is battling Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Not a huge QR fan but they did expose the world to Randy Rhoads.

"Since April 17th I have been battling stage four pancreatic cancer," he said. "The original prognosis was very scary. I had quite a battle on my hands and it took a lot, but I am thankful to say that after several rounds of chemo and other treatments I am on the mend."

The classic QR lineup was bad ass. Metal Health is an all time classic. Kevin DuBrow was a very underrated singer.

I had totally forgotten that DuBrow died in 2007 until just now. I wore out the Metal Health cassette I played it so much as a kid.

The QR albums that randy played on (first two) were only released in Japan.. nowhere else. I'm thinking very few people had heard of him until blizzard of ozz in 1980.

If he was not performing. I doubt Ozzy/Sharon or whoever would have ever heard of him.

Ozzy/sharon had never heard of him until the day he rehearsed. It was Randy's LA friend (and future member of Slaughter) that recommended Randy to ozzy.

Well of course he didn't teach them how to play but without Ozzy we might not know any of those names. Say what you want but I know some incredible guitar players that have been unable to make a living playing music.

Had a weird moment a few years ago as I was walking through the room and noted some dude on one of the Real Housewives shows looked a lot like old lead singer of QR.

Wife: it's his brother.
Me: wut?

He's a plastic surgeon. Has a show called Botched. Saw it at my sister's and caught the name so I looked it up.

I actually edited out 'too bad the same didn't happen for Jake e lee'

I'd hardly say Jake is on par with rhodes or wylde.

I just looked at him and saw 'dr dubrow' and immediately figured he was related. Looks just like Kevin.

One episode he talked about him.

He was a huge deal when I was a kid. Still has a pretty big following.

'when I was a kid'.
Rhodes and Wylde are still huge deals 30+ years later. That's exactly what I'm trying to explain.. he didn't propel like RR and ZW to their guitar god status. Not even close.

His FB has 28k followers. Wylde has 1.6m. Random RR fan page I found has 120k followers, and he's been dead for almost 40 years.

I've been a metal/rock guitar player since mid 90s, and looked through probably every guitar world and rolling stone magazine during that era.. never saw J.E.L. The others have multiple appearances.

I love Randy Rhoads but I can't really remember the last time I heard anyone mention his name. I don't think his current status is anywhere near what you think it is. And I have a much different recollection of Jake E's standing at the time. I used to read all the rock mags, and there were about 5-6 at least, all the time. He was a superstar in that world. But that was in the 80's. His band Badlands after he left Ozzy had a killer debut album but never hit it big. Zakk is obviously a much bigger presence because he is still active and making new music & touring all the time.

And maybe that's the difference. If ZW was with Ozzy for 3-4 albums up until late 90s then dropped off, he may not be remembered as much.. but he formed BLS (and remained active with Ozzy) and that has kept him very visible for the 20 years since then... again, that was kinda my point. he's a guitar god (and Rhodes), JEL is not, plain and simple.

A few more ozzy launches: An unknown Mike Inez who ended up in and still with AIC, and Rob Trujillo, now in Metallica. (Though he was relatively known being with Suicidal.)

Crazily enough, as soon as Trujillo leaves ozzy and joins Metallica (which was insisted upon by ozzy himself), Jason Newstead ends up playing live with Ozzy.

I get what you're saying but Zakk's first non-Ozzy release, Pride & Glory, didn't amount to anything. I love the album but it wasn't a hit. Jake pretty much stopped playing music for a long time which led to him falling from the public eye whereas Zakk formed BLS and continued to release music & tour slowly building up a big fan base. That doesn't mean Jake E. Lee was not a guitar god in his day. He absolutely was.

Jake E. Lee was definitely a guitar god in the 80's and was on the cover of a lot of guitar magazines due in large part to Bark at the Moon, The Ultimate Sin, and the first Badlands album. In my opinion he has a unique style which I personally love, especially his work with Bandlands. It's a shame he disappeared from music for so long. I thought the first Red Dragon Cartel album was ok, but would have been better without switching singers for every song.

Full disclosure (well.. I already disclosed it), I was playing guitar (and by extension, perusing guitar magazines) in early/mid 90s.. Apparently JELs stardom was heavy in the 80s.

As junkhead already said 'When I was a kid'.

Point taken.. yeh ok he was big at the time (I would hope so, playing on a few platinum ozzy records).. end of the day, it didn't turn into a hugely successful lifelong career like it did for ZW, which was all I was trying to say.

And Randy Rhodes is pretty much a guitar legend. I mean he had a guitar design named after him.. while he was still alive at that. And lots of modern guitarist play on a Rhoads.

Randy Rhoads is absolutely a legend, no question about it. I just think his influence is fading as the years go by, which is completely understandable given the circumstances.

Talk about the 7x Platinum lineup with Carlos Cavazo on guitar and the rest of the thread is about RR and Jake E Lee. At least we got a guitar magazine cover with George Lynch on it.

I did get to meet Frankie once. But, I've met just about every living member of Quiet Riot. Spent lots of time with Carlos. Genuinely cool guy. Smokes a little too much herb for my tastes but I still like him anyway.

The lyrics to Crazy Train are crazy relevant today. The music is very 80s rock, but ..... what a great song.

Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
Maybe it's not too late
To learn how to love and forget how to hate
Mental wounds not healing
Life's a bitter shame
(Chorus)
I've listened to preachers, I've listened to fools
I've watched all the dropouts who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you live the role
(Chorus)
Heirs of a cold war, that's what we've become
Inheriting troubles, I'm mentally numb
Crazy, I just cannot bear
I'm living with something that just isn't fair
Mental wounds stop healing
Who and what's to blame
Etc.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that there is so little video of him playing. Might be like 45 minutes total.

Frankie did not make it, he passed away earlier today...

Heard stories he was one of the nicest people in the business.
