If SRV came before Jimi, it's doubtful he sounds the same, considering Jimi was probably his biggest influence with the way he sounds. Part of Jimi's legacy was how inventive he was on the guitar using techniques that future players like SRV would later perfect.
If SRV perfected it do you not think he would have done what Jimi did had Hendrix never picked up a guitar?

But let's be honest here, we're arguing whether or not $100,000,000,000 is better than $99,999,999,999.

This. Jimi's stuff 50 yrs later still sounds fresh and modern and influences multiple genres of music. SRV is a legendary bluesman. Period. His stuff is beautiful listening but you cant listen to SRV (excluding the bad pop crap *tick tock people* with his brother at the end) and not hear powerful guitar driven 80s cocaine blues rock.
And when you listen to Hendrix, you hear 60's heroin and free love rock. I mean, drugs may be bad, but damn if it didn't contribute to some awesome music.

Lol, what? One of the best covers ever.

It's dreadful. I couldn't imagine having such horrible taste in music to like a piece of trash such as this let alone call it one of the best covers ever. May God have mercy on your soul. And ears.

Well you went from 0-100 real quick. Pretty unnecessary.

I think that's impossible to determine. You can't say for sure that he ever actually thinks about those techniques. And what was said about SRV above is true. His music sounds like the 80s. If he's playing in 1967, his music is going to sound like it came from 1967. I just don't think you can say that if SRV came first, he would be considered the better guitarist, because if he came first, his guitar playing would be completely different. His inspirations are going to be Muddy Waters, the Stones, Dylan, The Beatles, Elvis and Buddy Holly. If you listen to 60s Clapton and 80s Clapton, there's a big difference.

I think SRV is a guitar legend and one I was fortunate enough to see twice. Texas Flood tour and the Couldn't Stand the Weather tour. But when I listen to SRV I hear his influences,Albert King , Otis Rush, and Jimi.

When I listen to Jimi I hear Jimi. Jimi is one of those performers that the more you listen to the more you appreciate him. Fortunately he has a huge library of work from his brief musical career.

So I prefer Jimi's Voodoo Chile ((Slight Return) because I hear it in the context of his catalogue. But I still think SRV is one of the best.

To me Jimi is #1 and Stevie is a close #2. The fact that there's even a discussion about if SRV plays a Hendrix song better than Jimi shows how incredible he was. But Jimi was groundbreaking. He was doing **** that no one was doing. Guys like Clapton, Townsend, and McCartney were going to see him play club shows at the start of his career and were blown away by what they were seeing. I think it was Townshend who said he contemplated quitting guitar after seeing Hendrix play.

Nobody ever accused dumbass George of being able to write a hit song.

Honestly, Dwight did a great cover of that song. I give the edge to Elvis because we know he was taking some kind of drugs and nailing the backup singers between sessions.

Adam Levine can apparently play a guitar and did a great cover of Purple Rain.

It's become the "that's a neat cover" thread. Dwight Yoakum is a certified bad ass but GTFO with Suspicious Minds and Purple Rain. Arguably Elvis' most Elvis song and Prince's most Prince song.

Coming back around on the Atlantic City debate...I've always preferred The Band's version but this is also another version I think is great. I'm not a huge Springsteen fan to listen to his version.

I can't think of a single cover of Zeppelin that improved on the original. Tool's "No Quarter" is the only one that's even sniffed the original.

just found thread..... lots of interesting stuff i'll offer a few.

^^^ PS I only saw the above post after I posted. ironic. I agree - I hate most LZ covers......

HUGE Zeppelin fan and I'm not one to usually appreciate much in the way of Zep covers but I think Tools cover of No Quarter is jaw dropping good.... and dare I say better than LZ did it.... heresy I know but....damn. I think it's the best cover ever certainly the best LZ cover ever done.

Over 11:00 long....Starts out as a straight cover which is often my least favorite type of cover but serves a good homage here.... the 2nd 1/3rd (about 4 mins in) morphs into a melodic ethereal TOOL sound and is really good but very different than LZs melodic sound.... the final 1/3rd is something else entirely (about 9+ mins in) and really changes the song from what LZ did with it becoming an incredible heavy full throttle crescendo finish.

Here is LZ studio version although Tools version compares more to some of the longer Live LZ versions:

There are a lot of good cover songs of Tom Petty actually.... but oddly to me The Goo Goo Dolls version of American Girl is something I really like. But I would not say better than the original just surprisingly good. I'm pretty sure there are only Live versions i've never seen studio version. the Live version was on GGD greatest hits vol 2 actually.

Gerry Rafferty's 1978 classic Baker Street was done really really well I think by the Foo Fighters with a guitar solo replacing the sax....

lastly....for now... I would never diss the great Johnny Cash he's just about unparalleled to me but the cover of Ring of Fire by Social Distortion is one of my faves..... just how much their punk sound and faster tempo fits with this song is amazing...the vocal by Mike Ness although not trying to sound like Cash is just perfect for the song especially in the chorus.

You reminded of one going the other way. I like Johnny Cash's Rusty Cage better than the original:
