Spoiler Golden path discussion:
This isn't meant to be political, but I recently reread the Dune books. They're actually quite brilliant. As I understand it, Leto's Golden Path was many things, among them was a centuries-long effort to remove human patterns and apathy from the human race so we don't' render ourselves extinct.
He essentially "trapped" generations of people in a stale existence that chafed at who we are as warm-blooded animals. He didn't allow violence (except by him) and made the entire human race realize that peace was, in many respects, not what people truly wanted. They wanted good. They wanted bad. They wanted struggle. This is what gives us purpose as opposed to mere existence.
When he was killed, the human race expanded, and became more violent than ever before because of the cycles in human behavior Leto broke, right?
(Again, not trying to be political) I observe today how people are being asked to stay home, and no matter what side you're on regarding that issue, everyone seems to be seeking out the conflict. Everyone is looking for purpose and struggle, even when we could be relaxing about our homes in "peace". Many of us are really having a tough time for various reasons after 2-3 months of quarantine. Imagine the ramifications of being forcefully kept this way for a millennia?! It would definitely take an emperor to force that to happen, though I'm not sure that we'd branch out afterwards, or just be mindless drones.
Interesting. It's been so long since I read Dune my grasp of the finer details is long gone. I do have this on my reread list for this year though.
This is a good reading of the Golden Path. One of the goals of Leto II was to demonstrate that absolute safety without meaning / conflict was not very different than death. The parallels with Leto II's home becoming more and more like a tomb over time, his relative boredom with existence, and continual defeat of Idaho's attempts on his life due to his prescient abilities are a parallel to the existence of the rest of the human species during this time.
So, the parallels with the quarantine and woke culture / ANTIFA are good analysis. We have to find causes to get behind, to find passionate struggle. If we don't have a major enemy to rally around to fight, we will find other, less important enemies / struggles, and that results in unnecessary division between each other. Are micro aggressions and centuries old statues really worth burning cities over? This natural instinct to need something to fight for can easily be manipulated, and often is.
The second part of the Golden Path though has to do with the contradictions between prescience and free will. If you can see the future, and your actions can have an impact on the future, do you really have choice to make those actions? The ramifications of your actions are already determined by your prescient vision. The golden path sought not just the scattering, but human kind's separation from prescience as a way of life. The Bene Gesserit had used prescience to rule humanity for a very long time. Leto just used it better, and more forcefully. By restricting spice, humans had to invent tools to replace prescience to navigate space, and they were able to divorce themselves from the spice in order to scatter. In addition, by having a race of humans that could not be detected through prescience, humans were able to scatter into unknown regions of the universe and expand without being "spied" on.
This was necessary to avoid an apocalypse that would have wiped out humans. By spreading to the wind, for one, and avoiding the dependence on the spice / prescience, humans couldn't be tracked down by an unnamed enemy in the future.
The dependency on spice / prescience to preserve the Empire has some parallels to the 1970's / 1980's when the books were written. Dependence on oil, our inability to travel through space, the need for scientific advancement to spread beyond earth, our tendency to follow our charismatic leaders because that is an easier path than revolution, all mixed in there.
I'm excited for the series.
It takes a special kind of brainwashed useful idiot to politically defend government fraud, waste, and abuse.
