"The Many Saints of Newark" is set during the 1960s riots in the New Jersey city between the African-American and Italian communities. The war between the cultural mobs turns especially lethal. According to Deadline, the prequel film will include characters that appeared on the HBO series, most likely younger versions of Tony Soprano's father and mother, played in the original series in flashback by Joseph Siravo and Nancy Marchand. Tony's uncle Junior is also expected to appear.

Chase will serve as producer in addition to co-writer. He'll also be involved in choosing the director to helm the film

Johhny Boy, Livia, Uncle Junior in a period piece ok.....

and please please please a very young Paulie Walnuts like spyder role from goodfellas. Tony Sirico was born in 1942 so Paulie could presumably be anywhere from 10-20 in 1960 I would think. Paulie's bio said he was in trouble since he was 9 and dropped out in the 9th grade.

Silvio would have only just been born in 1959 his bio says.

Besides Michael Gandolfini (19) as younger Tony - which has to be in the 70s sometime not 1962 cuz Tony would have been 7 then

this has Ray Liotta and Vera Farmiga and Corey Stoll (House of Cards)

Christopher's dad Dickie Moltisanti will be a central figure played by Alessandro Nivola

This segment from the Sopranos was a flashback to that same period they are talking about. the Newark riots of 1967.

Young Tony is shown here and his dad and Junor and Janice and Livia.

Tony follows his dad going to an amusement park with Janice as his cover and where he later gets arrested.

the riots are kind of a backdrop here to race relations in the streets - Livia comments about it.

Have they addressed why Tony is about 10yrs older now than he was in the Sopranos universe? Is it just that Chase wants this movie to be set in 1967 instead of 1976?

I've been following this films development for some time and I don't think the age thing will be addressed, and i do think its going to be remain a discrepancy viewers just need to look past.

Actually I do believe even in the Godfather the ages don't really make sense from when Vito's dad is killed and he gets on a boat in 2, to how old Vito looks in the Godfather.

Are there any other names attached? Age discrepancy aside it seems like the success or failure will come down to whether or not Gandolfini has the chops to pull this off.

I don't know. could be or it could be set in 2 time periods - 67 and like 10 years later.

I would imagine Vera Farmiga would be Livia but they are not specifically listed for roles in IMDB.

Vera Farmiga's bit there looks like she's zeroing in on the Livia character pretty well. The little non-verbal snort was spot on.
