some soundtracks combine the two, but I think for the purpose of this thread, we're talking about the former.

Speaking of, what was the last great ORIGINAL song written specifically for a movie that was also a hit single / on the radio. In the vein of Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" (Batman Forever), Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" (Titanic), or Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," etc. I can't remember the last time this was popular.

I truly hate myself for even mentioning it but the entire slew of Twilight movies had good indie music soundtracks that they didn't deserve.

I also like when a Soundtrack tries to do something interesting (even if it doesn't work out). Here are some examples, I'm trying to think of more but completely blanking.

  • Spawn - Every song was a rock band paired with EDM group
  • I Am Sam - All Beatles covers
  • Sky High - All 80's covers
  • Not Another Teen Movie - All John Hughes Movies / 80's Covers

Super Fly is probably the best blaxploitation soundtrack and one of the best soundtracks ever.
