You're not remembering that wrong. The first time these dudes were mentioned, it was about how Ryan Duke got drunk at a party and said that he killed Tara. I was thinking that because of the podcast people were talking about it and it was something that happened recently. After they talked about it again, though, was when they said that this conversation was ten years ago and the rumor had been floating around before.
Just really weird that the police never would have talked to him or swabbed him then. Like you, I thought it was Dykes, with probably another officer helping him cover it up.
I feel a bit bad for Payne - he had this Podcast going that got really popular and he expanded the series - he had so much material with all these conspiracy theories out there - then the arrests happen with the gag order and there isn't much left to talk about until some more news comes out - which doesn't look like to be coming anytime soon.
Lucky he got his kickstarter funded for season 2 already. He'll have some free time to devote to the new case.
But what about all those ads he already sold when he decided to add more episodes. Oh noes

I'll have to confess to being one of the 5 people in America who did not listen to Serial. I heard about that spin-off though, and might give it a listen.
You should check it out. I know stuff can be overhyped, but it was really enthralling.

I binged the hell out of this over the last week and am just about caught up.
I was convinced it was the married cop, Dykes. He had been there during an earlier altercation with the student and the cops hid his name in the report.
He came all that way to just leave a business card? I couldn't figure out why the mother would call a "family friend" who lived an hour away to check on Tara rather than the neighbors who seemed to keep an eye on her, or one of her friends. The mother must have known she was seeing him.
The glove seemed a less important piece of evidence than the state of her house and car - Nancy grace, for all her faults, was much better calling attention to that evidence and the timeline.
I felt he spent too much time patting himself on the back and on the George Harrison thing. The listener theories got a little tiresome too. Serial did a better job laying out evidence -he jumped around a lot. But good podcast

- i think the production value is not very good, esp compared to serial....but maybe not a fair comparison
- payne (sp?) has the strangest cadence...it just seems very forced to me when you hear him reading from what sounds like a script.
overall, an intriguing story.

End of the new episode is pretty interesting
I agree. Although I don't know why Ryan would agree to the charges and confess if it wasn't him. That may not be the case, but there haven't been any statements from Ryan's camp stating that he is innocent that I know of. And given how fast the grand jury handed down the indictment, there doesn't seem to be anyone really presenting any good counter theories. At this point, it seems like Ryan is just trying to get the best plea deal he can get.Hudson2508 said:

I agree that Payne has done a great job for a guy doing this for the first time. I look forward to it every week and oftentimes there is really nothing new to report but it is still very interesting.

It does not matter at all if a podcaster is African-American, and many of us not only don't pay it any mind, we actually prefer a Podcaster of Color for the perspective they being as a member of a marginalized community.
