I ****ing loved this show...this totally makes up for the Vinyl disaster. It's the concept of making 42nd street the main character and taking 8 episodes to get a story of all the various characters without over the top confusing drama and intrigue. I want a David Simon version of Westworld

Maggie was great...I've never really liked her but she was perfect for the role.

Favorite tweet review was "James Franco has amazing chemistry with himself"

I never got around to watching the Wire though I feel that I know all about it just from absorbing pop culture all these years. Maybe now I should finally watch it

So will Season 2 be the same characters just 5 years or so in the future?

If the wire is any indication yes and no.

supposed to be set in late 70s/early 80s.....so like 1979-1980 i think.

so thats about 7 years down the road.

The premier of The Deuce was set in late 1971....but the world premiere of Deep Throat shown near the end of the season was in June 1972.

No clue as to returning stars vs. newcomers though.

yeah....for sure.

the Deuce was good...really good even, but my top 4 is still

Sopranos
Breaking Bad
The Wire
Game of Thrones

in some order that varies from time to time

I can't put another drama in that caliber either....probably not another one in my top 10 of TV shows all-time.

I thought the Deuce was ok, but nothing special. I'll still watch the second season just to see where it goes. Do you guys think I will like The Wire even though I didn't think the Deuce was anything great?

Depends on what made the Deuce "nothing special" for you. If it was...

...the part about the corruption of the police force
...almost all of the actors who played pimps
...the story of moving criminal activity to a single area of town
...the newspaper storyline
...James Franco's brother-in-law

then definitely don't watch The Wire!

(I loved both shows.)

Season 2 is great so far. It looks like the pimps are realizing their time may be running out...

Reminder that the third and final season of one of the best shows on TV starts Monday night at 9 PM ET...

Monday? What up with that?

HBO has increased their programming output, and in doing so has made Monday night an original programming night as well, starting with Chernobyl earlier this year.

TTT for tonight. Let's head to the 80's.

Really enjoyed this series so far. Interested in where they take it now that they are in the 80's.

I was about to cancel HBO after GOT ended but I hung around for this show (and the Deadwood movie).

Finally saw Monday night's episode, and it's so good to have this show back. The '80s give it a whole new flair, and everyone is as good as they've ever been. I keep forgetting how good Franco, in particular, is. The twins really do feel like two completely different people. Dude absolutely deserves an Emmy.

I seriously can't believe we have another five weeks of this and Succession airing on HBO on back-to-back nights. I feel spoiled.

Is this a series where I can jump in at the start of season 2 and be ok with where the storylines and characters are? I watched some of season 1 and for whatever reason quit watching... don't really want to have to start all over at the beginning of season 1.

Yeah, I think so. Season two is set five years after season one (jumps from 1972 to 1977). I think it helps to have a rough idea of who the main characters and relationships are, but the plot lines themselves are basically new. That, and they do a good job of providing context through dialogue, so I think you'll be fine. Season two is fantastic, btw, so it's definitely worth catching up.

I am really enjoying season three so far, it has absolutely lived up to the previous seasons.

Does anyone feel like Simon will ultimately have Candy end up out of porn but shooting real life docu-footage of prostitutes, pimps, crime & Life on the Street as some sort of full circle to his career?

Awesome. Doing some catching up on True Detective Season 3 then the Deuce is next.

Anyone still watching????

I just started S3 after catching up on some other shows.

Set in 1984 it jumps right in and has the period stuff down. Although the opening track threw me for a loop a bit. "I Melt With You" is surely an iconic 80s song but was released in 1982 and was the title track for Valley Girl in early 1983. Just so much more of a Cali song then a NY song to me for that reason but it's a great song so let's just roll with it. lol.

Maybe we need an official S3 thread????? I searched and di not find one.

Yeah, I'm still watching and still enjoying it. Sad that it is already wrapping up next week.

There is not much left on my regular TV watch schedule these days.

I guess that I am going to give Watchmen a few more episodes before I make a final decision on whether to pull the plug on HBO. Not off to a great start for me though.

I'm watching. We are down to the series finale airing next Monday. This is one of those shows where I am not sure how much I actually like it, but I do find it interesting enough to bring me back each time. Not exactly a feel good kinda show.

Last two episodes sure did end darkly. Clearly, that is the theme to the final season. Looks like nobody gets a happy ending.
Do, or do not. There is no try.

Like the last season of the Sopranos, when they started killing off characters left and right.

Still watching but this season was a little tougher to get through. I think it's mostly the Candy storyline, which I have never been able to give 2 ****s about. Also never gave a crap about Abby's lesbo liaison. I've enjoyed the Lori story and Vincent story though.

Despite the obvious dark nature of the subject matter, I loved seasons 1 and 2 because they felt like "David Simon light." It was everything I loved about Simon without all the death and gut-wrenching heartbreak. It was even genuinely "fun" at times and I really grew to love the cast. But now it's obvious that was all set up for season 3, in which Simon is back to being Simon, pulling no punches, killing beloved characters left and right, to the point where I feel guilty for ever finding any of this even remotely "fun" at times. That said, I still love this show and it's as good as it's ever been. What an achievement. Can't believe we only have one episode left.
Wes97

Yeah that sums up my view. Find myself really looking forward to this show every week even though it isn't "fun."
It's all of the little details that make this show so entertaining.

I am going to miss it.

Agree on the details being right. I was just thinking that during the last episode when Franco was hiding the pistol in the closet. Each item on the shelf looked authentic to not just 1985, but like a guy who had lived in that apartment for at least ten years.
Do, or do not. There is no try.

The set detail that really got me this episode was the Visa card Candy handed Lori. I had totally forgotten that Visa cards used to look like that.

And how about the nice wink to the good, the bad, and the ugly in a 1980's New York City massage parlor setting?

Not many shows go that deep with subtle jokes that I can't think too many people would even understand or appreciate.
Bunk Moreland

Still enjoying the show but I think season 3 has been the weakest. I don't give a **** about Abbie & it seems like they plodded around too much in the middle of it. Sucks to see Rudy go, then of course Lori the other night.

Too bad that it's going away so soon.

Series finale last scene was awesome. For anyone else like me that loved season 1 and then slowly lost interest throughout the rest and only half ass watched season 3 I highly encourage watching the last scene. Good stuff.

Wow. What a finale. What a series. I was thrown at the beginning of the final sequence, but yeah, it soon made total sense and was so damn affecting. What a way to go out. Definitely gonna miss this show.

I was totally under the impression in the final sequence that he had just died and was roaming around the Deuce with all his old ghost friends and brother from the past. From him seeing Candy and Lori and also getting the feeling that he was wondering around with nobody paying attention to him.. but maybe thats just how New Yorkers are?? and then seeing Abby walk by nonchalantly just gave me that feeling.

I haven't seen a ton of David Simon's work but after reading reviews from the finale it just sounds like he was having one last drink on the Deuce and was just remembering all the old friends that had passed.

The season overall lost a bit of steam, but that was a very solid finale. I have spent a lot of time in Manhattan over the past 20+ years (particularly midtown), so that aspect of the show was always fascinating to me.
