I prefer the Gary Jules version of Mad World over the original from Tears for Fears. It gets bonus points for being in Donnie Darko.

Here's a live performance w/ both singers:

also the theme music to the HBO Latina Drama Sr. Avila

To the OP - Hendrix was the guitar god. Never matched before or after.......

Or so one would think. How does any man listen to Hendrix and proclaim "yeah, I think I can do that a little better"? Yes, SRV played Hendrix's songs better than Hendrix. Blows my mind. I love both, but SRV played those songs better.

Hendrix was a guitar god. SRV was called home to teach the gods how to play better because he played a guitar like it owed him money.

I prefer the Jimi version of both Little Wing and Voodoo Child. I also prefer the NIN version of Hurt over Johnny Cash.

I'll also add 311's Love Song over The Cure

As far as little wing goes, I feel they're such different songs I don't even have to have them compete. I love both versions a lot.

Clapton's cover is pretty good, but Jimi's is better.

I'm a huge guitar fan. I love anything from Van Halen to Brad Paisley. Scotty Moore, Chet Atkins, Slash, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and so on.

But those guys all start at #3, and none of them is qualified to Jimi's or Stevie's guitar case.

In my humble opinion.

Robert Earl King Road Goes on Forever over Townes Van Zandt

Did Townes record this song? I know Joe Ely did, but I liked Keene's recording, mainly because I heard it first.

Derp. Yes, you're right. Still like REK's over the original.

Okay, just so we're clear, REK's version IS the original. Joe Ely and the Highwaymen covered it, and Toby Keith ripped it off.

I actually like Joe's version a little better because of the way they ramp up the volume and tempo as the song progresses. The Highwaymen's version is just terrible. It's like they listened to the song once, never practiced it, and recorded it while reading the lyrics off a page. I get embarrassed FOR them every time I hear it. I understand being partial to the original, especially if you heard it first.

One of my favorite artists is John Hiatt, who has been covered a TON. I typically prefer his version of his songs to the cover versions.

His version of Drive South is better than Suzy Bogguss's
His version of Feels Like Rain is better than Aaron Neville's and Buddy Guy's
His version of Have a Little Faith in me tears me up every time I hear it, but I heard Delbert McClinton's version long before I even HEARD of John Hiatt, and that's a strong cover - I like DMC's version better than Jewel's or Joe Cocker's.
Believe it or not, his version of Something Wild lives up to its name way better than Iggy Pop's version (which is surprisingly sedate and straightforward)!
Bonnie Raitt's version of Thing Called Love surpasses his version and was rightfully a big hit for her.
His version of Through Your Hands is far better than Don Henley's, partly because Henley did such a close copy/clone he did nothing at all to make his version his. The biggest "change" was dropping the female duet partner, much to the detriment of the song. Haven't heard David Crosby's version, although I know he did one. I'll have to look it up.
Jimmy Buffett does a good version of Window on the World, but mostly because he borrowed Sonny Landreth to play slide guitar, who played on Hiatt's original. (Landreth is THE God of slide guitar, imo.)

Jimmy's version of JT's "Mexico" is awesome. I love them both.

His version of Steve Goodman's "Banana Republics" is much better than Goodman's.

I'll start it off with who recorded the better version of Voodoo Child?

Jimi Hendrix:

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Removing the fact that it's Jimi's song, just listening to both versions, I prefer SRV's.

Are we listening to the same recordings?
Jimi is better.

It's dreadful. I couldn't imagine having such horrible taste in music to like a piece of trash such as this let alone call it one of the best covers ever. May God have mercy on your soul. And ears.

Yeah we are, and if SRV came before Jimi, their roles in Guitar God history would be reversed. I still think SRV was a better player, especially if you go watch live performances. Can't say some of Jimi's sounds was because it was the 60's and he was high, because much of SRV's time was him being fueled by booze, cocaine, and ***** as well.

If SRV came before Jimi, it's doubtful he sounds the same, considering Jimi was probably his biggest influence with the way he sounds. Part of Jimi's legacy was how inventive he was on the guitar using techniques that future players like SRV would later perfect.

This. Jimi's stuff 50 yrs later still sounds fresh and modern and influences multiple genres of music. SRV is a legendary bluesman. Period. His stuff is beautiful listening but you cant listen to SRV (excluding the bad pop crap *tick tock people* with his brother at the end) and not hear powerful guitar driven 80s cocaine blues rock.
