Howdy all,

A post from the other day got me thinking. What's the best "album 1, track 1" examples you can think of? Did any bands or musicians careers start off with such a bang that they could have stopped there and still been pretty successful or famous?

A few examples I thought of:

The Eagles - Take it Easy
Boston - More than a Feeling
Bruce Springsteen - Blinded by the Light

Obviously all those artists had a lot more in the tank, but that's about as good a start as you can have.

Can you all think of any other track 1, album 1 examples like that? I'm sure there are plenty.

Is this a different thing from one-hit-wonders? Plenty of them have one hit, and are able to parlay that into a career of festivals and nostalgia.

Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath"

The rain, the thunder, the church bell and then the RIFF. It set the stage for EVERYTHING metal to follow.

Track 1 of the first Beatles album released in the UK was "I saw her standing there."

Track 1 of the first Beatles album released by Capitol in the US was "I want to hold your hand."

This band is underrated imo, and kinda wussed out in later years, but they were HUGE in the day. Their first album is great, and starts with...

Foreigner - Long Way From Home

First track that comes to mind is More Than A Feeling. All of Scholz' technical wizardry and Delp's soaring vocals on display from the very first song on the album. I can't think of anything else that hits the OP criteria better.

Elvis doesn't really count, IMO. His career began by releasing singles.

The op specifically said track one of first album. Technically, many mentioned on this thread wouldn't count if we're going be singles. Hendrix released Hey Joe before any released album. That was the song that "began" his career.

Amazingly, Appetite was released in July 1987 and a month later cracked the Billboard top 200 at 182. No one was buying this album. It took a full year for it to hit #1 in August 1988.

I don't know squat about the music industry but it seems like typically an album gets fans which leads to touring. These yahoos put out an album know one wanted then went out of tour and gained their fanbase (outside SoCal).

I guess I'm going with the spirit of the law instead of the letter of the law.

My initial response was going to be Jennifer Love Hewitt.

I read the Op the first time as "best rack to open a career".

Kind of cheating on the answer a bit, but Alanis's first international album was jagged little pill, and the first single was 'you oughta know", which kind of redefined what rock from a woman could be.

The first track on Jagged Little Pill is "All I Really Want" which is still a great "first song on debut album". It really sets the theme / mood for the whole album.

The woman who really redefined what rock from a woman could be is Joan Jett. Track 1 from her solo debut in 1980 was "Bad Reputation".

Great female artists, definitely. But women couldn't be taken seriously as hard punk rockers until Jett.

Maroon 5 - Harder to Breathe

Now, before you scoff, hear me out. In 2003, I went to see Guster in a small venue here in Seattle, with maybe 300 people, and Maroon 5 opened. No one had ever heard of them. They started with HtB, and continued the high energy from there. By the end of their set, I think the whole place were fans. They worked pretty hard touring like that to build their visibility, which eventually paid off.

I agree musically JJ opened some doors, but when I wrote that I was thinking lyrically.

There had never been a more honest, emotionally vulnerable introspective album to that point, from a strong female POV. Women didn't have to copy men to succeed in rock after that. They could be feminine, tell feminine stories and sell records.

The entire first side of The Pretenders first album is about as good an introduction a band can make. And speaking of true rock women, Chrissie Hynde says "hello".
