It's interesting how two mega-franchises have handled the death of a central character.

Star Wars basically wrote around it, but kept the character important to the story and ultimately gave the character a death while Fast and the Furious just has Brian presumably living the dream somewhere off screen.

This series isn't even related to the first movie except that it has some of the same characters. It went from a pretty decent (but cheesy) street racing movie to international agents/thieves. I was really suspect of the subsequent movies, but I gave them a shot and I really enjoy them for mindless entertainment.

What's really wild though is that the central theme of the franchise hasn't really changed. Your family is who you choose and what you're willing to do for that family defines who you are as a person.

Somehow that throughline has made it from boosting small electronics to some sort of international anti-terrorism strike force.
