That's funny. I thought to myself during that scene, "He really conveys Lithgow's characteristics and speech paterns really well.". Now I know why.

If you ever watched third rock from the sun, his son also played one of the students, Leon, now and then. He looked and sounded like him then as well.

I didn't need to see mom pimp out the little girl to open, but the courtroom dialog and examination was pure Perry Mason.

Another great episode heading into the finale.

Great episode. The look on the DA's face when he fell into Perry's trap was priceless. Glad to see Pete quit instead of getting killed off to make room for Drake.

I knew Mother Sister was going to pull the ol' buy a baby and switch it with the dead baby trick.

At this point, the audience knows everything, correct? We just don't know how it's all going to unfold in the courtroom. Is this typically the Perry Mason formula? I remember watching the show 35-40 years ago but don't remember details of any episodes.

I think there used to be a twist at the end. I expect one here. For example, I wouldn't be 100% surprised if we find out the Emily was tangentially involved after all.

I think there will be a twist. I think it will show the DA and the judge are involved somehow. That was alluded to in episode 6 in the judges chambers. Not sure how Emily was complicit. I guess that could be a twist though. I hadn't though of that.

I don't really expect many more twists that unveil collaborators. One episode and quite a bit of work to accomplish with Ennis (and his partner), so I think a lot will be focused there.

If there is a wild card, then maybe Judge Headroom is shown to be dirty in some way. But prosecutor Barnes clearly wasn't involved since he's been on the cops' ass to make sure they didn't get him in a jackpot.

So where the hell did that baby in the street come from? Anybody? Clearly Birdy knew it was there, as she knew to turn right rather than left. But where does one get a spare baby from? The baby store?

I assume she arranged for some poor mother to be paid to give up her baby

I assume a they paid a poor church member. Or orphanage.

Not sure how Birdy thinks that's going to work. Obviously Emily will recognize that as not Charlie. Does Birdy expect Emily to play along with somebody else's child?

I think so. She wants to believe so deeply.

If the dead prostitute was not Asian, then I would have assumed that the baby was hers. That would implicate Birdy in the whole thing.

I previously stated that this show was decent but still hadn't bought in 100%, that was until the 2 (6 &7) most recent episodes. Now I'm sucked in completely.

Overall I enjoyed it. Just seems we'd get one mediocre episode then one real good one. Finale was perfect and sets up next season very well.

I thought he might get the acquittal and the bad cop getting killed was a bit of a twist. This was the courtroom Perry Mason I grew up watching.

Great finale, and the series overall was about as good as we could have hoped for, IMO. Nothing amazing, but it didn't need to be, either. Just a solid series all around.

Looking forward to next season.

Good storyline and acting overall. Curious how different it would've been had Downey Jr. been able to keep the Mason role. Rhys did well, though.

I personally think Rhys is a better actor than RDJ. Though clearly not as much of a box office draw so far.

Was hoping this series would live up to the standards of Boardwalk Empire. Was disappointed overall but will see if season 2 is an improvement.

I like it more than boardwalk empire (comparing first seasons) and has potential to be more interesting for longer.

The makeup on Mason during the closing argument was terrible. Looked like stage makeup.

Were they trying to get cute and use 1930's style makeup?

Grew up watching the TV series and loved it. Thought this was very well done. One thing that made be laugh was when the Assistant DA said "no one ever confesses while on the stand". That happened almost every time on the TV show. That's what made it good.

Great series. Looking forward to season 2!

This was really good and am looking forward to next season. Never thought I would say that about anything called 'Perry Mason'. The acting, script and cinematography all scored well in my book.

Lots to love about this series. Rhys, Chalik, and Rylance all were really strong in their rolls. Shea Wigham is rounding into one of the very best characters actors in the game.

I particularly enjoyed the look of the show, and I thought they did a very good job handling the courtoom scenes and the legal stuff. Very well written and believable.

I really liked how they gave us a tongue-in-cheek Perry Mason moment with him training with the deputy DA. That was really, really well done. Then they flip the Perry Mason trope on its head; Mason doesn't even call the killer. He doesn't even win the case. He gets a hung jury, which is about the best he could hope for under the circumstances. Only now we know that if they retry her, he has the officer and the teeth to play. Of course they won't but still a really nice way to give Mason a win even though he didn't have the firepower to go up against all those pieces working in concert against him. Just great writing, IMO.

The "raising the baby" stuff was distracting. I don't really understand the point of it all. Just weird.

The biggest problem I had with the series was the score. I get that it's film noir, and I get that it's a period piece. Enough with the sad trumpet, though. Terrence Blanchard and his muted trumpet playing 3 notes was wearing me out.

Conversely, HBO giving us the rearranged Perry Mason theme over the credits to close out the season was incredibly cool. I never thought I wanted a Perry Mason origin story, but here we are and I really enjoyed it.

Was going to post the same thing this morning and saw you had already mentioned it. First saw him in Boardwalk and he gets better every time he's on screen.

All the performances were great, my mind specifically goes back to Rhys in the car driving to see Jim Hicks, talking like EB, and then absolutely losing it and ranting. Great stuff.

I didn't know how much it would try to emulate True Detective, and the truth is it really didn't as far as structure and story goes. And personally I liked that. Sure there were some neat little twists/discoveries (linking Ennis and the rest to Denver, the Asian addict, etc), but for the most part, you kind of had a solid idea of what was going on and what happened. I know the trend these days is to have subreddits focused on clue hunting and solving the finale of Westworld in the first episode, but I've gotten a little weary of that lately, and enjoyed this approach. I'm sure there was plenty of that type of clue hunting and theorizing for this show, but you don't feel like you're missing out by just letting the story come to you, and I like that.

Great show, looking forward to future seasons. Interesting going to RDJ's IMDb page and seeing how many future projects he's tied to as a producer. Putting that Marvel money to use I suppose.
