I was looking for something to watch on Friday and TV had no options, so I checked Netflix and gave 3% a try. I almost turned it off during the first episode, but ended up getting hooked and watching all 8 episodes of season 1 during the weekend.

It's set in some future society where almost everybody is poor. Every year, citizens who turned 20 have a chance to go through a set of tests and trials in order to become one of the 3% who live in a utopian city called "The Offshore".

It has two knocks against it: 1) It's a Brazilian show and they speak Portuguese the whole time, so you have to read subtitles and 2) It's production value is not quite as good as American/European shows. I wouldn't say the show is Breaking Bad good or anything, but it was worth the time I spent watching it, and I'm looking forward to season 2.

Yes, I enjoyed it as well. They also have a dubbed voice option, but it's terrible and much worse than reading subtitles. I can't wait for Season 2...still haven't seen a release date on that however.

I was impressed with the actress that played Julia. She was probably the best on the show.

And to comply with rule #1:

I assume it vilified the rich and made the poor noble and virtuous, correct?

No it did not (at least not in the only season to air so far). I thought it would (and I would have turned it off if it had). It is nothing like Elysium if that is what you are thinking.

It has 2 main story lines... what the candidates do to pass their various tests (which on their own are interesting), and the politics between the people running the tests. In that aspect it is a little like Westworld. You have what is going on in the "game" and what is going on behind the scenes with the people running the "game".

Don't get me wrong, there are people in the show who are against a system that would elevate the top 3% in the first place, but it doesn't make them out to be the "good guys" necessarily.

Yeah that's her. Not only was she nice to look at, she was a pretty damned good actress. Of course, I don't speak Portuguese, so maybe native speakers disagree.

I wanted to watch this, but subtitles? Nope. If I want to read, I will pick up a book... spend more time on Texags.

Does that mean you are missing out on Narcos too? Because that is damn good TV right there.

Not to mention Apocalypto.

Watched it. Enjoyed it. Will watch a second season.

I'm guessing the guy who can't read subtitles doesn't have kids as I watched everything with subtitles nowadays anyways

You can actually change the audio to English if you are against subtitles. Great show!
