I chalk Martin's issue up to the way his books took off and he for the first time ever had real pressure on continuing it at a high quality, and he's not handling it well. As for Rothfuss, I'm not sure it's ever coming out, but honestly, I'm probably fine with that.

Going back to OP's actual subject, I haven't read this particular series, but I thoroughly enjoyed Cromwell's Warlord Trilogy. Is this one similar in tone and structure? Might have to check it out.
Warlord Chronicles were badass. One of my favorite trilogies and his best books IMO.

Saxon Stories are similar in that it's told from the POV of a fictional character in a historical setting. It's been a long time since I've read Warlord but I would say Saxon is similar but there is obviously less of the mystique and occult in Saxon vs Warlord. Saxon is more straight forward and less complex I would say.

The Warlord Chronicles are really good. One of those series that, as I neared the end of the third book, I found myself disappointed that it was almost over. A lot of similarities to Saxon Stories, though I'd say that while Saxon Stories is straight historical fiction, Warlord Chronicles wanders just a bit in the direction of fantasy. But really good books however you classify the.

Warlord Chronicles were good. Since we've seemed to strayed to the subject of Arthurian literature, has anyone else read Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle? I really enjoyed them.

Yes, they were good. I think I quit once they went to present day. Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles are the best "real world" telling of Authurian legend not that there are that many version of that.

There was only one book that brought it into modern times, I think. I enjoyed it as an interesting end to the series. If you haven't read Byzantium and Patrick by Lawhead, you should. They are great one off books.

Another book I really enjoyed is Rhinegold by Stephan Grundy. It is an awesome telling of the Siegfried legend.

I read those. I don't remember them though. Will check out Grundy. Not familiar with him.

do we need a historical fiction thread?

Wilbur Smith has some okay stuff based in Africa

I think I've read and enjoyed everything by James Clavell (some of those books need updated movies) regarding Asia.

Grundy gets really deep into Norse mythology. You'll enjoy it.

Love Clavell. I reread Shogun every few years and I swear I get something new out of it every time. All his books are great but that one is outstanding.

Michael Arnold's Civil War Chronicles (Srtryker) series about the English Civil War is also outstanding. Very similar to Cornwall's Sharpe in tone and great history info.
