Caption: Photo taken during the first full listen down to "Country Squire" with @timmytychilders after recording wrapped with ol' Yoda sitting back there in the corner. @john_prine was in the studio hanging out the 2nd and final day of recording and came back to hang out during mixing. He absolutely loved this album. Im extremely proud to call both of these men my friends.
Edit: that figure standing behind the door is the ghost of Ferg (David Ferguson)..the best studio mentor and dirty uncle a man could ever hope to have.
Sam Stone might be my favorite song of all time. "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes" is such a hauntingly beautiful line.
Anyway - after hearing about the tribute referenced above I discovered Swamp Dogg's original cover. I hadn't really cared much for other Sam Stone covers before (including Johnny Cash's version, which I was surprisingly disappointed in) but this is an absolutely fantastic take. I've probably listened to it 20 times in the past couple of days.
For John Prine's recordings I've listened to pretty much all of them available and like the Live from Sessions at West 54th performance best. John's voice is still in it's prime, and the upright bass goes with John's guitar work so perfectly on this.
