Pellecanos stated on the Watch podcast that it's planned to be 3 seasons - 42nd street is the main character and season 2 will take place in the late 70s while season 3 will take place in the 80s.

When comes to politics and certain cultural touchstones, absolutely. As for style, though, I feel like we've reached a plateau of sorts. We finally figured out how clothes should fit, what looks good, etc. There's really no where left for suits, jeans, etc. to go. So I honestly don't see fashion, at least, changing as drastically as it did from then 'til now. I think the next step is how technology will be better-integrated with our clothing/wardrobe, which could have some drastic effects, but we'll see.

All I know is that I would have no problem living in the '50s/'60s. I grew up in the '80s and loved that decade as well. But the biggest emotional reaction I had to this pilot was, "Thank God I wasn't alive in the '70s." Nothing about that decade appeals to me in any way, save for maybe the classic rock of the era.
a) style is always regurgitating previous generational looks and discarding the ones that are impractical, overly expensive etc.
b) the next generational change to style is obviously more focused on the materials used and less the cut and fit. My kids don't wear cotton...anything...everything they were is a polyester derivative. Because it's lighter and stays "ironed" wash after wash. They think its too heavy and bulky. All future style will, as you say, include technological advantages (antibacterial, provide feedback to our phones/watches, and maybe color and/or temperature changing.
c) NY in the 70's was dark, dangerous and seedy. Times square was awful. It wasn't a place for tourists.

Franco is killing it!

Really liking this show. Great characters and great acting.

Also the Hi Hat is a kick ass name for a bar.

Finally watched Sunday's epeisode and I am officially hooked. This show is phenomenal. So much potential, too, with all these characters and all these crisscrossing stories. I know a few people who just can't stomach the subject matter, and I totally get that, but the acting is so damn good, and every thread so damn compelling, that I see right past the things that may turn others off.

Also, the entire episode I kept wondering who directed it. It was so well shot. Just the framing, the colors, the camera movement - parts of it were almost Fincher-esque. So I rewound it at the end to check the credits and none other than Franco himself directed it. Between how great The Disaster Artist looks (which he directed as well), how nicely done this episode was, and how great his performances are here, the guy is really coming into his own as of late. Which I know sounds weird to say about someone who's been around for so long, but it's the truth.

Cannot wait to see him and this show continue to evolve.

15 minutes into ep 2 and for the wire fans... Levy was the cop at the station locking up the cattle heard of *****s and Frank Sobotka is hanging with both James franco characters at a home kitchen table.

Edit. Didn't mean to click on that emoticon.

Frank Sobotka is playing almost the exact same character it feels like. Not that I'm complaining, just find it funny.

I caught Ralph right off the bat and wondered: when was the last time I saw him in ANYTHING. But he fits this role so far.

...oh except this one time when he popped up on HIMYM as himself with William Zabka (Johnny from Cobra Kai dojo) the real star of Karate Kid according to Barney.

Just googled Macchio
Quote:

On August 4, 2017, it was announced that Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel Larusso in a 30-minute, 10-part Karate Kid revival series for YouTube Red titled Cobra Kai that is set to debut in 2018. He will also co-executive produce the series with William Zabka. The series is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and revolves around a down-and-out Johnny Lawrence who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel Larusso, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi.[18]

30 min 10 part.
Does that mean 10 episodes that are 30mins long? Or 30 min story cut into 10 parts?

The only thing I keep thinking when I watch is...I hope like hell I marry a woman who looks like Abby at age 37

I'm really enjoying this show so far.

Loving this show and seeing so many Wire alums. Slim Charles telling the pimps to respect the ladies was amazing.

I'm super curious on the economics of working with a pimp. They give him all their money at the end of a shift. What's their cut? There's no way out if he's taking everything. Really sad. And man those theatre and tunnel scenes....grim.

I am finding Maggie G's bewbs to be almost distracting. They are awful and those 70s halter and tube tops are not helping matters.

Her inability to have a normal social interaction with a man, including a kiss, was tough to watch. So well acted.

I'm curious on the no go as well ...I keep calling it Hamsterdam but I don't think the intent is as well meaning as Bunny Colvin's experiment.

Every time I see Maurice Levy as the police sergeant I laugh inside. For some reason he cracks me up in that role.

Man, the street cops look rough....unkempt, dingy.....just dirty looking. And the MG scenes are so cringe-worthy. You can almost feel her disgust as she's having to stoop to get paid every night and she wants out so bad.

Kind of like what the short black hooker was saying to the hot waitress last night: you'll never understand the pimp/ho relationship. Put me in the confused side; I just don't get it. I understand the "protection" aspect, but is it just more comfortable to have someone telling them what to do all the time? Daddy issues? Stupidity? Some combo of all of it?

So far, I love the show, but its kind of stalled.

I feel like I've been watching the same episode for 3 weeks. (This, in part, is likely on purpose so you can feel MG's desperation), but I'm ready to progress through some stories. I'm feeling the show get a tad bit stale.

I agree when it comes to her storyline but Franco's character has been progressing, getting in deeper with the mob in the bar business. Episode 4 felt like the bottom for MG, time to drag herself out.

This is a slow burn but I really enjoy it. The acting is top notch and the characters are all very believable. Method Man was great tonight.

Scenery and costumes are great. The music really adds to it as well. Love the music over the ending credits - very Wire-esque.

I must have the worst luck. Was scrolling through HBO channels, remembered hearing how good this show was, and decided to tune in. Not 2 minutes later the most graphic/disgusting/perverted gay sex scene comes on out of nowhere. It was basically hard core porn and I'm not sure how it's allowed to air on HBO. Is this the norm for this show? Hollywood is really trying too hard these days. The in-your-face gay sh** is getting played out.
TCTTS

You're right. They should just stick to showing wholesome, hetero, hooker sex. Forcing gay sex into a show about degenerate sex industries in 1970s New York is just too inaccurate and in-your-face.

Boy no joke. On this show, that's so far down the list it doesn't even register.

I watched one episode, or at least most of one episode. I can certainly see the merits of it. Acting is great, writing is outstanding. Amazing job re-creating the 70's. And Franco is clearly hitting his stride.

But this show is just freakin nasty. All the way around disgusting. And I am no prude by any stretch. But the one episode I watched ended with the morbidly obese sack of sh** that Maggie was blowing, die with his deek in her mouth. And my lord she is just hard to look at.

Hope everyone enjoys but I'm out.

Wycliff was at the movies once and a guy who he thought was an usher asked him, "do you like the movie?" He's never been able to tell anyone what happened after that.
