Van Halen with David Lee Roth. Even when he was young that guy sucked. That is why I actually liked Van Halen with Sammy. At least Sammy can carry a tune. DLR makes me cringe.

DLR era Van Halen was helped tremendously by the bass player's (whose name escapes me at the moment) harmonizing vocals. Helped create a unique sound for the band without DLR having a great voice of his own.
Michael Anthony. I love Van Halen with Roth, the sound of the music, the intensity. I just came to realize that DLR was horrid and still is. When I heard them with Sammy on 5150, wow. When I saw them the first time and Sammy was doing panama and other songs, I was like this is how they should have always sounded.

It is a shame that EVH is such as butthole. He can still play and Sammy can still sing, they could still be making good music.

Didn't realize that Eddie chipped in on the harmony vocals too.

That's a neat concept for a YouTube series, I watched the Soundgarden one too, kind of opposite of the premise for this thread.

I personally feel that Mick Jones was the brains behind the Clash. Sure, Joe Strummer sung the songs, but Mick Jones added something to the band that when he was kicked out had a significant effect on the quality of The Clash. Cut the Crap I believe was The Clash minus Mick Jones and that album sucked.

I've watched several of them as well. The way he isolates the individual tracks and breaks them down is really interesting.

Surprised to see this get to p4 without Dave Matthews.

While I dont think he's a bad singer, I know many who absolutely hate his voice.

Jonsi from Sigur Ros.

My favorite band but every time I try to show them to friends, they can't stand his voice. Definitely an acquired taste.

Maybe it belongs in a different thread, but I file him under the category of "cartoon voice" singers. It doesn't sound necessarily bad, but it seems like they are forcing a style into their vocals that isn't natural.

It's like all of the British singers that sound like a cockney drunk when they speak, but when they sing they enunciate like they're from Alabama.

I'll throw James Hetfield's name into the mix. Dude has always made me wonder how terrible Kirk Hammet's and Lars Ulrich's voices are if he's the one that got the job.

How in the world would you expect Lars to be able to sing while playing drums in a thrash band?

I'll throw in shane McGowan from the Pogues. Love the band and Shane M, but he doesn't have your classic good voice.

Oddly enough i enjoy his recent (since say, 2000) singing more than his Zep singing. The album with Alison Krauss was really good.

Well, Kirk wasn't in the original lineup, it was Dave Mustaine. So...

Add Gwen Stefani in for good measure. She is capable of singing well. She just usually doesn't.

Most female singers are pretty good. Tough to front a band of guys if you can't sing.

Don't know that the problem with DLR is the albums - it was live. Don't know that I've ever been more disappointed in a singer live. Saw him on the Skyscraper tour back in '90(?). For some reason, he can't sing close to the same timing of the recordings - it's like he's out of breath the whole time.

While I appreciate energy on the stage - I want to hear music that I can at least relate to what I've heard before. On VH Albums - DLR is 9/10. Live DLR is 2/10.

BTW - love that guys youtube videos. He goes the gambit of 70s, 80s, 90s. Loved the Tool and Queen ones especially.

True that. Cutting edge music usually requires cutting edge vocals. What she did worked for the band.

They were kind of knock off ska with enough pop to go mainstream. I feel like they were the middle of that horrible ska/punk/swing music era in the mid 90s but maybe they were bleeding/leading edge.

I always thought Joe strummers rock the casbah and biz markies just a friend were extra fun songs partly because of how badly they were sung. It made them fun to sing along with.

The winner has to be milli vanilli tho.
