I will say the talent on this show is top notch.

I don't think there's one woman in this show that isn't pretty damn hot.

I like the show so far.

I wish it were a mini series with a definite conclusion like "Hatfield & McCoys" and "Waco".

I hope they do have an eventual conclusion in mind so that it doesn't get forgotten like AMC shows like "The Son" or lose viewership like "The Walking Dead"

She's playing the part of Sue Ellen Ewing. Even looks similar to her.

In fact there are several similarities to Dallas. Father (Jock Ewing) with two boys vying for his approval and one, the black sheep, having nothing to do with Dad. Drunk Sue Ellen who sleeps with everybody. It's a 21st century Dallas.
My wife's exact words. She even said this family reminded her of the Ewings. I never watched the show, so I wouldn't know.

And even though the whole scene seemed overly gratuitous....I'd like to thank the filmmakers for the naked Kelly Reilly.

The whole white van thing was just confusing as hell, though. We weren't given one iota of information as to exactly what the hell any of that was.

Same with the trailer that blew up. A big piece of the story, that just came out of nowhere.

Yeah this was annoying. I'm guessing they were meth cooks that kidnapped the girl after she tried to hook up with them or buy meth or something. It was just a plot device to introduce Kayce to the father and to set up something in the future, but I wish they could have figured out another way.

I think the white van thing was a plot device that served 2 purposes...

1) Show that really bad shlt happens on the reservation and it's a place where people go to find loopholes in laws and hide from prosecution. His comment to his son about people taking advantage of the laws was telling.

2) Get dirt on Kayce. He's now murdered someone and hid it. My guess is the body is found and tied back to him. Now the Chief has dirt on him.

But yes it did just kind of come from nowhere and seemed really random. I know one of the points is to show that Kayce is a down on his luck guy scrapping by on the reservation, but no one has had the kinda bad luck run that guy is on.

It's a bit much

So they go and burn/bury the bodies...but no one seems concerned that a nine year old saw the whole thing?

And man, Casey has killed 4 people in two episodes. Quite the body count for a private citizen in a week. I also don't like how he just happened to be driving by again...need to work some of this into the story a bit. It's too easy.

I like the show...but it does have some big eye roll moments.
I like this show a lot but there have been some pretty big eye roll moments for sure. The biggest one for me was Kayce's son killing a large diamondback rattler with his bare hands (and feet?). That is just insulting our intelligence. It's ridiculous enough that they would have a snake slithering TOWARDS a human...but there is just no way that happens.

I get the scene where the calf just got up and ran off because who wants to re-shoot that, especially when at least 2/3 of the audience probably doesn't even catch it. But the rattlesnake thing was just absurd on multiple levels.

Hah! Especially since there are no venomous snakes in Yellowstone, to my knowledge.

ETA, guess there are prairie rattlers. Interesting as park guides told me they didn't have any venomous snakes as inhabitants on tours a few years ago and again about a month ago.

I am thinking Casey has quite the rap sheet off the reservation.

  • He tells his son people come to the Res to hide from the law (paraphrase)
  • He is branded and we just learned they get prisoners as branded workers. I think that indicates Costner got him out of prison in exchange for working on the ranch, which he reneged on.
  • The Wife tells him it is time to quit running when he is pulled over
AgGrad99

Yep...sure seems that way.

Also, I wonder if this is how they get him back in the ranch? Costner said to go get a new ranch hand from prison...kasey's now in prison....

While the kid killing a rattlesnake it a bit much, its really not that hard to kill one if you can manage to stomp the top of its head hard enough.

Just now able to watch last night's episode and the opening scene sounded like a Ryan Bingham song (no vocals played).

Looked it up and sure enough, he wrote music for the show and makes appearances as an actor starting in ep 5

Yep, Bingham, Uncle Lucius, and Whiskey Myers all in the same episode. Can't complain about the music on the show!

I just caught up on the DVR

This show has so much potential. The production, camera work, music, casting are all spot on and top notch.

The writing and storyline are crap. The chief giving some long drama filled speech because he spotted a spiderweb was a stretch at best. The whole bar scene with hardened cowboys was tough to watch. The kid and the luck he has is rivaled only by his dad.

It's a complete 180 from Sheridan's previous work. It's tough because like I said everything else is done really good, but I just don't know how much longer I can hang on.

He's not part of the Costner family, he's part of the branded ranch-hand family. His father is a friend of Costner's and asked Costner to give Jimmy one last chance at saving him from drugs and prison. It's the brand that makes him family.

How about the kid asking Costner about the fresh sutures supposively from abdominal cancer surgery and just 2 hours before he was on a bucking horse.

It may not be very realistic but it wasn't an accident by the writers. I guess I'm more willing to take away the points they are trying to get across without getting wrapped up in details.

In this case, they convey that Dutton is very tough, that everyone knows everyone, reinforce that he rules the cattlemen's association, and most importantly that he is very sick and feeling vulnerable which is why he's trying to get his kids and grandkids back in his life. We also get more humanity and even whimsy out of him than we have so far when he tells his grand son a silly fairy tale instead of saying he fell on a pitchfork or something.

Worrying about whether the bucking horse would have opened up his stitches seems a little petty with all those other things going on.

There's the same kinds of things going on in scenes like the calf birthing, the rattlesnake, the bar fight, and the coincidences on the res. It's like one of the old western melodramas, not a documentary. If the characters start being inconsistent with themselves or the story gets stuck in a dead end I'll complain because those are the reasons you watch a show like this. The point is not to find out how long it takes a newborn calf to walk or discover the statistical frequency of felony crimes on an Indian reservation.

EDIT: Mr. Bond was more concise and will reap the blue stars.

I'm addressing several posts about similar items, this happened to be the latest example.

Good, episode last night. I'm excited to see how much of a role Ryan Bingham's character gets. He's one of my favorite musicians so its pretty cool that he's in the show, not a bad actor either.

I thought the scene in the truck with Jamie and Beth was off. Felt like they wrote the last line first, couldn't figure out how to build to a place where it felt organic, but liked it too much to let it go. Otherwise, good episode.

agree about that scene in the truck.

Also agree it was a good episode overall. Moved the story along.

I wonder if the last line would have worked better with Costner telling it to Jamie in the scene in the house. Advice rather than declaration.

I did like the reservation chief's response about lawyers..

"they should scare you. They're the best at breaking the law" or something close to that.

I thought it was a pretty powerful scene, I just want to know what she ended up shooting! They never showed, which was surprising. Even maybe just when they get back to the ranch, a quick pan over to show a hole in the roof of the truck or whatever.
