A couple weeks ago a friend on Facebook brought up playing Dungeons and Dragons. In a moment of idiocy I mentioned that I used to play, and would DM a game for them.

Well, last Thursday 7 (3 with no prior experience) of us sat down to play over google hangouts. I hadn't played since I was a freshman in high school, never Dmed, and had about a week to learn about 5e.

The game was supposed to last 2 hours, but ended up going over 3.5+. Was an amazing time, and reminded me why I loved the game in jr high. One guy actually called me the next morning to tell me how much fun he and his wife had. We have the campaign concluding this Thursday, with another one of the guys setting up a campaign for next Thursday.

That being said, any other games y'all recommend? Call of Cthulhu and Aces and 8's sound pretty good. It might be too soon too say, but this feels like something that may end up being a weekly game.

I have a group that I play x wing with on Wednesday nights. We have been playing some on Vassal and table top simulator. It's not the same, though.

Shadowrun: dystopian cyberpunk future with elves and magic thrown in for good measure where players engage in corporate espionage that may involve blowing things up

Paranoia: dystopian 1984 future where players are helping and/or hindering Big Brother, often by murdering each other, but it's okay because there are plenty of clones around

Deadlands: alternative history Wild West with supernatural and horror elements where players may help the Pinkertons track down supernatural threats or help a Salt Lake City railroad magnate retrieve his wife's soul from the afterlife

Pathfinder: high fantasy that's not Dungeons & Dragons where players may delve into dungeons or slay dragons

Legend of the Five Rings: Asian-themed fantasy where players may engage in court intrigue or protect the kingdom of Rokugan from the demons from the Shadowlands

Vampire: The Masquerade: Modern day where players are vampires who pull strings from the shadows and compete as to who can be the most goth and/or emo

Star Wars Roleplaying Game: you can probably figure this one out without my help

Arkham Horror LCG on Table Top Simulator! It can be run solong or up to 4 people. I play paper for the expansions I own and use TTS for those I dont!

Just imagine how 1/6 would've played out if DC hadn't had such strict gun laws.

Two people starred his post as of the time of this signature. Those 3 people are allowed to vote in the US.

It never is. I typically play MtG.... seems like forever ago. Online versions definitely have their downside.

Does it start with a Princess Leah outfit for the wife?

Yep, played dnd for years with friends, we switched to mtg when we all started having kids cuz game play was quicker. Some now doing the online version but it's just not the same for me.

For D&D specifically Chris Perkins (early acquisitions incorporated and dice, camera, action) and Matt Mercer (critical role) are two DMs are worth checking out. Chris is typically more action oriented in his style while Matt is very much a story teller.

Glass Cannon Network runs a couple of games but focuses on pathfinder. Not a big fan of their DM because he tends to get forget levels (he had a level 1 monster do 56 points of damage on its first attack, and that wasn't a critical) and will push the players into situations that they were trying to avoid.

This is so good

I'm in a game that uses Roll20.net online play. It's not bad, but I don't really know what's on the DM side of things

Pathfinder has a ton of adventures

You'd probably have to venture onto Etsy for your cosplaying purchases.

I used to play Galacta 25 with friends back in high school. This was lots of fun, although obviously a Star Wars / Battlestar Galactica ripoff. I still have all of my painted miniatures somewhere in the house. I'll post some pics later.

My wife and I bought gloomhaven on a recommendation. This was our first RPG table top game that we ever bought. I played D&D in junior high for a little bit, but didn't touch it in high school.

Anyway, we absolutely love Gloomhaven. I spent a couple weeks studying the rules and watchEd YouTube videos to help understand the game. It was like studying for a test. But once we got the game nuances down, we have really enjoyed the game. Good first time experience for us. We are probably half way through the campaign.

Tabletop Simulator on steam has been great during the pandemic for us. We've played a ton of gloomhaven scenarios using this mod: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1301493206

Ideally you would have played Gloomhaven in person some before playing it on TTS, so you don't have to learn both Gloomhaven and TTS at the same time.

Another TTS workshop mod I want to try is Hero Quest, which I have really fond memories of as a kid but haven't played in 15-20 years. Right now our group is on a play through of Clank Legacy though (also on TTS).

If you haven't noticed, I really recommend Tabletop Simulator during this pandemic

Funny to see this thread pop up. We are still playing. We've just moved it to Tuesday nights. I think it might actually go on once this is all over. One of the players runs a podcast and we are taking about starting one up for this.

We finished my campaign in dnd, a buddies campaign in dnd, a campaign in "Space King's" (hella fun), and now I'm running a "Tales from the Loop" mystery. One of the newbies just announced that he wants to run a game, so we will see what he decides.

Looked up this thread just to say that our group is still going. Even added a player.

We've done paranoia and enjoyed it. Seems that we really like dnd and space kings. Tales from the loop wasn't really that much fun.

I played a game of D&D at WarCon while in Junior High circa 1980.

Now I'm not claiming the DM was GRRM, but I do remember he was incredible good.

Missed this last year, but I see you mentioning Call of Cthulhu. That's actually a really fun system. Lovecraft is a lot better known now, but you can still throw the players through something crazy. Focus on the idea that there are many secrets man was not meant to know, that lurk just beyond the edge of reality and sometimes break through into our world. And have the players be ready to lose the characters- death and insanity can come very quickly and unpleasantly.

I think my favorite one-shot adventure is called "The Crack'd and Crooked Manse", which is in a book called Mansions of Madness.

Hands down the best RPG campaign I've ever read or run (in any system) is CoC's Masks of Nyarlathotep. But be prepared- it's a long haul!

ALMOST started D&D-5e with, what has turned out to be, my weekly board game night group, but we ultimately all decided to just play Divinity: Original Sin 2 instead so nobody would have to DM.

We started playing 5e around Christmas: my wife, my 7 year old daughter, and me as DM. We have a second campaign that adds a couple friends. I hadn't played since high school, and never DM'd, but we are having a ton of fun. Our family campaign plays 2-3 nights a week. My daughter is picking it up quickly, and she loves it.

Benny has been doing this on Saturday mornings with part of his theatre group.

They spent a few months doing a Harry Potter based D&D followed by Nightmare Before Christmas.

Now they are doing a Minecraft based one.

Anyone know of a forum based game of D&D? Or what sites are good hosts of that media of gaming?

Years (decades?) back I used to play online through forums (I think it was on Delphi Forums or something like that), and the expectation of just posting once a day really seems to be the right level of commitment I can afford nowadays.

How old is he now?

My friends and I started playing during Boy Scout camping trips when I was about 12. When it's summer in the RGV you find a shady spot and try not to move too much. DnD is great for that!
