Then ozzy made another young unknown guitar player a superstar almost a decade later; Zakk Wlyde
He did the same for Jake E. Lee between the two.
I actually edited out 'too bad the same didn't happen for Jake e lee'
I'd hardly say Jake is on par with rhodes or wylde.
He was a huge deal when I was a kid. Still has a pretty big following.
'when I was a kid'.
Rhodes and Wylde are still huge deals 30+ years later. That's exactly what I'm trying to explain.. he didn't propel like RR and ZW to their guitar god status. Not even close.
His FB has 28k followers. Wylde has 1.6m. Random RR fan page I found has 120k followers, and he's been dead for almost 40 years.
I've been a metal/rock guitar player since mid 90s, and looked through probably every guitar world and rolling stone magazine during that era.. never saw J.E.L. The others have multiple appearances.
Zakk is obviously a much bigger presence because he is still active and making new music & touring all the time.
And maybe that's the difference. If ZW was with Ozzy for 3-4 albums up until late 90s then dropped off, he may not be remembered as much.. but he formed BLS (and remained active with Ozzy) and that has kept him very visible for the 20 years since then... again, that was kinda my point. he's a guitar god (and Rhodes), JEL is not, plain and simple.
A few more ozzy launches: An unknown Mike Inez who ended up in and still with AIC, and Rob Trujillo, now in Metallica. (Though he was relatively known being with Suicidal.)
Crazily enough, as soon as Trujillo leaves ozzy and joins Metallica (which was insisted upon by ozzy himself), Jason Newstead ends up playing live with Ozzy.
