Glad to see someone finally put Pantera. Vulgar Display of Power was such a good album.

Great Southern Trendkill was on regular rotation for me.

Not to nitpick, but I remember a lot of these bands from the '80's. Pantera, Black Crowes, Radiohead, Pixies, REM were all '80's bands that I remember from my college days ('83-'88)

Not to nitpick, but Black Crowes and Radiohead debuted in the 90s.

Great thread. I offer this:

Mouthful of cavities is an incredible song. BM is one of my favorite bands of all time. I was at A&M when Shannon died. Some buddies and I almost drove down to Houston when they played Numbers. Ended up being their last show ever as Shannon was found dead on their bus a day or so later.

REM has good lyrics but their actual music is about as boring as it can get.

The Bush album came across while I was mowing the yard the other day. I had forgotten what a great album it is. Took me back to high school (the last time I regularly mowed the yard).

Did they really? I thought sure I remembered them at college. I'm getting old I guess!

Great thread!
Everyone should look into Dave Grohl and how he recorded the entire album by himself that would be the first Foo Fighters album. Incredible talent. Nirvana had just begun recording their final album, two studio days without KC, then one day with him. Cobain wanted to move on to a different project and had grown weary of rock star life with the touring and publicity. Obviously Dave Grohl has other ideas as well. Everyone was on the same page about moving on. Butch Vig has the last recorded Nirvana song in his safe although it has no recorded lyrics.
90's has incredible music start to finish with RHCP to Matchbox 20 to Eminem which made up for the atrocities of the hate band 80's.

not to nitpick, but no one talks (or cares) about 80s pantera... ever.

Cowboys is 90s. Pantera is a 90s band through and through.

One of my favorite concert experiences was watching the lead singer of Collective Soul stand in awe of the crowd singing Shine Down back to him at Rock Fest
The band I was probably least excited about at Rockfest was Collective Soul. But I was wrong; they put on a great show.

yes it is...i could listen to alice in chains all day. not ever seeing them in concert is one of my bigger regrets

i'd also add stone temple pilots to the discussion. core and purple back-to-back was a pretty solid 1-2 punch in the 90's. they were so hit-or-miss at concerts though.

For all the crap STP got from critics, Purple is still my second favorite grunge album behind Ten.

I missed Matchbox 20. I was so mad a year later, ha. Also missed Sugar Ray. Got to see them years later and they were good. Collective Soul was the best that day. That's the gig that sold me on them.

Counting Crows went the other way. Left extremely disappointed in them.

I agree on the Counting Crows set. Was not great. I don't remember anyone else being a disappointment. I do remember getting my first ever contact high though. Got home that night and ate all the left over chinese food in the fridge

I would say, making a list of great 90's albums without Weezer, Green Day, the Toadies or the Offspring would be lacking. 1994, in my head, is up there as one of the greatest years from popular rock music.
I feel like 1994 was the peak for that era. I was 10, so that's also one of my first true memories of experiencing new music.

Weezer
Green Day
The Offspring
Nirvana
Soundgarden
Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Stone Temple Pilots
Bush
Live

Even the "pop" rock of the time was more "rock" compared to today...
Hootie and The Blowfish (I remember when Cracked Rear View came out in 1994)
Better Than Ezra
Gin Blossoms
The Cranberries

90's era rock gets a bad wrap because of the 'gloomy' aura about it. But that's not fair to every 90's band.

But what I loved the most from that period was the raw nature of the music. Guitar, drums, vocals...really simple. Not over-produced. Not a bunch of reverb and synth like the 80's. Not a bunch of vocal effects, drum machines, and heavy delay that rock evolved into post-2000 (and don't even get me started on the rap-rock).

It definitely left an impression with me. And to this day...I prefer music that's guitar-driven and less produced.

They had a tendency to significantly rework songs (especially hits) for concerts. While the effort is commendable, it often left people disappointed.

Daylight Fading while the sun set at TMS was a highlight of their set.

To tie two of the three posts above me together, Paul Leary (from The Butthole Surfers) actually produced the follow-up to Rubberneck, an album titled Feeler. Unfortunately Interscope rejected the album and it wasn't until 2001 we got the next Toadies album (Hell Below / Stars Above).

Interscope still owns the masters to Feeler and won't give them up. I have most all the demos though and it would have been an amazing album. They rerecorded a lot of the songs and put out a version in 2001, but ultimately I still wish that original would have been released. Screw Interscope!!!
