I am pretty laissez faire when it comes to spoilers. In fact there are quite a few movies I saw because of spoilers such as Shutter Island. What is your take on spoilers? Me personally I could give a **** but will obviously update a post if someone asks me. I have definitely seen more movies because of spoilers (the journey is more important than the destination, imo) than not.

Completely opposite... I like letting the film tell me the story.

I don't even like people telling me 'the ending has a great twist' because then I'll spend the movie trying to figure out the twist rather than just watching the movie (guess sixth sense minutes in because of this).

Given that I know it's not normal and try to avoid any references to it...it works, I successfully avoided Infinity War details until it came out on Video.

Depends on the movie, but knowing Bruce Willis was already dead in that one movie affected my viewing of it negatively.

Agreed. Another example is knowing the twist in The Others.

Plot twists are designed to induce a certain type of emotional and or intellectual reaction. Knowing the twist before hand totally negates the potential for that experience.

Movies like the Matrix will always be good, but they will never be as good as when you experienced it the first time not knowing the twist, like what the matrix was.

supposedly at least one study showed that people's enjoyment of movies generally increased after being told a spoiler. i have a hard time buying that.

You only get to experience meeting Keyser Soze once, seeing what is in the box, knowing what it is like to be on a train station platform with Frank Underwood, or to know Rollo Tomassi . Those moments make you smile, squirm, or scream internally...they make you feel something.

I guess I could be pretty pissed off about the spoilers that happened to me but it's hard to stay mad when there's so much beauty in the world. You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry, you will someday.

The problem with that is, even if absolutely true, it only looks at it from a single viewing of a movie.

Any movie you love, you are most likely going to watch more than once in your life. Having a movie that you enjoyed spoiled before you saw it the first time only allows you one way to experience the movie. Whereas seeing it unspoiled allows you to experience the movie with the mystery or lack of knowledge of the ending, then once you know it, to go back and re experience the movie now knowing how it plays out and able to see many more things you missed the first time.

Movies like Memento, Donnie Darko, The Prestige, ect all offer so much more once you come back and watch it again and know what to look for. However, that doesn't mean that the first time experience wasn't also great.

For the Matrix alone, I know that personally, I could not have felt as awe struck coming out of that movie the first time I saw it, had I known what it was all about going in.

i agree. i hate to have things spoiled. i rarely watch the second and third trailers of a movie that i want to see to prevent too much from getting shown.

i also generally avoid too much reading of fan theories because with so many people pooling their analysis, it's very hard for creators to come up with something that people can't follow breadcrumbs to.

I have a similar opinion. I too choose the journey over destination (also life before death and strength before weakness)

Sometimes knowing the spoiler can enhance my enjoyment because I can sit back and relax and enjoy without being too anxious or trying to guess the twist. Or I can look for clues and foreshadowing in the movie that I'd probably miss without knowing the spoiler. It depends on my mood and the movie on which one I choose.

Also, the definition of a spoiler has expanded too far. I see people on here going off about any kind of information. The other day a co-worker was trying to avoid It:2 spoilers from another guy. I sarcastically said that they vanquish It at the end. He got mad about a very obvious and vague spoiler that anyone can see coming. Upcoming movie spoilers here: The movie fades to black and names start scrolling at the end.

The one thing that bugs me about spoiler culture is that it puts plot above all else, when it can be just as exciting to watch something knowing WHAT happens, but not knowing HOW it happens, if that makes sense. In other words, the anticipation of the directorial translation, performances, delivery, editing, music, etc can be just as fulfilling as the anticipation of the development of the plot itself. I've read countless scripts before seeing the movies themselves and sometimes it makes it even MORE fun to see how it's all going to come together or how the director chose to envision something vs how I envisioned it. Kind of the same as reading the book before watching the adaptation.

That said, I'm obviously not at all for spoiling twists or endings or anything like that, and I can absolutely appreciate wanting to go into a movie as fresh as humanly possible. I'm not saying anyone is wrong for wanting that. I guess I just wish people wouldn't treat plot as THE end all, be all, most important element of filmmaking, when you can be just as "surprised" by other elements as well.

What if someone told you the main plot points and spoilers before you read those scripts? For me there is a difference between watching a movie for enjoyment, and critically watching it to appreciate choices made by the actors and directors. For the former, I'll be extremely pissed if you tell me anything that happens beforehand.

There are obviously different kinds of spoilers and different levels of spoiler delivery. Again, I'm not at all advocating for just farting out a bunch of plot points to someone and then telling them to deal with it.

Depends on the movie for me.

If it is 1980 and you tell me that the airplane won't actually crash in Airplane!, I probably already figured that part out for myself.

If you come to me and say that, in The Rise of Skywalker, it is revealed that Rey is actually a clone of Padme Amidala (ridiculous statement here, just making a point), then I'm going to be ticked.

I'll put it this way. Going into The Force Awakens, I knew Han died in the end. I just had no idea HOW he died, so there was still a level of anticipation for me. And it almost made it even more poignant, having the knowledge from the outset that he wasn't going to make it. So knowing that plot point didn't really bother me, personally, because there was still a big question mark attached to it. Now, had someone told me, "Kylo is Han's son and he defiantly stabs Han with his lightsaber in a heart-wrenching scene toward the end," yeah, I probably would have been pretty upset. But that's what I mean by level of spoilers, and I wish people in general had more nuanced reactions to the various levels, and tried to find the anticipation where they still can, instead of going full spoiler Nazi. That doesn't mean I don't think the person doing the spoiling isn't a straight up assh*le, or that being spoiled like that doesn't warrant being pissed. It's just that so many people act like knowing the color of a character's shirt in the second scene of the movie is the equivalent of losing their virginity after having taken a purity pledge. Spoiler culture is out of control in that regard, especially when the people who seem to be doing the most complaining voluntarily come to a place like this and then want everyone to bend to their definition of what a spoiler is.

(And for anyone thinking that I'm aiming this a Spilner, I'm not. I've tried to get better at not openly discussing/posting what I consider to be innocuous plot points, while Spilner seems to have taken his guard down a bit as well).

I can't define it either. It evens depends on the spoiler for me. Endgame for example: if you told me Cap picks up Mjolnir I would have thought that was awesome and seen the movie just because of that moment (It's an example, I was going to see Endgame anyways, and years of comics lead up to that) ; however telling me about Iron Man's ending would have been too much of a spoiler (even if it had been foreshadowed for a few movies). I might have even been OK with the knowledge about Iron Man, but the specifics of how/when/why would have been too much.

Depends on the movie, and how important the reveal is to the experience. As others said, movies like the Sixth Sense or Usual Suspects are different experiences once you see the ending. You only get that experience once.

For action/adventures, I really don't care about spoilers, I just enjoy seeing how it's done and how well the movie is made.

For Star Wars, which I've been following my whole life, I'm absolutely shameless. Looking for spoilers, rumors, and speculation on the internet has been a tradition since 1998 or so.

But Star Wars was always different for me, because it was so big, even as a kid pre-internet we learned a lot from the marketing, novelizations, etc. before ever going into the theater.

Don't do it. Inconsiderate and very bad form.

I always like finding out what will happen before I see it. I might be different, but when Endgame started, I could not wait to read the spoilers. When my wife and I are watching movies, I will get busted reading wikipedia on the movie before it is over.

This is so bizarre to me. One of my closest friends is like this... they literally cant stand not knowing what's going to happen and will read anything spoiler wise about a movie, tv show, reality show, whatever... I try to understand but I just do not get it.

I read a lot of spoilers because I don't actually watch a lot of what's out there. Prime example - I didn't watch Game of Thrones, but I was invested in the story from reading the first three books (books 4 and 5 cooled that interest) so I read episode spoilers.

Generally, I'm happy to spoil movies or books for myself, but I am not a fan of someone else deciding to spoil something for me.
