Stoked for all of this. And Shannon Tindle recently did the Ultraman anime for Netflix, also originally developed Kubo and the Two Strings for Laika, he should do a great job with it.

Edit: updated with the tweet

4 Beatles films?
3 too many.
I'm 51 & think the Beatles are great, but dated. Everyone who saw them live & lived through Beatlemania is in their 70's at this point. Good luck getting the masses out for all of these.

Also, I sure as heck hope Heat 2 doesn't mimic "A Way of Water" in any way but ticket sales. That bloated stupid dumbass plot movie sucked big time. Cameron is making great money & some beautiful eye candy... and wasting away talent in his twilight years on movies no one will care about in the future. Bah.

Don't like Keanu returning for John Wick 5. Number 4 was a great final send off for him. It was the most beautifully shot action movie I've ever seen. I wish that "Hollywood", as a general collective group, would learn when to stop "going to the well" and move on. Move on to the spin-off characters, like they're doing. But let the John Wick character rest in peace on a high note, don't end the series by beating that horse to death.

He's *clearly* talking about the event-element of The Way of Water, in that it was a massive blockbuster, and not the plot.

That said, The Way of Water is a phenomenal movie and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.

Oh, and those who lived through Beatlemania weren't the last generation to love their music, not by a long shot. Four interconnected movies releasing the same weekend is risky and unconventional, yes, but there will be an audience for sure.

Agreed. It was a perfect ending for the character.

Totally agree. I watched A Complete Unknown this weekend. And even though I wasn't a huge Dylan fan, I absolutely loved the movie. But would I want to watch three more Bob Dylan movies now? The second one told from the vantage point of his girlfriend, the third told from the vantage point of Joan Baez, and the fourth told from the vantage point of Pete Seeger?

Nope

But hey, i'm not a beatles fanatic, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Totally get that, but I also love this world and these characters so I'm excited to see more.

Either way I love the concept behind the anime, seeing the Impossible Task has the potential to be a fantastic story. The Caine movie could be really good too, Donnie Yen is 61 and still incredible on screen.

Exhibit A of my John Wick fandom, original concept art for the John Wick 2 poster.

Graphics aside, as the kids say these days, it was "mid", and about 45 minutes too long of mid at that.
I hope the next one is a tighter movie, with an original plot, with characters that don't make stupid decisions, and with new characters so cool that we actually remember their names. But, not to totally derail, that's the last I'll say about it on this thread.

Oh, I'm totally onboard to see more of Yen's character.

Interesting, there's the obvious thematic parallel with Last Crusade but this is also definitely going after some kinda retro/Indy vibes. I'll give it a watch with that cast and Guy Ritchie directing (and being that I have AppleTV+).

A little bit of "National Treasure" and "The DaVinci Code" as well.
Also "The Rise of Skywalker".
A fetch quest. Could be fun with Guy Ritchie and Natalie Portman is always nice to look at.

Yeah, as derivative as it seems, it still looks like a lot of fun. What's depressing is that, pre-pandemic, with this kind of talent, it would have almost assuredly been a big, theatrical release, yet now it's playing only on Apple TV+. When this is the perfect summer movie I would have loved to have caught in theaters on a random Tuesday in July.

Yup, thought National Treasure as well.

And also Eiza Gonzalez is…yeah.

I got more of a National Treasure/Tomb Raider vibe...... but the dialogue and acting in those short scenes felt so fake/forced. Not sure why but it just hit me wrong. I like the people in it generally and maybe it will be a great ride and won't matter.

Eiza Gonzalez?
WTF is that?
Time for a little research....

More research needed to verify these results. Need larger sample size.

It looks like a big ole pile of AI gobbely goop that should have a theatrical release. But I'm in! This looks fun!

Yeah very disappointed in now theatrical release. I've been on a pretty big downswing of movies getting me into a theater recently and this would definitely be one to get me in.

Movies since pandemic have not even recovered back to 2002 level. And considering how much more it costs to make them and to go to movies it is not changing any time soon.

2024 total domestic box office was $8.5B for 675 films the lowest total pre pandemic since 2001
2002 thru 2019 every year was at least $9B and was $11B+ from 2015-2019
2001 total domestic box office was $7.95B and that was only 420 films

2024 average gross $12.7M per film
2001 average gross $19.3M per film

I mentioned this in another thread recently, but finally, next week with Warfare, marks the beginning of a run where there's something at least I, personally, want to see in theaters damn near every weekend through all of fall, if not through the end of the entire year (depending on what ends up being scheduled where). A more consistent slate of big, box office swings begins this month as well, running all the way through August. Basically, this summer is going to be a ton of fun, with this month being a warm-up of sorts, and has all the ingredients to feel like the first normal summer in terms of quality and volume since 2019, pre-pandemic. In other words, I'd be shocked if you're still on a downswing four months from now.
