"Welcome to the Jungle".

Amazingly, Appetite was released in July 1987 and a month later cracked the Billboard top 200 at 182. No one was buying this album. It took a full year for it to hit #1 in August 1988.

I don't know squat about the music industry but it seems like typically an album gets fans which leads to touring. These yahoos put out an album know one wanted then went out of tour and gained their fanbase (outside SoCal).

The reason this album's sales went the way you described is due to four simple words - "Sweet Child 'O Mine". It was the third (I think) single from that record, and it wasn't released until the summer of '88. That's when things exploded for them.

Ironically, the same thing happened with Def Leppard over those same 12 months. The 'Hysteria' record was released in August of 1987 and had just moderate success after the first 3 single releases. Then, in the summer of '88, they released 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' and everything exploded.

That was a great summer - seemed like you couldn't go 15 minutes on radio or MTV without hearing those two songs.

Head like a hole has to be up there.

Pretty Hate Machine as a whole is one of the best debut albums ever.

I've got to admit, the first version of the Welcome to the Jungle music video I saw was directed by Liam Neeson and had Jim Carrey as the lead singer.

1988 was good (and eclectic) year.

Looks like Dirty Diana was #1 the week I was born. My favorite MJ song.

I believe the same thing happened for Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby was originally a b-side.
