I'm on the opposite side of the Sturgill scale. I still have never even heard his first two albums. I listened to Sailor's Guide a few times when the Grammy nomination hit, but didn't stick with me. Bought Sound & Fury on a whim vinyl preorder and LOVE it. Since picked up Sailor's Guide on vinyl and have dug into it too. Slowly making my way backwards though his catalog.

As for Childer's I've listened to Country Squire a couple times but hasn't grabbed me. He has a nice voice, but musically and lyrically nothing jumps out at me, other than the appeal that he's one of the only ones making that style right now.

you definitely need to listen to Childers Purgatory album and Live at Red barn.

you havent listened to anywhere close to his best stuff.

His newer stuff is good, just different styles of music that just aren't my style. Which is why I appreciate him acknowledging that it isn't country music. So if you're talented enough to make good music in two types of genres, go for it. I just get annoyed with some of these pop country guys/gals saying what they make is traditional country. It's not necessarily bad music, but it certainly isn't country. I could rant about that for a while though

If you really want to go down a rabbit hole, check out Tyler Childers on Youtube. He has some good songs that have never seen an album.

So Sturgill is playing 4 dates in the UK in January. From what I can tell, these are much smaller venues. I'm trying to talk a buddy into London or Manchester. Any of them would be cool, and I've been trying to go to the UK for a while. I think that would be an amazing experience to see him over there.

I saw this yesterday and decided to book a trip to the London show. Thanks for the inspiration. Flight and Sturgill ticket are purchased. Actually a much cheaper ticket, only $45.

I got a great deal ($400) with TAP going out of JFK with a connection in Lisbon. Actually going to do a stopover for a night there on the way back.

I saw Sturgill at White Oak in Houston a few years ago and it was one of the more disappointing shows I've been to. He played a few songs off his first two albums and then played A Sailer's Guide to Earth track by track and that was it. No encore or anything. I was hoping for a lot more off of Hight Top Mountain and Metamodern Sounds. Sailer's guide and his newest album just don't do it for me. He's no doubt a talented artist, and he's free to make whatever kind of music he wants, I just hope he makes country music again at some point.

I saw Tyler Childers at the same venue, except for inside instead of outside and it was one of the best concerts I've seen. I am huge fan of his since I saw him on youtube a few years before Purgatory came out (acknowledging how ******y I sound here) and he absolutely delivered. He and the opener also played a couple REK songs as well which I loved.
I was at that Sturgill show at WOMH Lawn as well and i agree for the most part, i was a bit disappointed in it,

however a year or so after that he played at the new venue in Sugarland (Smart Financial Center) and crushed it, just him and 4 other guys on stage i believe, no fancy light rig, and they just rocked/jammed out to a mixture of songs from his albums, couple of covers, it was a fantastic show.

I think that also might have been right around the time they were still figuring out the noise ordinance issue with their outside shows. So that could have been a factor too.

Picked up tickets for the Austin show. So stoked. I've never seen either live but have been dying to get to a Childers concert for awhile.

Hot take: Sturgill has already had his 15 minutes and Tyler Childers is an average musician and singer but a very good songwriter that writes with authenticity about Appalachian culture.

Both are noteworthy and relevant in "country" music only because of the complete ****show that is Nashville country today.

Unless he played two shows at WOMH that year he played all off MetaModern before playing Sailors Guide. It was what he did for most shows that tour. It was a track by track, in order of both albums. I loved that show.

I also went to his show the next year at Smart Financial and it was great too just different set up. I don't know which show I liked better honestly. They were both great.

I've seen two shows there on the lawn, including recently as last weekend, and both weren't quite loud enough for my taste. I guess that's how it's gotta be.

If you're buying for Austin you have to go through the Erwin Center website.

Sugarland for me.

I live in Houston, and was going to travel to Austin...but the venue selection changed my mind.

the Sugarland venue is actually pretty cool. Better than a basketball arena for sure.

I had proposed this concert for a potential double date with my wife and a couple friends, but they all basically said "I want to see Sturgill, but not for that price."

So it looks like it's a solo show for me. The question now becomes do I buy a ticket now, or wait until the day o show and try to grab a potentially cheaper seat from someone looking to offload an extra.

which venue?

I think people hoping for cheaper tickets at Sugarland are wrong. Its not that big and they both have a huge fan base in Houston. It holds 6,400. I think that easily sells out.

then again..if you are going alone that could be a different story. Might be worth the wait

For Sugarland.

At the current prices I'm really just looking at the cheapest level, so I'll probably grab one today at the $50 level.

My friends girlfriend is friends with Sturgill's wife from school and her reply was "I wish I could get us a discount but she sent a Facebook blast a couple years ago basically asking people to stop asking her for hookups." lol

Glad I'm not the only one. Have a feeling this isn't going to go over like they want. The cavernous arena venues was a mistake. Should've gone for the mid-sized ones, with something like Sugarland's being the absolute biggest.
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Yeah this tour feels more like a Revention Center level show to me.

The other show I'm seeing in that same time frame is the Avett Brothers, who are playing Revention Center and tickets are $49.50 for General Admission. Avett Brothers have a pretty big following and seem like the same level to me.

For comparison:
Avett Brothers highest selling album - "I and Love and You" - 500,000+ Certified Gold
Sturgill's highest selling album - "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" - 228,600 copies sold

Of course the counterargument would be that Avett peaked with that album and have now settled into a fanbase, and that Sturgill and Tyler are both on the rise, but still...

Just as a reference point, I logged in right now for the public on sale for Sugarland. There was no queue, and here is the seat map.

If you're buying for sugar land, the top sections are very far from the stage. I would pay extra to be closer. Just my opinion. I sat in the top section before and watched the TV's the whole time.

But $100 a pop before fees? That's pretty damn steep

No thanks

I'll wait and peruse TA and craigslist and see if I can't snag some at a cheaper price.

Yeah..I get it. These are two of my favorite artist though. And I have two kids so I don't get out as much as I used to. So to sit 25 rows back for this show for 125 bucks seems super cheap to me to secure a good seat.

It's all relative I guess.

No doubt. And I don't blame anyone for paying it. I've paid that to see some shows.

I was just a bit disappointed to see prices that high.

the more I think about it, the more excited I am for this venue. I have seen childers 4 times in old country hall type places. Packed like sardines and standing up.

Really looking forward to just sitting in a comfy chair and enjoying.

Well, forget my enthusiastic OP, I am feeling the same. I can't justify the cost especially after seeing Tyler Childers at Gruene Hall and Stubbs. Frank Erwin center for this just doesn't seem enjoyable. Probably passing.
they definitely took the big venue route to the extreme on this one.

would have preferred Cynthia Woods type venues even if they needed a bigger place.

Even Denver..I was hoping to fly to go to Red Rocks but its in an arena too.

sucks.

FWIW I heard the Red Rocks show was kick ass.

I was able to grab floor seats at American Airlines Center during the first presale, saw they were $100, looked at lower bowl for $80 and thought for $20 more i'd grab floor seats, glad i did as floor is all sold out now at AAC

I'll admit I'm late to the Sturgill/Childers scene. We are gonna see them in Austin so We're getting familiar with their early work. (Currently jamming Metamodern)

I will say when I played Sturgills first four tracks of sound and fury, it was displeaseing. Thinking "Is this what I'm looking forward to March"

Hopefully, after listening to Sailers I'll ween into it

Been basically spinning Metamodern -> Sailor -> Sound & Fury in a loop all week. Making me want to go to the show, so I've been checking StubHub.

For the Sugarland show there are 196 tickets available in the PIT! That's got to be damn near the entire pit area on resale. Crazy.

Officially cancelled with no rescheduling. Boo!

I had a pit ticket to the Houston date and was really hoping it would be rescheduled..

One final kick in the nuts from Coronavirus. I'll keep my opinions about this pandemic and our reaction to myself...

I was going to go to the UK and see Sturgill play a small show at one of the coolest venues I've ever seen in Glasgow in early February. I ended up not doing it thinking I had too much going on at work, plus I already had tickets to the Dallas stadium show... I am so pissed off at myself now.
