Didn't make it thru the first episode. Obviously am in the minority. Not a fan of stuff being overly sexualized to the point of being obnoxious.

Well, it's plainly about psychopathic stalker, so I hope you weren't expecting When Harry Met Sally.
In fact, one my favorite lines in the show was Joe talking to himself about how guys like him in romantic comedies are always getting stuck in "jams like this."

I stopped it as soon as I realized she was masturbating too.

Then I rewound it so I could pay more attention.

Entertaining show where you oddly end up pulling for the psycho. Thought the final scene was lame though

This show has surpassed 13 Reasons Why exponentially as trash with that Netflix label slapped on it somehow becomes magically more entertaining to millions of people. This time with a data point that it aired elsewhere, and no one cared and most of those that actually watched weren't impressed.

I'll admit to getting caught in the Netflix branded trap myself many times, but it truly amazing.

Naw, actually thought it was pretty good, regardless of the Netflix...In a Mr Robot/Dexter fusion sort of way

I'm really surprised anyone didn't find it funny. But I guess like Naio suggested, some of it is funnier if you've spent time around pretensious lit students.

Just finished episode six and I hate myself for saying this, but I'm hooked. It's straight up addictive. Yes, this show is utter, predictable trash - it's basically a Gossip Girl sequel series written by a dime-store thriller novelist - but lol to the couple of you in this thread who are legit upset by it. It knows exactly what it is, is leaning directly into it, and it may have bombed on Lifetime, but that's a Lifetime/cable problem, not a You problem. Netflix recently announced that it was on pace to be viewed by 40 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS in its first four weeks on the platform. That's insane. Cable as we know it dead...

Yep, that was the quickest I've watched a whole season in quite some time. We were hooked.

No doubt. I would have never given this a sniff on cable; probably would have laughed at a commercial for it. Netflix puts it at the top of the menu bar, I read a short description, and say "sounds fun, let's watch it". Netflix has so much power right now, it's insane.

You wrapped on Lifetime in November. From the beginning, Netflix had the second-run U.S. rights and first-run global rights of the show, which is produced by Warner Horizon Scripted Television. When Lifetime passed on a second season, Netflix decided to take over the series completely and ordered Season 2 as an official Netflix original.

A few weeks later, it proved to be a wise decision: Season 1 started streaming and sparked an internet frenzy. Mentions on social media skyrocketed. The stars gained hundreds of thousands of new Instagram followers. Badgley seemed amused at the renewed attention, as he started tweeting back to fans who found his deranged character inexplicably charming. (Note: Gross.) On Thursday, Netflix executives announced in a shareholder letter that they estimate more than 40 million member households will watch You in its first four weeks on the streaming service. (As usual, there's no way to verify these numbers, because Netflix isn't monitored by a third-party.)

Also, I didn't realize shows were that racy on Lifetime.

Maybe they have a modern day version of "USA - Up All Night" on Lifetime these days.

I don't get the "it's popular because it has the Netflix label" argument. There have been some garbage shows on Netflix, so that doesn't fly with me.

Lifetime just seems like the wrong target audience for a show like 'You'. Netflix is just a broader audience.

In the exact same post, I also literally said that I'm hooked and can't stop watching, then went on to laugh at people getting so upset by it. Way to cherry pick there. But it IS bad. I'm only six episodes in and they've recycled the same two plot points over and over and over again - 1) Joe gives Beck a hard truth, she gets pissed, leaves in a huff, later discovers Joe that Joe was right, then comes back hat in hand, apologizes, and they hook up. This exact chain of events has happened at least three times already. Same with 2) Joe entrusting something with Paco, Paco getting caught, Paco crying that he's sorry, and then Joe telling him not to worry about it. Again, this exact thing has happened at least three times. It's predictable as hell and eye-roll inducing more often than not. The concept is great, the execution isn't. At all. And it's ok that I jokingly call that out. I'm not doing so in some snooty way.

That said, what this show does REALLY well is characterization. I know about five Benjis in real life, and one of them is literally a high up at an artisanal soft drink company. Everything about him is spot-on. Beck is annoyingly incompetent, and unfortunately just like more than a few girls I knew in my 20s (something else this show does effectively well is NOT make me miss my 20s). The show also looks great, too. I love the way it's shot and I love all the New York sets/locations. It does a lot well, the best of which is being highly addictive. Again, the show itself knows it's trash, and leans into that big time. That's why it's fun.

Yeah, I'm curious to see how it changes with Netflix producing. No awkward commercial breaks, obviously, but I wonder if they introduce nudity or not, change up the writing staff, etc. Will be interesting to see.

Super predictable, but not that far away from real life unfortunately.

wondered that too. It feels like the type of show that would do it. not like anyone who watches that show already would turn away because of it. And it would surely draw more people in.

somewhat related...I think they killed Peach way too quickly. the Asian girl should have been the friend that died. Peach was a really good antagonist and character. And honestly could have been the main point moving forward. They could have even had her kinda fall for him after Beck died. also...she is super hot.

Sorry...although I didn't think was necessary for a show that's released all at once. I wouldn't read threads on those shows until you're done.

But my bad.

In any other instance I wouldn't complain about spoilers - the unwritten rule is that we usually use spoiler tags opening weekend of a streaming show and then after that it's fair game - but man, I literally said I was on episode six in my previous post and you replied directly to my next post with the spoiler to end all spoilers. I read it before before I could even move on to episode seven. Kind of a sh*tty thing to do. But it's fine, I guess - the finale technically/originally aired weeks ago, so it's ultimately on me.

That, and I've since finished the season, and since we're not using spoiler tags, I'll pose the question to the thread... [SPOILER WARNING JUST IN CASE]... there's no way Beck's really dead, right? If only because they showed every death throughout the season but hers, or there was a body certain characters actually saw (in the case of Peach, I'm assuming). So If Beck IS alive, the question then becomes, is she in on it, does Joe have her locked up again somewhere, or what? All I know is that we didn't see her die, and the way they cut felt very purposeful. Then after that we were shown *a* body wrapped up in the trunk and the authorities finding *something* buried in the ground. But we never saw Beck's actual death or body.

Either way, I thought the season ended a lot stronger than it began. I really enjoyed the way everything came together in the last few episodes, and especially in the finale. The overall conceit is still pretty ridiculous, and the stuff with the old man bookstore owner never quite worked for me, but I liked how it came full circle with Joe doing the same to Beck by locking her in the glass book room thing as well. Their whole back and forth there was great, and super tense, trying to break each other down. All the Stamos/therapist stuff was good too, with the games being played there, and how those scenes were cut. That was all really clever and well executed.

Anyway, for me at least, the show went from campy fun and addictive to something genuinely good by the end, and I'm now even more excited for season two, if only to see how they handle the whole Beck thing.

I think Beck is dead but we will actually see her like we did Candace throughout season 2. At least I'm hoping so.
TCTTS

Speaking of - is Candice really dead? Or did Joe just kill the record label producer? It appeared as if Candice actually did change her name and move to Italy. But the way she appeared at the book store in the end did have more of a dream-like quality to it, so maybe it was just another hallucination.
k20dub
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
That's a good question, I don't think we will know the answer until the second season. They never went into full details on what happened with Candace. When she appeared at the very end, I was confused. Almost would've been better if Beck walked into the store at the end, signaling she was going to appear in Season 2 the way we saw Candace.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I'll say this... the writers did a hell of a job keeping us guessing going into season two. Beck and Candice could both be dead or could both be alive. Heck, even Peach could technically come back, I guess (though that would be pretty ridiculous, even for this show).

I thought the Candace/Italy Instagram was something Joe created. I assumed it would reveal that but it never did.

My interpretation was that Beck really died, but I could see your scenario happening as well.

One thing odd to me was that after Joe killed Benji, we never heard about Benji again until Peach brought it up that Joe was wearing his watch. You would think that Beck would've mentioned something about him missing or being killed.
