So, I finished the 9th book earlier this year and go to get the next one thinking surely the 10th is the conclusion. Nope. I see 12th is about to come out?? How many books are going to be in this series and how long does it take Uhtred to get back his home?! Good lord.

No clue on the books, but I'm assuming you're aware that Netflix has turned this into a series?

I am, but haven't watched it yet. I had it in my head that I would finish the novels before starting the show but I'm not sure he's ever going to finish the novels!

At least he's still writing the series, not stuffing his fat face and screaming at fans for asking about the next novel, or whining that he is too oppressed by Trump to write line some fantasy authors.

Who hurt you? Rothfuss or Martin? I've given up on both

Your cure is a man named Brandon Sanderson. That man is a writing machine. He consistently releases 2 books or 1 long novel every year.

I assume that is Martin. I've actually never finished his novels that are out with GoT because he's taken so long. Like Robert Jordan all over again.

Martin and Rothfuss, respectively. I'm done with both of them.

I can at least respect Scott Lynch. He's got real problems that have kept him from writing, but he is pretty honest about them, and he's still working on his books and not just making excuses.

I love Brandon Sanderson. He is both prolific and amazing. One day, people are going to realize that he is the modern Tolkien.

I thought Rothfuss was overrated. Never understood deal with that book. It was ok.

Still trying to get into Sanderson. I've read Elantris and first two Mistborn and thought they were ok. Actually, Elantris wasn't that good. I keep having people tell me to keep at it because his later books get great.

I did read The Emperor's Soul which is a novella in Elantris world and it was really good. It was also written after above.

Agreed. When it's all said and done, he will be the most influential fantasy author in a long time if he keeps this up.

Mistborn wasn't bad. The Wax and Wane series that follows is entertaining. The Stormlifght Archive is by far his best work imo. It is next level good

Going back to OP, Cornwell writes LONG series. His most famous, the Sharpe series, has 21 books. . So it may be awhile.

What is going on with Scott Lynch? I just read his books this summer and wondered where the next one was.

So is the Saxon series with a read. I sometimes get tired of lond series books. Had to put down Web Griffon but do enjoy Cromwell

He has some pretty serious anxiety and mental health issues that he has been battling for years. He seems to be doing better now though.

Stormlight is amazing. Legion was good. Skyward was also awesome.

It is, but I will say it kind of repeats itself in that there are only so many Viking invaders and battles before it starts all running together after several books. I've lost track of some of the characters from earlier books not that it matters all that much.

I was browsing on Audible a couple months ago and stumbled across a listing to pre-order the new book. Did it immediately. I love this series (and his Sharpe series).

Luckily, I was recommended to Sanderson's Stormlight Archive first. It is fantastic. You shouldn't hesitate to get into it.

After I finished Stormlight, I read Mistborn. I thought the first book was good, but I'll be honest, I think the second book dragged (WAY too much talk and talk about Ellend making a proposal to the council about this, and a proposal to the council about that). I thought the third book was a strong finish. But, like someone else said, I thought the Wax and Wayne series (the Mistborn sequel series) was fantastic. I'm disappointed there'll only be one more book in that series.

I read Elantris in between Mistborn and Wax and Wayne. I had to force myself to finish that one.

I love the idea of Sanderson's huge, overarching and interconnected multiverse but I just can't get into him because the prose and dialogue (especially) always stops me dead in my tracks. It can be rough and when he tries to do humor it's often cringe inducing.

I'll probably power through at some point because the plotting and worldbuilding really are fantastic and I've heard Wax and Wayne show improvement in some of his weaker areas.

which would make sense, because Elantris is his first book out of all of those. It stands to reason you would improve as a writer the more you create.

True. And, no disrespect intended to Sanderson, but if after listening to Elantirs you would've asked me whether its author was capable of something like Stormlight Archive or Wax and Wayne, I'd have said "No". It's a pretty significant level of improvement.

Actually both Martin & Jordan proved that you can get worse the more you write!

I listened to book 1 on Audible about a year ago - holy smokes! One of the best narrations I've ever heard. It's like they went and found Uhtred to read the damn thing.

Looking forward to season four of Last Kingdom which is taken from the Saxon series.

Y'all should definitely read Cornwall's Richard Sharpe novels ( Sharpe's Rifles, Sharpe's Eagle, [etc.). Read them all. Damn good and you become a Napoleonic War buff toot sweet.

Y'all may also enjoy Jack Whyte's Skystone series.

It's historical fiction in England at the time of Rome's retreat from Britannia and explores the origins of Arthurian tales.

Very good; very educational.

I read this last book about half with Audible and half without. I just couldn't get into the Audible for this but I don't think I've adjusted to that form of reading overall yet, though.

I was just thinking about the Skystine books this morning. After I finish The Black Prism series I need to go back and reread Skystone.

Check who the narrator is. I think the same guy did books 1-3 but then they tried to change things up for some reason and I heard no one was nearly as good as the first.

This is going to be old news to most of you, but if yall are into historical fiction, you absolutely have to read the Aubrey/Maturin books by Patrick O'Brian. They're the source material for the Master and Commander movie with Russell Crowe and they're probably my favorite series of all time.

The first book starts with the two main characters meeting, one a Royal Navy lieutenant who just got his first command and the other a renowned surgeon who's secretly an intelligence agent. O'Brian takes a lot of real events from the Napoleonic era and subs in his own characters, so while the adventure level is absurdly high for one ship's crew, the individual events themselves are rooted in reality.

There's 20 books, each is 10 chapters, approx 300 pages, and the writing is just incredible. You also get immersed in nautical terminology with little to no explanation and somehow end up understanding it. In book 1, you'll be like, "um, what's a jib?", and by book 5 or 6 you'll find yourself thinking, "wow, that's a strong crosswind. If the officer on deck doesn't strike topsails they're in danger of having a mast carried away."

I chalk Martin's issue up to the way his books took off and he for the first time ever had real pressure on continuing it at a high quality, and he's not handling it well. As for Rothfuss, I'm not sure it's ever coming out, but honestly, I'm probably fine with that.

Going back to OP's actual subject, I haven't read this particular series, but I thoroughly enjoyed Cromwell's Warlord Trilogy. Is this one similar in tone and structure? Might have to check it out.
