I don't think he wanted you to hate anyone, imo.

A lot of critics and the media in general wanted to talk about this in the sense of class warfare and have and have nots.

I actually think it is meant to show that everyone will do what it takes to take care of their family, regardless of class status.

It also shows the inherent problems with the different class levels. Just because you are rich doesn't mean your life is better.

People want to make it some woke story about the different classes, but I think it's supposed to show how similar people are.

Yeah, I can't remember a field like this in years. Seems like every few days there's a new front runner. Love it.

I think this is the strongest field in years, which is both awesome and frustrating. I still want OUATIH to win, and it's looking like that may not happen, and I think it could've run away with it in most of the previous years. I would legit be ok with 3-4 of this year's noms winning and I definitely can't remember the last time that happened.

A fantastic year for movies... also Shape of Water will have won Best Picture, and two (possibly all three) out of 1917, OUATIH, and Parasite won't and that is a travesty (also Uncut Gems).

This was great. Wouldn't call it a Best Picture, but it definitely makes my top 10 of 2019.

Saw it last night and thought it was really well done. The first hour and 15 minutes had me locked in. The sisters intensity had me on edge. The last hour had me at times and lost me at times but it was strong overall.

I liked it, kinda feel like TCTS but honestly not sure if I could even explain why. Something just fizzled for me a little but I did really enjoy it.

Oldboy still may be my fave of the Korean thriller types.

Great movie! Makes you wonder if the grifting Kim family would have applied their cunning and intelligence to worthwhile pursuits how much further they could have gotten in life, but I guess that was kind of the point of the movie if they were going with the caste outlook here. In other words, you are doomed to certain levels in society regardless of potential.

But, I say that not really knowing anything about Korean society other than it's a westernized culture that loves to play video games.

I was so excited about This movie. I felt kind of let down. I acknowledge that it was very well filmed and acted. I just didn't like it.

I too felt a bit of a dropoff in the last 30 minutes or so. Couldn't really tell you why.

I think maybe I just enjoyed the ramping tension more than **** hitting the fan.

But the scene where they first go in the basement was pretty crazy. Did not know expect that at all. I had no idea where it was going, but I figured it would involve them getting caught or killing the Parks.

I saw it, found it engaging and interesting, didn't really grab ahold of me in any way - was hoping it was "special". It does seem to be for many others.

Maybe I'm being too harsh, I saw it last night and was thinking about some scenes/meanings earlier today so it stuck with me a bit.

i Just watched this movie, and I honestly don't understand why almost everyone but me apparently thinks it's so good. What did I miss?

The Parks were 100% the innocent victims in this story. They didn't know anything about the problems that the con artist family was dealing with. Why should they? The Parks thought these people were upstanding citizens doing okay in life, not poor people living in a dump.

The con artists got greedy and made stupid decisions, and they paid for it. Hardly an innovative theme.

I kept thinking the wife was faking being naive and was actually nuts and would end up being the villain. I agree with you that part of what made it good was having no clue what was going to happen in that first basement scene.

Great movie. 25 minutes in, it had me hooked. But agree that the ending was a bit over the top. So, going into it with high expections, I was somewhat let down.

I rank it 4th best of the Best Pic nominees, behind 1) OUATIH 2) Jojo Rabbit 3) 1917

It's a dark comedy. I think you missed that.

When I watched it the second time, I laughed a lot more and realized that it wasn't taking itself nearly as seriously as I thought it was in the first viewing.

If you view it as very dark version of a Seinfeld episode, it makes the genius come out even more.

Well, I read that it was a dark comedy before watching it, but you're right. I absolutely missed the funny parts. I guess I needed a laugh track.

Ms Park making Ms Lee cook dinner an exact way, outside normal working expectations. Mr Park making Mr Lee swallow his dignity to play an Indian Chief. Nobody was 100% innocent. Plus the Parks were obviously not supporters of the previous staff, firing them for non-credible reasons. They viewed staff as cogs in their life, not as equal humans.

It's almost like the rich we're "parasiting" off the working class just as much as the working class was "parasiting" off the rich
Anyone want to take a stab at the symbolism in the giant rock?

The rock was a "Suseok"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suseok

Otherwise known as a Scholars Stone. Very symbolic as they promise wealth to whoever possesses them.

I have to agree with the poster above, the rich people we're the victims in this, and the theme was a little hollow for me. I think if I was more familiar with S. Korean culture it could've meant more. But watching this cold and with no spoilers, I took away that a family of con artists hoodwinked a naive family and it all cam crashing down for them, like it should've.

Because I'm an OLD, I've got a question concerning 'dark comedy'. In total, would you consider Breaking Bad (I realize it was a series) a dark comedy of sorts? Looking around to see where Parasite is showing and just want to get the right mindset before I go. I don't know anything about Parasite but loved BB.

The first season or so of Breaking Bad had portions that I would consider "dark comedy". The bathtub collapse during the body disposal for example.

Honestly, I would recommend going into this movie with as little knowledge as possible so you don't have any expectations on what it is.

What if the Dad was a parasite to his son's success and the rock was a "traditional" anchor of his fathers lack of planning in life holding back the son? Near the end he puts the rock in a stream/river to get it clean and erode away the rough edges to become refined like the rich he sees at the party.

Finally he has to create a plan to get his father out of captivity, but the reality is he his stuck in his life and can't buy the house so it ends with "so long"
