Bob Dylan, great songwriter but truly painful to hear him sing in the past 20+ years.

Surprised no one has said Dave Mustaine

Since shortly after I first signed up (Blocker computer lab, early Spring 1999), I have consistently demonstrated a very high competency of Bob Dylan knowledge, including detailed album reviews, career retrospectives, and proposed alternative track listings (including very little known songs, some not yet released in the Bootleg Series).

Wilco/Jeff Tweedy is an acquired taste for sure.

And somehow you know the least about him.

He sucks.

His voice is perfectly fitting for his song Not Dark Yet

Oh man. I can't think of another band with that much success with that bad of a lead singer. If he would have stuck with the guitar and hired a singer, I might actually like Megadeth.

I like Johnny Cash and he sounds great on the stuff from his hey day. But he sounded horrible on the entire American Series. I know people love his cover of Hurt but it is unlistenable to me.

I love this song, but the lead singers voice is just awful

Slow down. He was still Cash on the first two of those albums. After that is when he really started getting sick and Rick Rubin squeezed as many more albums out of Johnny as he could while his voice was quickly declining.

This thread pains me - so many of my favorite bands and their singers have been hit!

I like Midnight Oil and always wondered how much better they could be if Peter Garrett had a better voice. He's a great front man but his voice pretty much blows.

For some bizarre reason, they played a frat party I went to when I was at UF. They actually put on a decent show. You see a lot more close up, pretty good band, and I don't recall hating the singer.

His dancing alone makes him great.

Midnight Oil is not what I think of when I think "frat party gig".

There are plenty of bands I like but the lead singers are pretty terrible...

REM
Counting Crows
Cake, is he really singing or just talking.
KISS

all those whisper bands EMF, Jesus Jones, Wallflowers, Post Malone etc.

I like them, not sure why though.

Who am I missing?

Lol. Those voices are what make them unique. Minus kiss.

I'm not very familiar with Big Audio Dynamite, but Mick Jones has a pretty bad voice. I still love The Clash though.

You have to separate a "bad voice" with a voice that actually made the band's sound unique.

Does Michael Stipe or Billy Corgan or even Adam Duritz have what would normally be considered a great singing voice? No -- but some perfectly toned voice singing those band's songs probably wouldn't have made them as popular.

It's like judging the quality of a pitcher on his fastball alone.

And now to the stage "Steve Winwood and his Smashing Pumpkins".

Would love to here Steve's voice to "Bullet with Butterfly Wings"

The world is full of great singers and grest musicians we have never heard of.

Having a unique sound like Stipe, Corgan, Vedder, Duritz, etc., is what made them take that next step from a band in a bar to a band in arenas and stadiums.

I usually prefer singers with a non tradiational singing voice.

Van Halen with David Lee Roth. Even when he was young that guy sucked. That is why I actually liked Van Halen with Sammy. At least Sammy can carry a tune. DLR makes me cringe.

True, and that DLR fronted VH didn't really produce very many good songs either.

Well, wait. Turns out I was wrong. According to Wiki.... Van Halen is one of five rock bands that have had two albums (Van Halen and 1984) sell more than ten million copies in the US.

VH wrote and made some great music with DLR. He's just not a good singer.

Username checks out. Ragoo is one of my favorite KOL songs behind Talihina Sky and Trani. There early shows were so much fun.

Milk
The bucket

DLR era Van Halen was helped tremendously by the bass player's (whose name escapes me at the moment) harmonizing vocals. Helped create a unique sound for the band without DLR having a great voice of his own.
